Hence, there is a need to investigate how Indonesian occupational therapists render services for individuals with ASD. The objectives of this study were to describe Indonesian occupational therapy practice and identify the challenges in rendering services for individuals with ASD. This cross-sectional study employed an online survey with structured and open-ended questions to collect data from Indonesian occupational therapists who work with persons with ASD. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were used to analyse data. Survey was completed with an 88% response rate. Sensory Integration and Short Sensory Profile are the most common frame of reference and standardised assessment, respectively. Challenges identified were: translating theory into practice, being creative and skilful, improving competence for effective collaboration, supporting parental involvement, and overcoming stigma. This study clarified the nature of current Indonesian occupational therapy practice for individuals with ASD and the challenges faced by Indonesian OTs in rendering services for persons with ASD.","PeriodicalId":53208,"journal":{"name":"World Federation of Occupational Therapists Bulletin","volume":"77 1","pages":"93 - 101"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2021-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14473828.2021.1938863","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45271338","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Initially, the World Federation of Occupational Therapists’ position, which adheres to a certain perspective of ‘Inclusion’, applied to schooling processes is challenged. We aim to foster theoretical development about the concept of ‘Inclusion’ in education, in dialogue with occupational therapy and its proposals for this area. The defence of a democratic school by occupational therapists is advocated considering its limitations and possibilities in a society founded on inequality. The question remains as to which new concepts will underpin our practices or whether we can/should assume the task of rewriting/reframing them in search of what motivates us: concern to ensure, in daily professional practice, the access, permanence and, mainly, participation of those who are outside school.","PeriodicalId":53208,"journal":{"name":"World Federation of Occupational Therapists Bulletin","volume":"77 1","pages":"107 - 113"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2021-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14473828.2021.1921929","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46165067","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The revised 2019 Position Statement marks the next milestone towards becoming a socially and ethically responsive profession; playing a vital role to advance human rights, justice, and social inclusion globally. To inform progress towards embracing a human rights perspective, this paper documents that history and unpacks the reasoning behind the revisions. We start with a brief history of the 13-year journey from 2006 to 2019, marked by extensive discussion, consultation, and scholarship on occupational justice, social inclusion, and human rights. We end with notes on opportunities and challenges for occupational therapists in any situation, from clinical practice to policy leadership, to speak out, write, and otherwise take a strong stand on occupational therapy and human rights, occupational justice and social inclusion.","PeriodicalId":53208,"journal":{"name":"World Federation of Occupational Therapists Bulletin","volume":"78 1","pages":"83 - 89"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2021-04-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14473828.2021.1915608","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45692512","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Practicing preventatively, was an opportunity posed by the COVID pandemic, we saw an opportunity to realise our professional potential here and preventative practice as a professional strength. Organisations supporting these individuals have had to respond in different ways. This paper reports on an Australian pilot programme undertaken from July to September 2020 in response to physical distancing limitations imposed during the pandemic. The aim of the programme was to explore the benefits and effectiveness of delivering a comprehensive biopsychosocial group programme using virtual technology to people living with Parkinson’s. The 10-week group programme of education and wellness was delivered to five participants by a multi-disciplinary allied health team under the coordination of an occupational therapist. Evaluation of this programme suggests that virtual group sessions could be a viable and effective means of delivering a biopsychosocial occupational therapy-driven programme to improve the quality of life of people living with Parkinson’s.","PeriodicalId":53208,"journal":{"name":"World Federation of Occupational Therapists Bulletin","volume":"78 1","pages":"53 - 58"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2021-02-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14473828.2021.1887631","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47301383","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The online survey was circulated in five languages through member organisations and other WFOT communications networks. The 30-item survey collected primarily quantitative data, although some comments and recommendations were requested. A total of 2750 individual responses were received from 100 countries. Findings indicated that the Covid-19 pandemic had a wide-ranging impact on occupational therapy as a result of several factors, including a lack of preparedness, restrictions in service access, new demands during redeployment, frequently changing work