Moreover, managers unique characteristics have also been analyzed to see their influence of firm performance. However, there has been inconclusive results, and this has been commonly studied in developed countries. Based on the literature review, an innovative theoretical model was established to determine the influence of age, level of education and negotiation skills of the manager on the performance of small and medium-sized companies in Peru. Managers’ negotiation abilities have been reported to be as a relevant factor for the success of a company in Peru. This study followed the post-positivist paradigm and quantitative approach. The population consisted of SMEs from different sectors in Lima-Peru. A probability sample group was chosen involving the managers from 215 SMEs. A five-point Likert scale questionnaire was designed based on the literature review which was piloted and validated by five experts. For data collection, participants were reached by telephone to respond the study survey. The data analysis was conducted using the descriptive reporting and the PLS-SEM structural equation modeling in order to test the significance and causal relationships from the tested variables. The results indicated that only manager’s negotiation skills positively influence SMEs performance in Peru.","PeriodicalId":52115,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Small Business Strategy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135994560","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It also examines the impact of social commerce adoption on women’s empowerment and innovation. To achieve these aims, an online questionnaire was used to gather data from women who use social media platforms to produce and/or sell goods, services, and information to make a profit. Smart PLS, version 3, was used to estimate the research model and test hypotheses. The results confirmed that women’s hedonic motivations, utilitarian motivations, self-efficacy, and social support significantly impact social commerce adoption among women. The findings also reveal that social commerce business has a significant role in women’s empowerment and innovation during crises. This study provides novel contributions to the literature on social commerce, women’s empowerment, and women’s innovation in a crisis setting. Furthermore, it enhances the knowledge of policymakers and women business sponsoring organizations, and other organizations support women about the role of social commerce in women’s empowerment and innovation.","PeriodicalId":52115,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Small Business Strategy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136033408","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper used both quantitative and qualitative methods. An online questionnaire survey was used to collect quantitative data from 380 Saudi MSMEs. The direct effects of the exogenous variables on the endogenous variable were determined using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). Furthermore, multigroup analysis was used to examine the moderating effect of policy response on other variables. Interviews were conducted from a qualitative standpoint, and the information was converted into texts and qualitatively analyzed. Demand Shocks, Management/Operational Shocks, and Supply Shocks all have a significant impact on financial performance. The only significant predictor of non-financial performance was demand side shocks. Management/operational side shocks, on the other hand, have no effect on the non-financial performance of MSMEs. Furthermore, policy response was found to be a powerful predictor of both financial and non-financial performance. During the COVID-19 outbreak, MSMEs’ policies and assistance programs had no discernible impact on demand and supply side shocks, as well as financial and non-financial performance. Overall, the findings of this study will help the Saudi government and other policymakers determine the best way to deal with current and future COVID-19 pandemics.","PeriodicalId":52115,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Small Business Strategy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136033823","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study adopted a quantitative study design through a survey questionnaire and utilized Structural Equation Model-Partial Least Square (SEM-PLS) variance-based approach to test the formulated hypotheses of 506 samples. Results reveal that: (1) Marketing communication capability, channel management capability, and product development capability significantly and positively influence marketing performance, customer performance, and adaptability performance of SMEs, but not financial performance; (2) Marketing implementation capability positively and significantly influences the financial performance, marketing performance, and customer performance, but not adaptability performance of SMEs; (3) Selling capability and marketing planning capability have a significant, positive effect on all the competitive performance—financial performance , marketing performance, customer performance, and adaptability performance of SMEs. The implication is that, with their limited resources and budget constraint, SMEs can be selective in developing their marketing capabilities based on particular performance goals they set to achieve in a given time. The value of the study lies in its all-encompassing comprehensive assessment of the marketing capabilities—SME competitive performance relationships, using a holistic, multidimensional approach to performance measurement in an emerging market context. The study provides SMEs and practitioners with valuable insights vis-à-vis the marketing capabilities they can selectively and strategically use to enhance their competitiveness.","PeriodicalId":52115,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Small Business Strategy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136033117","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We investigate how rural female entrepreneurs strategically navigate their businesses, taking into account market conditions, technical aspects, financial considerations, operational challenges, organizational dynamics, and innovation factors. Employing a mixed-method approach, we collected quantitative data from 183 formal and informal rural female entrepreneurs using a semi-structured questionnaire available in both English and Arabic, utilizing snowball sampling. Through Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), we identified strategic objectives, and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) assessed the alignment of the proposed approach with the data sample. Additionally, we present six brief case studies based on interviews with female entrepreneurs to gain insights into how personal traits influence strategic entrepreneurial behaviour. Our findings highlight the significant influence of age and education on the strategic goals, motivation, and decision-making of rural female entrepreneurs. This research has broader implications for policymakers and stakeholders, offering insights into encouraging inclusive and sustainable female entrepreneurship in diverse rural contexts. By recognizing the relationship of personal