In order to prove, however, that the resultative construction is a clausal structure with an autonomy of its own in Spanish and that it deserves being studied as such, this paper analyses five of its distinguishing syntactic, semantic and pragmatic traits, with no resemblance in English: (i) the global meaning of the construction; (ii) the semantic classes of verbs most recurrent in it; (iii) the preference that the resultative attribute shows both for the prepositional form and for its anteposition to its logical subject; and, finally, (iv) its tendency to be modified by adverbial intensifiers.","PeriodicalId":53723,"journal":{"name":"Philologica Canariensia","volume":"22 1","pages":"55-87"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2016-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67540093","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Casos afines en las obras de Leopoldo Alas y de Benito Perez Galdos permiten analizar los modos en que la intelectualidad de la epoca rechazo la logica de la revancha y propuso nuevos modelos de reaccion ante la eventual trasgresion del adulterio. Sin embargo, el ejemplo especifico del ataque que la critica clariniana hace de Calderon durante los homenajes de 1881 deja al descubierto ciertas contradicciones del campo liberal con respecto a la herencia cultural del canon aureo. PALABRAS CLAVE: Galdos, Clarin, honor, Calderon, critica “Actors are quick to kill”: Leopoldo Alas and his critical reaction against Calderon’s morals In the context of the late nineteenth century, several liberal writers denounced, both through literature and in their critical writings, the archaic character of Calderon’s morals regarding revenge for dishonor. Similar examples in the works of Leopoldo Alas and Benito Perez Galdos allow us to analyze the ways in which the intelligentsia of their time rejected the logic of revenge and proposed new models of reaction to the possible transgression of adultery. However, Clarin’s critical articles against Calderon in 1881, the 200th anniversary of his death, reveal certain contradictions in the liberal side about the cultural heritage of the Golden Age canon. Since lexical reciprocal verbs express reciprocity intrinsically, they should not require the use of an emphatic reciprocal expression to denote reciprocal meaning. Some scholars even claim that some emphatic reciprocal expressions, such as mutuamente, are incompatible. The aim of this paper is to describe to what extent symmetric verbs can be used with four of these expressions using an empirical approach. The results obtained shed light to the questions raised: we have been able to verify that these expressions are more frequent with non-reciprocal verbs and we have proved that the combination of symmetric verbs with all these expressions is possible, even in the case of mutuamente.","PeriodicalId":53723,"journal":{"name":"Philologica Canariensia","volume":"22 1","pages":"117-136"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2016-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67540144","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main goal is to check, through a thorough statistical scrutiny, whether these adverbs are author-related or not. The data, a total of 3476 instances to be sampled, are drawn from an overall corpus of 32 novels published between 2001 and 2014. The results yielded by such analysis not only show that the presence of these adverbs is somewhat determined by the author but also that the variables are interrelated across different contexts. Thus, what the ensuing lines come to prove is that the use of such adverbs of possibility is a marker of the writer’s idiosyncratic style.","PeriodicalId":53723,"journal":{"name":"Philologica Canariensia","volume":"21 1","pages":"109-132"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2015-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67540169","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
