The study was conducted at a 415-bed acute care hospital in southwest Ohio. The Scott Triggers tool, used to assess patient risk factors, was integrated into perioperative care to enhance communication and increase preventive measures. Over nine weeks, the tool was applied to 145 patients, identifying 118 as high-risk. Although the reduction in hospital-acquired pressure injuries was not statistically significant because of the small sample size, the project highlighted the tool's potential effectiveness. Key findings included the importance of accurate risk assessment, effective communication, and staff member education. Continuous education and support for staff members are essential to sustain improvements in patient outcomes and ensure high standards of care.</p>","PeriodicalId":54317,"journal":{"name":"Aorn Journal","volume":"121 3","pages":"198-207"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2025-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143517402","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study explored family members' anxiety levels before, during, and after surgery. We used a phenomenological approach and interviewed 15 surgical patients' family members. We identified four themes to illustrate family members' experience of anxiety during the perioperative period: anxiety before surgery impacted the body and mind, anxiety peaked during surgery, anxiety eased and regulated after surgery, and family members coped with their anxiety. Family members identified self-regulation of anxiety as a key strategy for avoiding becoming overwhelmed. Perioperative nurses can use these findings to gain an understanding and awareness of how family members' anxiety ebbs and flows during the perioperative period. They can assess waiting family members' anxiety and provide interventions, such as listening with empathy and providing accurate information and updates, to help mitigate the anxiety.</p>","PeriodicalId":54317,"journal":{"name":"Aorn Journal","volume":"121 3","pages":"e1-e11"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2025-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143517404","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Infections cause significant financial burden and can have lasting negative effects on patients, particularly in cardiac surgery. Despite standard infection prevention measures, a notable increase in postoperative infections was observed in a high-volume cardiac surgery center in 2018. A two-year quality improvement project was conducted to enhance perioperative team member knowledge of antibiotic-resistance trends and implement an antibiotic protocol that included methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus prophylaxis. The project involved education, updates to the electronic medical record, and data collection and analysis. Although results indicated no significant change in SSI rates post intervention (P = .81), this may have been because of an existing low methicillin-resistant S aureus prevalence at the center. The study underscores the importance of continuous evaluation and adaptation of infection prevention protocols to improve patient outcomes.</p>","PeriodicalId":54317,"journal":{"name":"Aorn Journal","volume":"121 3","pages":"208-216"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2025-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143517456","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
