Drawing on historical and ethnographic evidence gathered over 16 months in Johannesburg, South Africa, I examine the role of music in contributing to the Christian identity of conservative evangelicals and in mediating their relationship with religious others. For the interdenominational, multiracial network of conservative Christians with whom I worked, music sung during weekly church services was carefully curated to meet elders’ pastoral aims informed by the conventions of orthodox Christian theology, yet it was also a site of tension and innovation as efforts to appeal to wider demographics were implemented. The palpable contrast between this music style and that of more charismatic evangelical churches was a point of implicit social commentary, semiotically standing in for the spectre of dangerous religious difference. This ethnographic research illustrates the power of embodied, sonic “feeling” to maintain cultural boundaries in South Africa’s heterogeneous religious soundscapes.","PeriodicalId":54118,"journal":{"name":"Anthropology Southern Africa","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139363885","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These open-mike sessions promoting freedom of expression are analysed as carnivalesque moments redistributing the norms of who can be visible and what can be said (and heard) in public. By doing so, they implicitly challenge the hegemonic workings of the ruling party and open political breaches through which new scenes seem possible. Based on three-year fieldwork in Luanda and mobilising immersive film-recording, the article explores the meaning of these interactive performances both at the individual level and in terms of collective momentum towards systemic change. How are we individually touched to the point of becoming a part of something bigger? It also questions the conditions of possibility of ethnographic encounters in a city marked by high levels of surveillance. What does it mean to hold a camera in the middle of people voicing their discontent? How far can the bodily experience of a foreign white woman help unravel the subjectivities of young Angolan men? The article does not respond unequivocally to all these questions but uses them to reflexively engage the multisensory emergence of public space.","PeriodicalId":54118,"journal":{"name":"Anthropology Southern Africa","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139364105","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The anthropologists entered the field sites of Micaúne and Cóbuè via non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and their existing development projects. During the fieldwork, the researchers developed a relationship of proximity with several participants who positioned the anthropologists as agents of change at the same level as NGO officials. We explore the partnership and negotiation between anthropologists and research participants, reflecting on the challenges of collaboration at a critical time when the economic development of Micaúne and Cóbuè was at stake. This enquiry goes beyond the political or ethical dimension of development to focus on the management of expectations for future change.Neste artigo, analisamos criticamente a inserção de antropólogos no campo em dois locais situados no centro e no norte de Moçambique, respectivamente, com foco na negociação e na produção de dados etnográficos em contextos de incerteza. A inserção dos antropólogos nas localidades de Chinde e Cóbuè se deu através de organizações não governamentais (ONGs) e seus projetos de desenvolvimento em implementação. Durante o trabalho de campo, os pesquisadores desenvolveram uma relação de proximidade com vários interlocutores que colocaram os antropólogos na posição de agentes de mudança no mesmo nível que os funcionários das ONGs. Neste trabalho, exploramos a parceria e a negociação entre antropólogos e seus interlocutores na investigação, refletindo sobre os desafios da colaboração num momento crítico, em que estava em risco o desenvolvimento econômico tanto de Chinde como de Cóbuè. In February 2000, when I started fieldwork for my PhD thesis in the central region of Mozambique, the country was living under a climate of political tension in the wake of the December 1999 general elections. Devastating floods also hit, especially the regions where I intended to carry out fieldwork in the districts of Mossurize and Machaze, Manica province, and in the district of Buzi, Sofala province. In this article I demonstrate that a context of political crisis, social disruption and calamity imposes constraints and important challenges on fieldwork with participant observation. Neste artigo, utilizo a experiência pessoal para discutir as formas de fazer etnografia em um contexto de crise. Em fevereiro de 2000, quando comecei o trabalho de campo para a minha tese de doutoramento na região central de Moçambique, o país vivia sob um clima de tensão política na sequência das eleições gerais de dezembro de 1999. Inundações devastadoras também atingiram o país, especialmente as regiões onde eu pretendia realizar trabalho de campo nos distritos de Mossurize e Machaze, província de Manica, e no distrito de Buzi, província de Sofala. Neste artigo, demonstro