These inequities, coupled with high levels of poverty, have resulted in heavy reliance on natural resources for survival and livelihoods making these rural communities highly vulnerable to climate change. The present and evolving impact of climate change on rural occupations and the need for occupational therapists (OTs) to be aware of this dynamic is crucial in building resilience and allowing for adaptation to ensure sustainability for these communities. Inclusion of environmental sustainability in occupational therapy (OT) practice is explored through a reflection on the work of a conservation non-governmental organisation in rural South Africa. The authors recommend that South African OTs take up the challenges presented by climate change as outlined in the WFOT Position Paper and Guidelines on Sustainability.","PeriodicalId":53208,"journal":{"name":"World Federation of Occupational Therapists Bulletin","volume":"76 1","pages":"25 - 31"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14473828.2020.1734307","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41506304","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I call this awareness and its implications for occupational therapists ‘environmentally-informed occupational therapy’ (EIOT). EIOT is an approach to occupational therapy founded in the growing body of scientific evidence that demonstrates that what is good for the environment is good for human health and well-being. It looks to nature to inform interventions and helps occupational therapists support their clients, students and communities to make lifestyle choices that contribute to their personal health while protecting and ideally enhancing the environment, e.g. while reducing global warming, preserving natural resources, preventing biodiversity loss, and more. Clinical and educational examples of EIOT are described.","PeriodicalId":53208,"journal":{"name":"World Federation of Occupational Therapists Bulletin","volume":"76 1","pages":"32 - 39"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14473828.2020.1717055","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41854312","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In 2012, the World Federation of Occupational Therapists released a position statement on sustainability and sustainable practice, urging occupational therapists to address the global environmental sustainability crisis in practice. However, there is a lack of research exploring sustainability within occupational therapy practice in Canada. Purpose. This study examined perspectives of Canadian occupational therapists on addressing social, environmental, and economic sustainability in personal and professional lives. Method. This mixed-methods, exploratory study recruited 81 Canadian occupational therapists through professional associations to complete an online survey. Responses were analysed using descriptive statistics and directed content analysis and guided by the Transtheoretical Model of Change. Findings. Canadian occupational therapists are in the preparation stage of change. Although sustainability issues and barriers toward sustainable practice are recognised, there is a discrepancy between personal values and professional actions. Implications. Further exploration is needed into realistic targets of change and feasible methods of incorporating sustainability into occupational therapy practice.","PeriodicalId":53208,"journal":{"name":"World Federation of Occupational Therapists Bulletin","volume":"76 1","pages":"50 - 59"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14473828.2020.1761091","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45309355","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As such, the purpose of this article is to demonstrate how occupational therapists can transfer evidence-based skills from similar areas of practice to promote environmentally conscious habits and develop a social support network to maintain these skills. In this case illustration, we will use Ray’s story to demonstrate how occupational therapy intervention can be used to modify occupational behaviour for a positive impact on the environment.","PeriodicalId":53208,"journal":{"name":"World Federation of Occupational Therapists Bulletin","volume":"76 1","pages":"4 - 6"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14473828.2020.1717056","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43632953","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nonetheless, their implementation affects life circumstances and opportunities of communities living within and nearby their borders. Aim: To layout situational maps of PAs in four Brazilian biomes to understand wicked problems of living nearby or inside PAs and discuss how occupational therapy can promote sustainable occupational opportunities. Methods: We used case study and Situational Analysis to deal with data from 20 PAs, 82 interviews and four months of observations. Results: PAs have a negative effect on people’s life by limiting job and income options, promoting unequal access and use of PA for different economic groups, among others. However, some positive aspects of PAs include the development of sustainable income practices, access to information, leisure and tourism to urban populations, and fostering social organisation of traditional communities. We, finally argue that occupational therapists can engage in this debate and practice with occupational-based projects guided by critical education and collective action perspective.","PeriodicalId":53208,"journal":{"name":"World Federation of Occupational Therapists Bulletin","volume":"76 1","pages":"40 - 49"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14473828.2020.1758398","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47067759","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The situation led Filipino occupational therapists (OTs) to adapt to the consequences of this global pandemic to continue performing their personal and professional roles. While virtual-based and alternative modalities for client care were suggested, OTs are still experiencing challenges in implementing them. In response, an online forum with 30 minutes of online discussion was conducted by a group of OTs to share their voices about their personal and professional dispositions, strategies employed to continue practice, and implications of COVID-19 to the profession’s practice. Data were collected and analysed. This case study described some key themes that emerged from the online discussion using a questionnaire. Findings revealed feelings of isolation and exclusion among therapists and clients, increased awareness of alternative options to continue servicing clients, and the emancipation of ideas and reflections to guide sustainable actions in occupational therapy education, practice, and policy at present and for the future.","PeriodicalId":53208,"journal":{"name":"World Federation of Occupational Therapists Bulletin","volume":"76 1","pages":"60 - 64"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14473828.2020.1761575","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46153571","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This has been recognised by researchers and professional associations, but there is still a scarcity of research explicitly mentioning sustainability. Relevant contributions may be identified by relating education and research to the Agenda 2030 sustainable development goals. The aim of this article was to describe explicit and implicit inclusion of sustainable development and Agenda 2030 goals in occupational therapy education and research at one Swedish university. Current course syllabi and study guides, as well as research over the past five-year period, were examined and related to sustainability. The results showed that although only a few courses and articles were explicitly related to sustainable development, more course and research content became relevant when this content was compared with the sustainable development goals. It can be concluded that sustainability was more extensively addressed than first visible, but further studies including more universities are warranted.","PeriodicalId":53208,"journal":{"name":"World Federation of Occupational Therapists Bulletin","volume":"76 1","pages":"14 - 7"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14473828.2020.1718266","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48470442","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It led to changes in people's daily routines, affecting their occupational performance and making them vulnerable. At the time, the non-governmental organisation, Doctors of the World, implemented the first humanitarian mission in Portugal – The Hope Mission. This mission, which was made up of a nurse, a community mediator, two occupational therapists, four occupational therapy students and a clinical educator, intervened with the population of the entire affected region. Their main objective was to meet the needs of the people; involving them in significant activities, re-organising their roles and routines, re-structuring their daily lives, increasing their quality of life and their wellbeing and avoiding social isolation. Home visits, group activities and projects were implemented in partnership with community institutions. One of the projects was the (Re)Start Project. An initial assessment was made by the occupational therapists in order to plan the intervention. The project consisted of home visits (where an evaluation of the home context was made), group sessions (cognitive stimulation, motion sessions and group dynamics) and individual sessions (focusing on the performance issue and difficulties experienced by each person undertaking their daily routines). To understand the degree of satisfaction of the participants, specifically in relation to the (Re)Start project, a questionnaire was given to all who participated for more than one month. From analysis of the questionnaires, the conclusion was drawn that participants were satisfied with the activities developed in the project and found them meaningful. The presence of occupational therapy in this scenario was found to be important and made a difference. It would be useful to repeat this type of intervention at a national level, if a further humanitarian crisis occurs, especially in areas with ageing population or which are geographically isolated.","PeriodicalId":53208,"journal":{"name":"World Federation of Occupational Therapists Bulletin","volume":"77 1","pages":"114 - 120"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2019-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14473828.2019.1647958","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47675140","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
