This disease influences the physical and mental condition. People who suffer from chronic lumbar pain are more likely to have stress urinary incontinence. The aim of this study was to assess the incidence of involuntary urine leakage among group of patients with lumbar spine disc disease. An additional purpose was to find risk factors of UI in this group. Material and methods: The study was conducted in the spine surgery department in one of orthopedic hospitals. The study group consisted of adults diagnosed with lumbar spine discopathy with sciatica. The control group included healthy participants. There were 50 subjects in each group. Results: Based on statistical analysis, there is no significant difference between the study and the control group in the occurrence of urinary incontinence problem. Subjects with UI had a higher level of disability. Almost 74% people of the study group and 66% of the control group have never heard about the most popular form of urinary incontinence treatment, which is a pelvic floor muscles training. Conclusions: 1. The main risk factors for urinary incontinence in the study group were the nature of the work performed and the sex. Hard physical work significantly increases the risk of UI. 2. {"title":"Comparative effects of two exercise training programs on health-related quality of life in middle-aged women with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease","authors":"Ahmad Mahdi Ahmad, H. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the effects of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) compared to moderate-intensity combined resistance and aerobic training (RT/AT) on HRQoL in NAFLD patients. Material and methods: Twenty-three middle-aged obese women with NAFLD were enrolled in 3-month exercise interventions of either HIIT (n1 = 12, 46.3 ± 5 years, 40.5 ± 4.1 kg/m 2) or moderate-intensity combined RT/AT (n2 = 11, 45.6 ± 4.4 years, 43.5 ± 5.4 kg/m2). Secondary hepatic steatosis, liver cirrhosis, or virus C hepatitis were excluded. HIIT was prescribed as 4 sets x 4 min at 80–85% HRmax with 3 min active recovery. Combined RT/AT was prescribed as 10 min low to moderate cycling exercises followed by 8 resistance exercises at 50–75% 1-RM. The outcomes were HRQoL, as assessed by the Chronic Liver Disease Questionnaire (CLDQ), and the percentage of body weight change (% ∆BW). Results: CLDQ domains were significantly improved in both HIIT & RT/AT groups compared to baselines; the emotional function & worry domains and the total CLDQ score were significantly higher in the HIIT group (p < 0.05) compared to the other group. Body weight was reduced by 13% & 8% in HIIT and combined RT/AT groups, respectively, with a significant difference in the % ∆BW between the two groups in favor of HIIT. These changes affect postural stability. This study sought to compare balance and fall risk indexes taking into account the age of the participants. Material and methods: The study included female members (n = 59) of the University of the Third Age (U3A) set up at the University of Physical Education in Warsaw. The participants were divided into five age groups: 1 (60–64 years), 2 (65–69), 3 (70–74), 4 (75–79) and 5 (>80). Biodex Balance System was applied in the study. The overall stability index (OSI), the anteroposterior stability index (APSI), the mediolateral stability index (MLSI) and the fall risk test were used in the analysis. The participants performed tests that involved standing on both feet with eyes open and closed on a stable surface as well as standing with eyes open on an unstable surface. ANOVA was used to assess balance with regard to age. U Mann-Whitney test was employed to compare groups in terms of balance and the fall risk (p < 0.05). Results: The oldest group demonstrated the worst balance performance with eyes open: OSI – 0.70 ± 0.47; APSI – 0.49 ± 0.30; MLSI – 0.37 ± 0.43. The best values of balance performance were manifested by the subjects aged 65–69: OSI – 0.36 ± 0.13; APSI – 0.25 ± 0.08; MLSI – 0.18 ± 0.11. Compared to eyes-open conditions, the tests performed with eyes closed revealed the smallest differences between the groups in OSI. The lowest fall risk was noted in groups 1 and 2. The highest fall risk index was found in group 4. Conclusions: The findings of the study show that older adults depend on their vision when keeping balance. Physical activity exerts a positive influence on their balance and reduces the risk of falling. Sarcopenic obesity (SO) consists of symptoms such as increased body fat mass and a reduction in muscle strength and/or mass. Material and methods: The review covered treatment methods and diagnostic criteria used in SO patients. Moreover, the impact of SO on the health of older people was reviewed. Papers from the Science Direct and PubMed databases were analysed. The following keywords were used: “sarcopenic obesity”, “diagnostic”, “treatment”, “elderly”, and “physical therapy”. The inclusion criteria encompassed research studies on SO in older people. To be precise, the review included papers from January 2015 to March 2020, and the review itself was carried out from March to April 2020. Results: Out of over 1,200 SO articles, 18 met all inclusion and exclusion criteria. All of the chosen papers were divided into two main groups. The first group contained papers about SO’s impact on the health of older people. The second comprised works about SO treatment methods. The most commonly used SO diagnostic indicators were: BMI (25kg/m2–30kg/m2), BF% (27%–42%), SMI (x < 24%–27%; SMI 0.789), and ALST (x < 15.02 kg). SO was also assessed via the use of algorithms. Conclusions: Sarcopenic obesity is a common syndrome related to body composition