In recent years, the Dolomites have become an even much more attractive destination for visitors. Many of them do not know how to behave appropriately in this sensitive environment. The Covid19 pandemic has further accelerated these phenomena. With the project \"Respect the mountain\" (DE: Achtsam am Berg; IT Rispetta la montagna), an awareness-raising process is being implemented since 2021 in South Tyrol, addressing visitors, locals, and tourism professionals in the area of the Dolomites WHS. It aims to raise awareness of environmentally friendly behavior, with focus on water saving and waste reduction. The project is a cooperation between the Department of Nature, Landscape and Spatial Development of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano-South Tyrol - Coordination Office Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage, IDM South Tyrol and the Agency for Environment and Climate Protection of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano-South Tyrol. Tourism associations oversee the implementation.","PeriodicalId":52938,"journal":{"name":"Restauro Archeologico","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43478674","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Ayutthaya City Plan comprises a network of several rivers and canals, connecting the inner city with the outside. The historical monuments are taken care of by both domestic and international agencies, but their settings and built environments face numerous challenges causing the connection between historic monuments and water features is slowly fading away. This study aims to establish why the historical city has lost its sense of a water-based settlement. The result reveals that several areas outside the World Heritage Site remain connected. In times of flood, the traditional design of the historical structure, with its precise leveling and topographical surveys of the past, is able to prevent damage, bearing witness to how the community lives with water intrusion. Several settlements along the ancient Chao Phraya River also represent outstanding examples of the living practices in water-based settlements.","PeriodicalId":52938,"journal":{"name":"Restauro Archeologico","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42189987","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

What has evolved is not only its concept, which progressively included increasingly diversified tangible and intangible assets, broadening its extension and enhancing its richness, but also the processes aimed at their safe-guarding. Within this scenario, a key role is played by Competence Centres for their strategic function capable of responding to the European Union approach with reference to the pact system enucleated by the 1972 UNESCO Convention for heritage protection. Focusing on the first phases of the 4CH Project (Grant Agreement 101004468), this paper aims to outline the ongoing experience in setting up a Competence Centre for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage, strongly centred on the promotion and enhancement of innovative technologies for heritage safeguarding.","PeriodicalId":52938,"journal":{"name":"Restauro Archeologico","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46778932","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The advantages and criticalities of these processes have been investigated for some decades. On the contrary, what and how the UNESCO aegis acts regarding concrete interventions on cultural heritage are less studied. There is no specific reference in the Convention, and the methods and the interventions are under the responsibility of the individual countries. However, understanding “what restoration” is essential for the survival of heritage authenticity and for the inclusion and maintenance of the inscription in the List. Without claiming to be exhaustive, the paper wants to try to outline some initial considerations on the “UNESCO effect” in the practice of conservation of built heritage. Through the analysis of the conservation state of some sites in Emerging Countries (Armenia, Egypt, Georgia, Vietnam) after the realization of works, the contribution reflects on the implications of a “World Heritage site”.","PeriodicalId":52938,"journal":{"name":"Restauro Archeologico","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42313076","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The new paradigms of culture heritage imply an act of acknowledgement based on the recognition of heritage as a proactive and creative sector that is relevant in promoting health and in contributing to societal wellbeing. However, these developments mostly remain in the form of policy recommendations, and there is still a very urgent international need for concrete scientific evidences to support this potential. A growing body of scientific studies has in fact evidenced the contribution of heritage to the promotion of good health and the prevention of a range of mental and physical health conditions.","PeriodicalId":52938,"journal":{"name":"Restauro Archeologico","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42607102","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Twenty years later, the international organization, with the revision of the operational guidelines of the Convention, will expand the previous categories of assets to be protected, so as to include, the new typology of 'cultural landscapes'. In this category the 'Amalfi Coast' has been registered in the UNESCO World Heritage List (WHL) since 1997, due to both its relevant natural and anthropic characteristics. Nevertheless, this contribution analyzes the considerable transformations of the area, mainly from the second half of the twentieth century to today, identifying possible integrated conservation strategies for the future.","PeriodicalId":52938,"journal":{"name":"Restauro Archeologico","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46058578","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Conservazione e Ricostruzione: la difficile ricerca di equilibrio nella salvaguardia del Patrimonio Mondiale 保护和重建:在保护世界遗产方面寻求平衡的困难

The reasons for the phenomenon are rather easy to explain: as the National Restoration Charters and, in general, the theoretical principles developed in the peninsula have well demonstrated, conservation can only be practiced when the authentic matter of architecture is present, as any reference to restoration will appear arbitrary and unfounded without this. Nevertheless, as the international scenario has expanded and the concept of heritage has taken on a variety of geo-graphical meanings, reconstruction has become increasingly popular. On the one hand, this has been linked to the different conceptions of authenticity that are prevalent especially in non-European contexts, and on the other hand, concerns the need to meet the needs of the population, especially following calamities such as wars and natural disasters. It is intended here to stimulate the development of a specific reflection on the phenomenon of reconstruction by analysing the scenarios related to the phenomenon, so as to respond to UNESCO's increasing need to make decisions on reconstruction on the base of useful theoretical support.","PeriodicalId":52938,"journal":{"name":"Restauro Archeologico","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48099462","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The evaluation of the latter has been decisive in the inclusion/exclusion of some historical buildings in the UNESCO World Heritage. In particular, in the Dossier of candidacy of the so-called \"Arab-Norman itinerary of Palermo\" some monuments were excluded due to the restorations conducted between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. But many other \"Arab-Norman\" monuments in Palermo were also restored, as the Churches of Santa Maria dell’Ammiraglio, called Martorana and San Cataldo, included instead in the itinerary. Moreover, there are many monuments that, despite having undergone substantial restorations in style – think of the Alhambra palace in Granada or the fortified city of Carcassonne just to give examples – are part of the UNESCO heritage. This makes us reflect on the interpretation of the concept of authenticity and also how and why the outcome of historical restorations in style are sometimes considered compromising and other times accepted as an integral part of the monument itself.","PeriodicalId":52938,"journal":{"name":"Restauro Archeologico","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47660343","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
