Methods: following the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) the articles were selected according to the inclusion criteria described as follow: 1) articles published in English language; 2) Clinical follow-up studies, retrospective, prospective and randomized controlled clinical trials. Case reports were also considered as well as Letters to the Editor containing expert opinion. Results: seventy-seven articles were initially selected using the key words. After applying the inclusion criteria, 16 articles were selected based on the complete reading. A protocol is proposed based on the literature review and also based in the clinical expertise of the team of dentists working in the Psychiatric Institute of a Tertiary Hospital. Conclusion: trained dentists contribute to the safety of psychiatric patients’ who undergo to ECT procedure by performing an intra oral evaluation prior ECT where they can evaluate and decide the best mouthguard type for each patient and also identify and address emergencies that could represent a problem during the procedure. In some cases, the dental clinician evaluation is also requested after ECT and as well as, in follow ups during and after the psychiatric treatment","PeriodicalId":53157,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Odontologia","volume":"78 1","pages":"1-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41643014","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Material and Methods: the method consisted in analyzing samples of three swallowing trials: voluntary and single swallow of saliva (dry), voluntary and single swallow of 10 ml of water, and voluntary and single swallow of 20ml of water. Statistical analysis: Through Friedman’s ANOVA test we observed a significant variation in the medium potential of the right suprahyoid muscle (p=0.010) when compared to the left suprahyoid muscle (p=0.05). Other correlations were verified by using the Nemenyi test, the Wilcoxon test and the Spearman coefficient to support the different analyses of the results. Results: the analysis found a direct relation between the electrical activity of the masseter and suprahyoid muscles when swallowing 20 ml water as regards the highest potential values, irrespective of face side – left or right; i.e., when swallowing 20ml water, the higher the potential of one muscle group, the higher the expected value of its antagonist. Conclusion: the electromyographic behavior of the masseter and suprahyoid muscles during voluntary swallowing of saliva and two standardized liquid volumes showed that the electrical activity of the masseter muscles did not vary according to the type of swallowing.","PeriodicalId":53157,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Odontologia","volume":"78 1","pages":"1-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41585581","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Material and Methods: a cross-sectional study was conducted, using an on-line Google Form containing 17 objective questions. Last year undergraduate dental students from Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area and close campi answered the survey, coming to a total of 237 answers, with 95% confiability. This research was approved by the number 4.105.142 CEP-HUFF/UFRJ technical report. Results: only 26,6% of the students claimed to have received orientation on how to conduct a case of violence against women. Moreover, 67,1% don’t feel ready to guide victims of domestic violence, claiming to have none/phew/insufficient knowledge of the topic. Most of the students, 92,4%, said that they didn’t receive any information about the notification and grievances file and, 76,7% of those that did, said that they wouldn’t be able to fill it. Over 71% know a woman who has been a victim of domestic violence, who were mostly hit on head/neck/face. The undergraduate students reported that they would provide dental care, orientate the victim and report the domestic violence scenario to the responsible entities. Conclusion: thus, it was observed a knowledge deficit concerning violence against women protocols in undergraduate dentistry courses in Rio de Janeiro, since this topic isn’t approached or is taught using inefficient methods","PeriodicalId":53157,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Odontologia","volume":" ","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47002575","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Material and Methods: This is a double-blind cross-sectional study conducted with 40 volunteers. Pulpal anesthetic parameters such as latency, duration, and success rates were evaluated using a pulp tester device, which emits electrical discharges ranging from 0 to 80 ?A in 20 seconds. Soft tissue anesthesia (vestibular \u0000gum) was evaluated by pressing a wooden toothpick into the gingival region used in the approach. Finally, parameters related to pain after anesthesia were evaluated. Results: We found no statistically significant differences between anesthetic solutions for pulp and soft tissue regarding latency period. The anesthetic solution containing 1:100,000 epinephrine presented a significantly longer effect duration than 1:200,000 epinephrine regarding pulpal anesthesia of maxillary central incisors, first maxillary premolar, and second maxillary premolar. As for vestibular gum, we found no statistically significant differences between the solutions. Regarding pain at injection, the two anesthetic solutions showed no statistically significant differences. Material and Methods: a Literature search of various electronic databases (Medline, SCOPUS, Web of Science) using appropriate keywords (e.g., periodontal disease, periodontitis, squamous cell carcinoma, oral cancer, transformation, carcinogenesis, mouth neoplasms, and carcinoma) was performed. Then, a comprehensive literature review of the current understanding of this link was elaborated. Results: the experimental data suggest that PD induces initiation, promotion, and oral squamous cell carcinoma progression. Periodontal disease models here revised demonstrate a direct relation to carcinogenesis and propose several possible molecular mechanisms of action, such as via activation of Toll-like receptors (TLRs), activation of transcription 3 activator (STAT3) and Notch1 pathways and increased interleukin-6 (IL-6), TNF-?, TGF-?1, cyclin D1, metalloproteinase matrix-9 (MMP-9) and heparinase production as well as regulating the host immune response and induce epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Conclusion: the use of in vivo and in vitro studies is very significant for understanding the casual association of these biological processes.
