These philosophies differed fundamentally in their understanding of the relationship between subject and object, foregrounding questions about the respective roles of “idea” and “experience” in scientific inquiry. Goethe’s complex mediation of these opposing worldviews seeks a resolution to the dualism between mind and world, which I argue has significant implications for environmental ethics today. I examine Goethe’s anticipation, in his resistance to the division between culture and nature, of key tenets of environmental philosophy, as he searched instead for continuity between the human and non-human world. Goethe’s refusal to distinguish humans from the rest of nature, emphasizing rather their interdependence, points towards the concepts of ontological egalitarianism and ecological self-realization that are fundamental to the deep ecology movement. This places Goethe at the forefront of a genealogy of thinkers who have examined the cultural underpinnings of the environmental crisis and suggests that the “ecological self” had already found a model in Goethe’s thought. The focus is on German literature in translation in the US market. The US market is known to be hostile to translations, exhibiting what is often called the ‘three percent problem.’ Three brief case studies sketch the dynamics of curation which influence transatlantic flows of translation. Beginning with a discussion of the publication history of Do¨rte Hansen’s novel Altes Land, the New York-based German Book Office and the German Book Prize (Deutscher Buchpreis) are considered as gatekeeping institutions. Different types of economies are introduced which play out in transatlantic literary flows: the economies of prestige, scale, favors, and (media) attention. In closing, the contribution emphasizes the potential of book studies approaches for transatlantic literary studies. Precisely through their failure, they highlight these main contours of Tabori’s work. One of the most interesting and theoretically challenging chapters in Open Wounds is by Klaus van den Berg, who interprets Tabori through the lens of Walter Benjamin’s notion of Bildraum. Bildraum literally means image space, but in Benjamin’s theorization, it refers to a mode of cognition born of modernity’s shocks. Van den Berg argues that Benjamin’s concept overlaps with Tabori’s image of himself as a Spielmacher (play maker), a soccer term that suggests he did not so much direct actors as create Spielraum for them—room in which to play. This Spielraum/Bildraum becomes the setting for what van den Berg terms “performance illuminations,” flashes of understanding and revolutionary experience that conjoin “physical, psychological, and historical space” (69). This setting aims to establish “a visual passage between past and present and makes ideas legible on stage” (70). Van den Berg then applies this critical model to Tabori’s two productions of The Merchant of Venice, which he reads as responses to the Holocaust. We learn that, before Munich authorities vetoed the idea, Tabori even wanted his 1978 production of the play to be performed in Dachau in a staging whereby audience members and actors would be bussed together to the camp. These productions demonstrate how Tabori “advanced from modern director in the mimetic theater to a unique playmaker orchestrating the unfolding of memory and experience” (71). Open Wounds has a few of the vices typical of edited scholarly collections, such as repetition of themes and minor inconsistencies. For instance, Tabori’s Kafkainspired 1977 play Hungerkünstler, for which his cast prepared through a medically supervised fast for forty days, is translated in three different ways, as The Fasting Artists, The Hunger Artists, and The Hunger Artist. But these are not worth dwelling on because the book certainly has far more virtues. Foremost among them is its concision and clarity. In just 200 pages, the pieces of this scholarly mosaic construct a vivid picture of George Tabori’s many identities and the theoretical underpinnings of his theater. The introduction and ten essays, all scrupulously footnoted, typically number between 15 and 20 pages. This economy of prose makes them pedagogically useful for Holocaust studies, German studies, and theater courses, where George Tabori might yet receive the credit he is due.","PeriodicalId":54028,"journal":{"name":"Monatshefte","volume":"25 1","pages":"135 - 138"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69653035","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the end, one is left with the sense of a tremendous waste of talent and effort, all to little or no real purpose. The case of Helga M. Novak blurs the lines between victim and perpetrator, since her work for the Stasi happened under duress, was of short duration, and was followed by many years of harassment and vindictiveness on the part of the Stasi. Among other things, the Stasi was clearly a male chauvinist, sexist organization that sometimes behaved in abominable ways to women—for instance by trying to use Novak as a “honey trap” for western men. One comes away from the book feeling a good deal of sympathy with Novak. The case of Maja Wiens is more complicated and problematic, since she clearly harmed some of the people she was spying on and showed little remorse about it before she ultimately turned against the Stasi, and the East German regime itself. The book is well written and quite readable—in fact, it is a bit of a page turner. One wishes that the copy editor had been more careful, as there are occasional typos and lapses. For instance, one important anthology of innovative East German literature that appeared in the mid-1980s, co-edited by Sascha Anderson and Elke Erb, receives different titles: Berührung war eine Randerscheinung (163) and Berührung ist eine Randerscheinung (181). In fact the correct title is Berührung ist nur eine Randerscheinung: Neue Literatur aus der DDR. Occasionally one wishes that the author would take a step back from her case studies and ask larger questions about the role of literature in East Germany and its relationship to the Stasi or about the effectiveness of secret organizations in modern societies more generally. But that is not really what the book is about—it is primarily about the case studies, and these are eminently worth reading.","PeriodicalId":54028,"journal":{"name":"Monatshefte","volume":"115 1","pages":"321 - 323"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69653701","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While Thompson argues mutual familiarity with each other’s texts, the reader is occasionally left wondering how sustained (and mutual) such exchange was between Black Power thought and Critical Theory. Davis, in this context, takes on an exceptional role, since Adorno served as her advisor and she maintained a strong relationship with Marcuse. Driven—or even provoked—by Adorno, Davis goes beyond the Frankfurt School itself to take on Hegel’s teleological view of dialectics and history. She also grapples with Arendt, using “Hegel to condemn Arendt’s reading of Greek political thought on freedom and slavery” (136). It is in this final chapter that Thompson’s own voice becomes more apparent, arguing against readings that Davis downplayed theory for activism. Thompson corrects such claims, instead showing how her activism is borne out of this reversal of Hegel’s dialectics. With Phenomenal Blackness, Thompson condenses what seems like a scattered discourse into a coherent narrative about Critical Theory’s impact on Black Power thought. The chapter outlining Davis’s more sustained interaction with Critical Theory is the most intriguing, but the book as a whole points out that her engagement was also preceded by others. One overarching theme that Thompson could explore more is the extent to which Critical Theory might have, in turn, been influenced by or responded to Black Power theory. But Phenomenal Blackness will be of interest to scholars and historians of African American studies as a discipline, social theorists in general, and of course, scholars of Critical Theory, Black Power intellectual history, and the Frankfurt School. Thompson has shed light on a rich intellectual exchange that has hitherto been overlooked, and readers will surely be curious to see future work on the topic.","PeriodicalId":54028,"journal":{"name":"Monatshefte","volume":"115 1","pages":"133 - 135"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69653025","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
