As stated by the WHO, overweight and obesity are increasing health problems of childhood. In Poland, obesity affects 2–12,3% of children, depending on their age and gender. Well-child care is an important element of the control of abnormal values of children’s body mass. Objectives. The aim of this study was an evaluation of the prevalence of abnormal body mass in the group of children aged 6 and a retrospective analysis of the occurrence of abnormal values of body mass in the same group of children when they were 4 years old. Material and methods. The analysis included a study of well-child care cards of 69 children who were under medical care in a GP practice. There were 34 girls and 35 boys in the studied population. The body mass index (BMI) was calculated for each child. The results were compared to the WHO growth charts and the charts of the OLAF and OLA projects. Results. According to the WHO growth charts, in the analyzed group, body mass deficiency was found in 2.9% of children aged 4, overweight was observed in 8.7% of those children and 5.8% of them suffered from the obesity. Body mass deficiency was observed in 2.9% of children at the age of 6, overweight in 14.5% and obesity in 13%. BMI values below the 5th centile were observed more frequently when OLAF and OLA growth charts were used. Conclusions. The abnormal body mass occurred more frequently among girls. Along with the age of the child, the prevalence of excess body mass was increasing. The excess body mass was diagnosed more often when WHO growth charts were used. The abnormal body mass was related not only to weight deficiency, but also to excess body mass.","PeriodicalId":52931,"journal":{"name":"Pielegniarstwo i Zdrowie Publiczne","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46570351","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its essential role is to regulate human circadian rhythm. Endogenous tryptophan is converted into melatonin. The transformation consists of 4 stages during which the serotonin is produced. The concentration of melatonin depends on age and lighting conditions – blue light suppresses a production of the hormone. In children and the elderly melatonin level never reaches maximum concentration while in adults it is reached between midnight and 3 am. Melatonin is mainly catabolised in a liver and eliminated with urine and faeces. It is also oxidized by free radicals. Bioavailability is about 15% if taken orally. With age, the production of endogenous melatonin decreases, mainly due to the progressive calcification of the pineal gland. Similar disorder is observed in the shift workers. The circadian rhythms disruptions can lead to diabetes mellitus, obesity, and neoplastic diseases. One of the reasons of that is disturbed synthesis and secretion of melatonin, which is a subject of scientific studies.","PeriodicalId":52931,"journal":{"name":"Pielegniarstwo i Zdrowie Publiczne","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49399621","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Google Trends (GT) is a free and publicly available service that permits analyses of searches performed with the Google web search engine. With GT it is possible to specify how often certain keywords are searched for. Objectives. The purpose of the study was to determine the feasibility of using data on the frequency of searches with the Google search engine to predict influenza incidence. Material and methods. Using the GT service, data on the frequency of searches for the Polish equivalents of “flu”, “cold” and “fever” in the period of 2014–2016 in Poland were retrieved. Simultaneously, the epidemiological reports prepared by the National Institute of Public Health – National Institute of Hygiene (NIPH-NIH) were obtained for influenza incidence in the same period. Correlations between the variables were assessed using Spearman's rank-order correlation. Results. A statistically significant correlation was confirmed between the average daily search coefficients (ADSC) for all 3 keywords and weekly influenza incidence according to the NIPH-NIH data. The strongest correlation was found for the ADSC of the word “cold” (r = 0.77; p < 0.05). Conclusions. The frequency of searches implemented with the Google search engine may be used for predicting the incidence of influenza in the Polish population.","PeriodicalId":52931,"journal":{"name":"Pielegniarstwo i Zdrowie Publiczne","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44020554","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The elderly are a group diversified with regard to age, health and wealth, which considerably contributes to the social and economical life of the society. In the opinion of young people, positive aspects of old age are often overlooked or weakly emphasized. Perception of the elderly is conditioned by cultural and social premises. Elderly people are very rarely positively presented: as active and well-educated, creative, competent and fit. It is advisable to change such notion of elderly people. Objectives. To identify the image of old age and the authority of the elderly in the opinion of young people, taking into account sociodemographic factors. Material and methods. The study covered 360 students studying in Sanok. The method used was a diagnostic survey and a questionnaire. In the statistical analysis – V Cramer, φ and χ2 tests were used, assuming the significance level p < 0.05. Results. Positive associations with old age in the opinion of the respondents are life experience, worldly wisdom and care for the family. Most of the youth stated that the authority of the elderly in society is average. Associations of old age and the authority of older people in society were differentiated by the sex of the respondents and by the type of school they attended.
