In the curricular approach detailed here, preservice teachers developed social imagination by reading not only the words on the page but also the world around them, attending to the ways in which other readers make meaning within their reading community. In this way, classroom communities and intellectual partnerships become central to the teaching of reading and literature in English classrooms and serve as starting points for envisioning new ways of being in schools. The authors describe one particular classroom lesson in depth and discuss the connection between reading pedagogy in English and the imagination of more democratic and equitable classroom spaces.","PeriodicalId":53044,"journal":{"name":"Getsempena English Education Journal","volume":"3 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79580715","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research aims to describe the politeness principle in students' language from the perspective of Madura culture in an Islamic boarding school environment. This research uses qualitative and descriptive research methods to present data directly obtained through recording. The subjects of the study were students and lecturers of the Al Karimiyyah Islamic Boarding School Sumenep. The data were collected by transcribing the conversation between students, teachers, and principals. The results of this study indicate that some sacred words contradict the principle of politeness in the cultural perspective of the Madurai community, especially at the level of the use of Madurai, including Engghih-Bunten, Enggih-enten, and Enjek-Iye. The politeness of the students’ language use in the Islamic Boarding School is influenced by the social background, circumstances, and the combination of boarding school and Madura cultures.","PeriodicalId":53044,"journal":{"name":"Getsempena English Education Journal","volume":"11 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81740659","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This movie tells the story of Anna Fox, the main character with agoraphobia. The researchers are interested to find out the types of illocutionary act in the utterances of a person suffering from an anxiety disorder. Qualitative research and content analysis are used as the methodology. The data are collected from the movie and analyzed through some steps. The theory of Searle (1976) is applied to analyze the data. The findings reveal that four types of illocutionary act:18 assertives, 6 directives, 1 commisives, and 5 expressives utterances are used by the main character in attempting to investigate a murder. The purposes of the illocutionary act are to conclude, to state as assertive utterances, to ask, to request, to order, to command, to beg as directives utterances, to make a duty to herself as commisives utterances, and to apologize, to dislike, to thank as expressive utterances. The dominant utterance used was assertives which carries the value of true or false. It indicates that the main character was trying hard to convince the police officer of what she said was true. Interestingly, only 1 commissive utterance was used to prove what she saw was true. It explains the condition of the main character with agoraphobia.","PeriodicalId":53044,"journal":{"name":"Getsempena English Education Journal","volume":"137 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75491490","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Drawing on our (re)active praxis as teacher educators, we examine our work with two preservice ELA teachers who planned and taught a critical literacy curriculum at a community-based site. The question What trends in YAL research and pedagogy do the books published in this span of time reflect? guided this inquiry to support English teacher educators in their engagement with YAL scholarship within and beyond teacher preparation. After examining 191 books, with the majority of them focusing on research and theory in YAL, findings emerged in five areas: critical events in society, shifts in public education, literacy movements, publishing trends, and scholarly community influence.","PeriodicalId":53044,"journal":{"name":"Getsempena English Education Journal","volume":"29 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78870505","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I focus on texts that educators working in professional roles, ranging from literacy coaches to elementary and secondary ELA teachers to administrators, notice in their daily experiences. Drawing on a curricular assignment in a writing pedagogy course, I consider how educators relate the texts they find interesting to their own understanding of equity-oriented writing instruction. I examine for how teachers consider the texts of their lives and how such attentiveness might help them build humanizing, equity-oriented curriculum with and for students. I also seek to disrupt the overwhelming emphasis on writing as what is needed to pass a standardized assessment. This alignment toward enjoyment may support English educators as they, in turn, support and view students and their languages and literacies as worthy and brilliant.","PeriodicalId":53044,"journal":{"name":"Getsempena English Education Journal","volume":"4 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89379408","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through this theory, the researcher can carry out critical reflections to dismantle the interests of the analyzer. This study describes how moral identity and gender identity are in short stories on republika online media. The approach used is qualitative to understand phenomena about what the subject of the study experiences for example behavior, perception, motivation, action. The data collection technique is carried out by downloading short stories through the Republika e-paper, then describing, analyzing, and interpreting based on critical discourse analysis techniques.  The findings of this study are: there are issues of moral and gender identity that are represented by examining the linguistic level and practice of discourse. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the study of moral and gender identity can dismantle ideologies and aspects hidden in short story texts by looking at linguistic elements through modalities and metaphors; in the practical dimension of discourse shows that short stories contain elements of moral identity and gender identity in line with the vision and mission of the Republika online media that uphold human and cultural values; Factors that influence the development of moral identity and gender include internal factors, namely factors that exist within the character himself, and external factors, namely factors that exist outside the character (environment, lifestyle, friendships).","PeriodicalId":53044,"journal":{"name":"Getsempena English Education Journal","volume":"79 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91281313","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