que um contexto de crise política, turbulência social e calamidade impõe restrições e desafios importantes ao trabalho de campo com observação participante.","PeriodicalId":54118,"journal":{"name":"Anthropology Southern Africa","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135717425","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I entered the field based on previous ethnographic fieldwork in which the encounter between Mozambique’s national languages and its official language, Portuguese, became one of the central issues to understand the reconstruction of national identity. I look at the origin of that reconstruction as legitimated through language(s). Paulo Freire, who contributed to the development of critical pedagogy, was a key actor in the literacy policies that were developed in post-independent Africa. However, in Mozambique, my research brought me to the other side of the (hi)story, to the (un)Freire (hi)story of Bagamoyo. During pandemic times, my ethnography was done at a distance, supported by a network of shared contacts that I developed during my long personal journey of research and experience in Mozambique. As I call it, this interconnected line of ethnographic inquiry, in which I was not physically present although I was “being then,” was developed using the collective work methodology within a participatory approach as advocated in the Bagamoyo school in the 1970s.Desde 2019, tenho estado envolvida em uma etnografia à distância sobre a reconstrução do início das políticas linguísticas e de alfabetização desenvolvidas na Escola da Frelimo em Bagamoyo (1970–1975), Tanzânia. Parti para o terreno tendo como base um trabalho de campo etnográfico anterior, no qual o encontro entre as línguas nacionais de Moçambique e a sua língua oficial, o português, tornou-se uma das questões centrais para compreender a reconstrução da identidade nacional. Vejo a origem dessa reconstrução como legitimada através da(s) língua(s). Paulo Freire, que contribuiu para o desenvolvimento da pedagogia crítica, foi um ator-chave nas políticas de alfabetização propagadas na África pós-independência. Contudo, em Moçambique, minha pesquisa trouxe-me para outro lado da (hi)estória, para a (hi)estória (des)Freiriana de Bagamoyo. Em tempos de pandemia, minha etnografia foi feita à distância, apoiada por uma rede de contatos partilhados que desenvolvi durante meu longo percurso pessoal de pesquisa e vivência em Moçambique. Como denomino, esta linha de investigação etnográfica interconectada, na qual eu não estive fisicamente presente, embora “estivesse lá” [being then], foi elaborada utilizando a metodologia do trabalho coletivo inserida numa abordagem participativa, tal como foi praticado pela escola de Bagamoyo na década de 1970.Keywords: BagamoyolanguageMozambiquenational identityremote ethnography","PeriodicalId":54118,"journal":{"name":"Anthropology Southern Africa","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136329353","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the Mozambican context, however, the pandemic added an additional critical level to previous crises (epidemics, extreme climate events, armed violence) which had led to methodological “innovations” in a field that relies on building relationships of trust. These innovations — such as conducting fieldwork in multiple stages, working collaboratively or using archives — have been conceptualised as “patchwork ethnography.” This article reflects on the impact of this methodological option on making visible agents and knowledges of struggles hitherto silenced, such as the role of ordinary women in the context of the nationalist struggle in Mozambique (1960s–1970s). Through patchwork ethnography, we obtain contextual and dense knowledge that pays attention to the changing circumstances of life and work that are profoundly altering the conditions of knowledge production.A Covid-19 colocou desafios significativos para a investigação antropológica à medida que foram introduzidas quarentenas, restrições de viagem e medidas de distanciamento físico. No contexto moçambicano, contudo, a pandemia acrescentou um nível crítico adicional às crises anteriores (epidemias, eventos climáticos extremos, violência armada), o que levou a “inovações” metodológicas em um campo que depende da construção de relações de confiança. Estas inovações — como a realização de trabalho de campo em múltiplas etapas, o trabalho colaborativo ou a utilização de arquivos — foram conceituadas como “etnografia de retalhos”. Este artigo reflete sobre o impacto desta opção metodológica na visibilização de agentes e saberes de lutas até então silenciados, como o papel das mulheres comuns no contexto da luta nacionalista em Moçambique (décadas de 1960-1970). Através da etnografia de retalhos, obtemos conhecimento denso e contextual que presta atenção às mudanças nas circunstâncias de vida e de trabalho que estão alterando profundamente as condições de produção de conhecimento.Keywords: collaborative researchCovid-19methodological challengesMozambiqueself-reflexivity","PeriodicalId":54118,"journal":{"name":"Anthropology Southern Africa","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136328779","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