in older people. Currently, SO patients can be effectively treated with aerobic and resistance training, whole-body electromyostimulations (WB-EMS), supplements, and psychological interventions. The aim of this study was to determine the functional state and injuries among young athletes practicing cross-country skiing. Material and methods: A total of 65 individuals participated in the study. The test group consisted of 33 individuals practicing cross-country skiing, while the control group consisted of 32 persons not involved in this sport. The study was divided into two stages. The first stage consisted of a survey in which participants completed a personal questionnaire and were asked to answer 17 questions. Next, the Funtional Movement Screen (FMS) test was carried out in both groups using a specialty devised assessment form. Results: The assessment of the risk of injury in both groups was similar, no statistically significant differences were found in this respect (p = 0.992). No statistically relevant relation was between the number of injuries sustained and the training experience of individuals in the test group (p = 0.056). There was no statistically significant relationship between the number of sustained injuries and the training experience of individuals included in the test group (p = 0.056), although this relationship was close to the threshold of statistical significance. Conclusions: Cross-country skiing training had no significant effect on musculoskeletal injuries. The FMS test result did not correlate with previously sustained injuries. Materials and methods: The study included 90 participants between the ages of 18-30 who attend Bahçeşehir University. Their average age was 24.5 ± 2.4. The participants were divided into three groups: the transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) group (n = 30), the control group (n = 30), and the friction group (n = 30). A different intervention was applied to each group three times a week for four weeks. The TENS group received conventional TENS application and relaxation exercises. The control group performed exercises for respiration, posture, and range of motion. The friction group received masseter muscle friction massage and performed a relaxation exercise program which included exercises for the mandibular joint. All of the evaluation parameters were repeated at the end of the twelfth session for each group. Results: After treatment, scores of the visual analogue scale (VAS), Neck Pain and Disability Inventory, Beck’s Depression Inventory, and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory were found to be significantly lower (p < 0.05) for the treatment groups and control group. When the three groups were compared among themselves, there was no significant difference found between them (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Once again, we found the importance of exercise and described the anatomical relationship between the cervical region and the temporomandibular region. This is because the areas used for training are velodromes and highways. The nature of these injuries is closely related to the recovery rate, absence from training, and even the end of a career. This study aimed to determine the characteristics of sports injuries sustained by para-cycling athletes when joining the Indonesia National team. Material and methods: The sample was a group of 19 athletes (16 males and three females) with a mean age of 30 ± 5.02. A questionnaire consisting of 25 questions was used to obtain data, which was adapted from Nowak’s questionnaire. Data analysis was represented in the form of numbers and percentages, and Fisher’s exact test was used to determine the relationship between variables. Results: The results showed injuries are most common in the lower limbs (57%) by falling (73%). The effects of the athletes’ falls are bruises (42%), twists or sprains (17%), and fractures (17%). Conclusions: Para-cycling athletes experience the lower extremity injuries. It can affect up to 4% of the human population. There is not one specific CTS’s reason. Predisposing factors include: injuries and overloading of the wrists, frequently repetitions of the same activities, pregnancy and acromegaly. The ENG and USG are gold standards in the diagnosis of CTS. CTS treatment includes surgical and physiotherapeutic conservative treatment. Physiotherapists uses manual therapy techniques, neuromobilization, fascial manipulation, osteopathy and other kinds of physical therapy. Material and methods: A systematic review of the literature was based on publications from the last 5 years. Articles concerned the physiotherapy of people with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Publications from the PubMed and ScienceDirect scientific databases have been analyzed. The inclusion and exclusion criteria were introduced and based on an analysis of the titles and abstracts related to carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Results: Out of over 28,000 CTS articles, 8 were selected to meet all inclusion and exclusion criteria. The publications concerned physiotherapeutic treatment in the conservative treatment of CTS. The analyzed publications examined the effectiveness of wrist manual therapy, median nerve mobilization, kinesiotaping, soft tissue therapy and fascial manipulations as well as other physiotherapy treatments. Conclusions: The reviewed publications show that physiotherapeutic procedures bring significant benefits and improve CTS symptoms within the hand. The development of physiotherapy and research on rehabilitation in the carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) allow for more effective conservative treatment.