attributes and institutional forces, this study contributes to our understanding of entrepreneurship in a dynamic and culturally rich environment, ultimately contributing to socioeconomic development in Oman and beyond.","PeriodicalId":52115,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Small Business Strategy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136032569","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study investigates whether supply chain sensing (SCS) and supply chain agility (SCA) form a dynamic sensing and agility capability (DSAC) that enhances firm performance. Most empirical research on dynamic capabilities examines large organizations; this study investigates dynamic capabilities in small to medium enterprises (SMEs). SMEs form a significant part of the world economy and often have limited resources compared to large organizations. We utilize a survey of 139 respondents from SMEs in a single industry – the printing industry. Our analysis, both an EFA and PLS-SEM, find that SCS and SCA are different constructs that combine to form a dynamic sensing and agility capability. We found that this dynamic sensing and agility capability positively affects firm performance but not supply chain impact.","PeriodicalId":52115,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Small Business Strategy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136033026","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Against this backdrop, this paper aims to look at the potential of rural entrepreneurship as a form of financially managing the insecurity and vulnerabilities caused by the pandemic. The literature review shows that although international migration has played a crucial role in economic growth in Bangladesh, remittance has been underutilized and not translated into investment usually. The qualitative research methodology of the paper followed the thematic analysis design method to apprehend and explain the research findings. The findings of the study indicate that despite several challenges, rural entrepreneurship can indeed be a sustainable livelihood alternative that improves the resilience of returnee migrants. The right kinds of skillsets and adequate measures to tackle the infrastructural and socio-political barriers can boost rural entrepreneurship appreciably. Other recently published research works also highlight that entrepreneurship can be an effective tool for the reintegration of returnee migrants. This paper concludes that the sustainability of rural entrepreneurship will require engaging local development organizations, forming incubation and support centers, and organizing peer support groups.","PeriodicalId":52115,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Small Business Strategy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42257582","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, the present study has adopted the contingency theory in times of change and uncertainties caused by COVID-19 on MSMEs and found out the ways to enhance its resilience and sustained the growth of this sector. This study has applied descriptive statistics and probit regression analysis to estimate the resilience and sustained growth of the firms through a change in the variables like turnover, labour employed, investment, and age of the firm. Based on the survey of 225 firms, the study observed that around 90 percent of surveyed firms realized a decline in their turnover with a 25 percent reduction in employment that mostly occur in the informal category. Interestingly, there was some increase in formal employment in around 50 percent of firms because of the business commitment of firms, shortage of informal workers, and availability of workers at lower wages. Smaller and younger firms in terms of employment and investment have a higher possibility to be affected by the external shocks indicating that the firm agility increases with firm age and size. Support measures by the government during the pandemic were found to be insufficient and have limited relevance to the MSME sector in its revival. For enhancing the resilience and sustainability of MSMEs, the study suggests small firms should be encouraged to financial planning against business uncertainties and proposes financial security measures viz. Uncertainty Corpus Fund for Small Businesses and Small Business Insurance.","PeriodicalId":52115,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Small Business Strategy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41314636","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using digital technologies requires financial resources to create value. As these resources are limited in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and digital use cases and best practices are not well known, the purpose of this qualitative study is to investigate how SME managers are adding value and achieving a measurable return on investment (ROI) by using digital technologies. The study reviews a range of literature and models relating to digitisation impacts within SMEs. Further, it entails in-depth qualitative research on digital transformation in SMEs to explore the usage of digitisation and measurements of the added value and return. By inductively performing a multiple-case study of eight German SMEs, the researchers provide evidence to determine the usefulness of data analytics in SMEs. The study delivers a rich overview of added value, benefits and ways SMEs can use various ROI opportunities. Five benefits are revealed: increased revenue, improved customer satisfaction, improved employee satisfaction, efficiency and productivity. In addition, the case studies yield 25 significant positive ROIs in numerous use cases where data analytics solutions are implemented to improve revenue or cut costs. The weighted ROI average in this study is 13.44. Thus, most of the investments are highly worthwhile.","PeriodicalId":52115,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Small Business Strategy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49003451","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Small businesses usually have fewer resources and are more vulnerable to losing customers and investors, especially during crises. This study investigates how startups’ business processes were affected and how entrepreneurs managed this sudden change brought by the COVID-19 outbreak. Data were analyzed using qualitative research methods through in-depth interviews with the co-founders of eighteen startups. Results show that the three core business processes affected by the COVID-19 crisis were marketing and sales, logistics and operations, and organizational support. The way to succeed is to be flexible, agile, and adaptable, with technological knowledge focusing on digital channels to find novel opportunities and innovate. Additionally, resilience, self-improvement, education, technology readiness and adoption, close relationship with customers and other stakeholders, and incubation experience seem to shield startups against pandemic crisis outbreaks.","PeriodicalId":52115,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Small Business Strategy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43457400","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
