With the increasing availability and reduced pricing, both smartphone usage and its dependence are bound to increase. Nomophobia though reported commonly in the young, the behavior seems to span across age which warrants further exploration. This study aimed to determine the relationship between the smartphone use and nomophobia disorder among adults. Methodology: Adults above 18 years responded to our online survey by snowballing method. Information collected included sociodemographic data, smartphone use details, and severity of nomophobia assessed by a 20-item NoMophobia Questionnaires (NMP-Q). Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS software version 20. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used. Results: A total of 661 participants (female = 309) responded to our survey. Among them 51.1% were in 18–29 years age group. Majority were employed (61.7%) and married (50.4%), coming from an urban background (81.1%), owned a 4G mobile (82.5%), consuming >4 GB per month (58.6%). About 42% of them used smartphones for more than 4 h on activities not related to their jobs. They used smartphones frequently to search information, text and talk to family members. Mostly used when bored, alone or waiting for someone. The median NMP-Q score was 77 (±22.5) and 49.3% of our respondents had scored above the median cutoff score. Nomophobia was positively correlated with duration of phone use per day and inversely with age. Duration of smartphone use predicted nomophobia (80.34 + 4.91; P < 0.001). Conclusion: Nomophobia prevails across age group with increased severity in the young. Intervention need to be planned to decrease the duration of use per day as it emerged as a significant predictor of nomophobia.","PeriodicalId":52916,"journal":{"name":"Annals of Indian Psychiatry","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41455657","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the pandemic affected the whole world, many intellectuals described these experiences as stressful as during wartime. Human suffering and uncertainty about recovery or falling victim had been quite similar in both situations. Logotherapy developed by Dr. Viktor Frankl during World War II (WW-II) has the underpinning to search for meaning in such experiences that motivate the person to remain socially connected and look for better prospects in future. The therapy has the bases in the cognitive psychology, spirituality, and philosophy which are quite different from the modern-day practice of psychodynamic and cognitive therapies. The authors reviewed Viktor Frankl’s book “Man’s search of meaning” in the context of COVID-19 pandemic, and found marked similarities between the human suffering of the current situation and what Frankl has described in his book. In this narrative review, the authors have attempted to compare the situation during WW-II and current pandemic and have commented about the usefulness of practice of logotherapy in the current situation.","PeriodicalId":52916,"journal":{"name":"Annals of Indian Psychiatry","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134980712","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study aims to assess the prevalence and severity of depression and anxiety in couples diagnosed with infertility and to determine the relationship, if any, between the severity of depression and anxiety with sociodemographic variables, duration, and treatment of infertility. Setting and Design: This is a descriptive observational study that was carried out in the outpatient department setting of a tertiary care hospital from January “2020 to December” 2020. Aims and Objectives: The study aims at assessing the prevalence and severity of depression and anxiety in couples diagnosed with infertility and determining the relationship, if any, between the severity of depressive and anxiety symptoms and the treatment received for infertility. Materials and Methods: Fifty couples (100 subjects) diagnosed with infertility fulfilling inclusion and exclusion criteria were assessed using specially designed pro forma and relevant scales for assessment. Detailed history regarding symptoms of infertility was taken, and patients were interviewed based on the International Statistical Classification of Diseases-10 criteria for depression and anxiety. Hamilton Depression Rating Scale and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale questionnaires were used to measure the severity of depressive and anxiety symptoms. Statistical Analysis: The collected data were coded and entered in a Microsoft Excel sheet. The data were analyzed using Statistical Packages for the Social Science version 21.0 software. The results are presented in a tabular and graphical format. For quantitative data, mean and standard deviation (SD), etc., were calculated. Qualitative data were represented in the form of frequency and percentage. The association between qualitative variables was assessed by Fisher’s exact test. Quantitative data were represented using mean ± SD. Analysis of quantitative data between the two groups was done using an unpaired t -test if the data passed the “Normality test” and by Mann–Whitney test if the data failed the “Normality test.” P < 0.05 was taken as the level of significance. Results: A statistically significant was found between depression among wives and the support received from their respective spouses and a significant