Indeed, many authors suppose that any comprehensive normative theory of the good life needs to include an account of the meaningful life, understood as one of its particular value dimensions. Usually, this syntagma is understood in terms of referring to a certain valuable aspect of a 42 Einleitung: Das Schöne, Wahre und Gute given life or one of its temporal parts, labelled as praiseworthy, significant, or admirable. Controversy abounds, however, when it comes to questions such as whether the meaningful life constitutes an independent value category within the good life, or, if so, how this category relates to the other, more established categories of the good life like human well-being. The articles collected in this special issue attempt to contribute to the controversies on the understanding of the multi-layered dimension of the meaningful life and try to shed further light on it.","PeriodicalId":53352,"journal":{"name":"Zeitschrift fur Praktische Philosophie","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47699480","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In diesem Beitrag wird untersucht, ob Auserungen wie „Ich ware lieber nicht geboren“ sinnvoll sind und ob sie sich begrunden lassen. Im einleitenden Teil wird gezeigt, dass diese Auserungen entgegen einer von manchen Philosophen vertretenen Ansicht nicht sprachwidrig sind. Im zweiten Teil wird David Benatars „Asymmetrieargument“ in modifizierter Form verteidigt. Benatar bringt dieses Argument zur Verteidigung der These vor, dass es stets einen Schaden darstellt, in die Existenz zu gelangen. Es wird gezeigt, wie sich das Argument unter Beachtung der Differenz zwischen „jemanden eines Gutes berauben“ und „jemandem ein Gut vorenthalten“ verteidigen lasst. Im dritten Teil werden die praktischen Implikationen des modifizierten Asymmetrieargumentes ausbuchstabiert. Es fuhrt nicht zu einem Anti-Natalismus, wohl aber zur These, dass es rational ist, die eigene Existenz zu bedauern.","PeriodicalId":53352,"journal":{"name":"Zeitschrift fur Praktische Philosophie","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47433108","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ethische Aspekte der Altersdemenz in der Perspektive des Lebensverlaufs","authors":"Mark Schweda, Karin Jongsma","doi":"10.22613/ZFPP/5.1.8","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.22613/ZFPP/5.1.8","url":null,"abstract":"Our understanding of dementia is shaped by cultural tropes. Such tropes may be helpful in making sense of an otherwise elusive and ultimately inscrutable state. In contemporary discourses on dementia, two tropes play a prominent role: the ‘return to childhood’ and the ‘living death’. This article subjects both cultural tropes to critical reflection. It first explains the cultural-historical origin and meaning of the ‘second childhood’ and ‘living death’ metaphors. It then explores their implications for our understanding of dementia and our attitudes and behaviors towards those affected. In doing so, it employs a life-course approach that draws attention to the normative significance of the temporal dimension and structural whole of a human life. In this way, it turns out that both metaphors essentially compare dementia with a different stage in human life and thus regard the condition as a deviation from biographical norms. The article then draws conclusions for ethical debates about self-determination, substitute decision-making and advance directives of people with dementia. Moreover, on a theoretical-conceptual level, it highlights the significance of a biographical and cultural-sensitive perspective for ethical theorizing.","PeriodicalId":53352,"journal":{"name":"Zeitschrift fur Praktische Philosophie","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47207192","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