conditions, use of new technology and limitations in resources such as additional space for physical distancing and personal protective equipment. Working during the pandemic also had a personal impact on the health of most respondents, with some reporting reduced morale and concerns for their safety. Access to Covid-19 specific training and living in a high-income country were found to have a significant positive impact on a number of outcomes, including the respondent's sense of competence, effectiveness and safety. Those working in a clinical role were less likely to report higher levels of safety, effectiveness and positive impacts associated with the pandemic. Important recommendations emerged from the findings to inform the future work of WFOT and other professional organisations, including the need for: collaborative efforts to provide information and training resources; development of standards and supports to promote quality service provision; and advocacy to promote access to occupational therapy and address occupational injustice.","PeriodicalId":53208,"journal":{"name":"World Federation of Occupational Therapists Bulletin","volume":"77 1","pages":"69 - 76"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2021-01-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14473828.2020.1855044","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49483513","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the interplay of facilitators and constraints to participating in occupations is not well-known, especially in developing countries like the Philippines. The aim of this paper is to provide an understanding of how facilitators and constraints towards participation in occupation impact the mental health of an individual with spinal cord injury within the context of coping with bereavement. This study employed a single-case participatory action research method with narrative analysis. The result revealed how environmental inaccessibility and attitudes induced negative experiences of coping with bereavement, mitigable by supportive contexts. In conclusion, mental health and participating in occupations are hindered and supported by the contexts. Practitioners should diminish constraints and maximise facilitators to enhance participation in occupations and mental health.","PeriodicalId":53208,"journal":{"name":"World Federation of Occupational Therapists Bulletin","volume":"77 1","pages":"58 - 64"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2021-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14473828.2020.1868164","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45763953","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The global COVID-19 pandemic saw our lives change beyond recognition both personally and professionally. And as we entered 2021 not much seemed to have changed, with many of us still experiencing restrictions on daily occupations plus increasing numbers of COVID-19 cases in many countries adding further pressures to already strained health systems. However, it is vital to acknowledge that the pandemic has brought opportunities as well as challenges and, as a profession, we have responded and adapted. The WFOT Global Survey (Hoel et al., 2021) documents this well and makes recommendations for future initiatives. Professional organisations and many national occupational therapy associations developed and shared resources regarding good practice; and, in this edition of the WFOT Bulletin, we see how services around the world have evolved and embraced new ways of working to ensure occupational therapy services meet clients’ and societal needs. Before the pandemic, there was awareness of an obvious gap in rehabilitation services around the world. Ten years ago, the World Report on Disability (World Health Organization and World Bank, 2011) showed that 2.4 billion people world-wide were in need of rehabilitation services. Since then, WHO has repeatedly highlighted access to rehabilitation services as essential in embracing universal health coverage and achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030. Whilst COVID-19 has again highlighted the need for access to rehabilitation (Gutenbrunner et al., 2020) it is important that any rehabilitation strategy addresses both COVID-specific rehabilitation needs plus the needs of those who require rehabilitation for reasons other than coping with and recuperating from the COVID virus (De Biase et al., 2020). Recognition of the indirect effects of the pandemic on peoples’ health and well-being is also growing. For many, national and local ‘lockdowns’ have led to occupational marginalisation, whilst for some the change in daily routines and the move to more digital communications can be viewed more positively through the alleviation of some of the physical and emotional barriers faced pre-pandemic. Either way, as the world transitions to the next stage of the pandemic and the roll out of the vaccination allows for more social (re)integration, occupational therapy’s focus on engagement and participation is well placed to help address the physical and psychological barriers to overcoming the effects of occupational deprivation. As we continue to adapt our practices and develop new services, it is critical that we use effective measures to capture and demonstrate the unique contribution of occupational therapy. The WFOT’s Quality Evaluation Strategy Tool (QUEST) can assist with understanding and using Quality Indicators to monitor, eva","PeriodicalId":53208,"journal":{"name":"World Federation of Occupational Therapists Bulletin","volume":"77 1","pages":"3 - 4"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2021-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14473828.2021.1901184","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44626227","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