correlation was observed between the duration of infertility with the presence of depression and anxiety among couples ( P < 0.01). A significant correlation was also observed between the duration of treatment of infertility with the presence of depression and anxiety among couples ( P < 0.01). Among them, substance use is one of the most challenging for the youth in a developing country like India. Aims: The present study aimed to (1) compare among adolescents, young adults, and middle-aged adults comprehensive coping strategies and substance use, and (2) study various coping strategies as predictors of substance use amid the pandemic. Methodology: The sample comprised 1027 participants between 13–60 years of age, further categorized as adolescents (13–18 years), young adults (19–39 years), and middle-aged adults (39–60 years). The assessment was done on the Perceived Stress Scale, Brief COPE Inventory by Carver, and DSM-5 Level 1 Cross-Cutting Symptom Measure. The groups were compared using Kruskal–Wallis and Chi-square. Correlations were calculated using Person’s coefficient, and multiple linear regressions were analyzed. Results: The young adults used more substance use; adolescents used more self-blaming, self-distraction, instrumental support, and positive reframing. The male participants resorted to “substance use” while females were more involved with “seeking social support” and “religion.” Perceived stress, coping, age, and gender formed a significant predictor model with substance use, denial, positive reframing, and significant independent predictors of problematic substance use. Conclusions: Our study found significant age and gender-related differences in using various coping strategies and substance use. Our study explained substance use through the lens of coping where perceived stress, substance use as coping, denial, and positive reframing were significant independent predictors. Results will help to plan interventions to promote adaptive coping strategies and implement focused interventions in the vulnerable groups.","PeriodicalId":52916,"journal":{"name":"Annals of Indian Psychiatry","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134980353","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Knowledge and attitude toward substances of abuse among users are of vital importance for their prevention and treatment, especially in adolescents, as it is the age when the majority of drug users start the use of various substances. Methods: One hundred patients of opioid dependence admitted to a psychiatry ward were assessed using a semi-structured pro forma, which assessed the knowledge, reasons for initiating, and attitude toward substances on a Likert scale. The age of the first intake of substances, frequency of drug use, and physical and psychological changes after intake of substances were also evaluated. Results: Joy-seeking (91%), lack of knowledge about complications/hazards of drugs (89%), friends offer/peer pressure (87%) followed by low self-confidence (86%), and to eliminate shyness (85%) were found as major reasons for initiating the opioid use. Social factors such as family disputes (23%) and parents’ divorce (20%) were considered the least unlikely excuse for substance abuse. Young respondents (ages of 20–29 years) reported a decrease in shyness and improved self-esteem as reasons for intake. Conclusions: Different regions and different age groups seem to have different factors as psychosocial etiologies of substance abuse. Policymakers and other agencies need to look into this before making strategies for controlling this menace.","PeriodicalId":52916,"journal":{"name":"Annals of Indian Psychiatry","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134980706","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aims: The importance of this study would be to bring into limelight the attitude of residents who will be practicing as soon as their residency finishes. Since postgraduate residents are the ones stepping into the field of medical practice, their attitude toward mental health is of extreme importance. Settings and Design: This was a cross-sectional study done at a tertiary care hospital. Materials and Methods: The sample consisted of 1st- and 3rd-year postgraduates belonging to nonpsychiatric branches (50 each), selected by random sampling. Statistical Analysis Used: A comparison of quantitative variables between the study groups was done using Student's t-test. For comparing categorical data, Chi-square test was performed and exact test was used. Results: The scoring of the Medical Condition Regard Scale, which showed the overall regard and attitude, improved as the year of residency changed with more patient exposure the attitude of the residents toward psychiatric illnesses and patients suffering from psychiatric illnesses improved. Conclusions: In the current study, we found that the PG residents have multiple lacunae in their knowledge about psychiatric patients, psychiatric illness, psychiatric treatment, psychiatrists, and subject of psychiatry. Through exposure in-depth and high-quality teaching and internship along with the emphasis on consultation-liaison will decrease the negative attitude and improve knowledge.","PeriodicalId":52916,"journal":{"name":"Annals of Indian Psychiatry","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45828372","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
