The decision to build a Buddhist temple “turnkey” to replace the one destroyed in the 1930s, in his home town leads to spiritual transformation. Buddhist teachers, who have unconditional authority, change the outlook and behaviour of the benefactor. The author examines the infrastructure and itinerary reflecting the political geography of the modern Buddhist world and the goals of the informant’s numerous travels. Special attention is paid to the experience of the “miraculous”, which emphasizes the confessional character of these regular travels and is one of the markers of faith. The interview material highlights a close connection between the confessional Buddhist affiliation and the ethnic identification of the Kalmyks, which was not so obvious a few decades ago. The language of spontaneous narrative shows the complexity of the respondent’s worldview, which combines Soviet and non-Soviet values.","PeriodicalId":52194,"journal":{"name":"Antropologicheskij Forum","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45283269","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Tabarruk (which most often consists of sweets and rose petals) change their status: a pilgrim buys them in a shop near the tomb, brings them to the grave, puts them on the tombstone. pilgrims exchange sweets among themselves. the employees of the tomb give part of the tabarruk back to the pilgrims. food from the langar kitchen is distributed free of charge to pilgrims, guests and the homeless and has a comparatively lower status—participants do not have to finish the entire meal. in contrast, sweets given by other pilgrims must be eaten. As the analysis of field material shows, tabarruk has two fundamental properties. first, these items must pass the stage of a gift between real or symbolic participants of the gift exchange; they thus unite the pilgrims with the revered saint and among themselves. second, they must come into contact with the symbolic agent, part of the distributed personality of the saint, and are his indexical expression.
