We report the results of surveillance in ICU and onco-hematological wards from 2002 to 2008, with analysis of possible risk factors: demographical data, use and type of antibiotic, days of hospitalization prior to sampling, and year of hospitalization. Colonization rate increased from 0.03 cases per 1000 bed-days in 2003 to 0.18 cases during 2008. Univariate analysis identified 7 risk factors associated with ERV colonization: hospitalization in ICU, use of antibiotics, use of 3 or more compounds, use of imipenem or colistin, >10 days of hospitalization prior to the study and year of hospitalization (before 2007 or after). Multivariate analysis by logistic binary regression showed that only the last two: >10 days of hospitalization prior to the study and year of hospitalization (before 2007 or after), were significantly associated to colonization by ERV.</p>","PeriodicalId":520768,"journal":{"name":"Revista chilena de infectologia : organo oficial de la Sociedad Chilena de Infectologia","volume":" ","pages":"374-5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2009-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"40054854","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These strains were isolated from patients with nosocomial infection at the Intensive Care Unit of the Complejo Hospitalario \"Ruiz y Paéz\" of Ciudad Bolívar, Bolívar State, Venezuela, from 2003 to 2006. In all isolates a metallo-enzyme activity was detected by using the double disk synergism test. PCR amplification of genes encoding the families IMP, VIM and SPM metallo-beta-lactamases showed the presence of a blaVIM gene in all strains studied. The objective of this work is to describe six isolates of ESBL producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa, retrieved from intensive care patients. The susceptibility test was performed by diffusion. For the phenotypic detection of ESBL, the following was assessed: the difference between ceftazidime ceftazidime/clavulanic acid (CAZ-CAC) and the synergy between imipenem-ceftazidime (IMI-CAZ) and cefepime-ceftazidime/clavulanic acid -ceftazidime (FEP-CAC-CAZ). The presence of metallo-beta-lactamases (MBL) was discarded through the double disc imipenem-EDTA/mercaptoacetic-meropenem (IMI-EDTA/SMA-MER) method. Molecular characterization of ESBL was performed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with blaGES primers. Synergy IMI-CAZ was observed in the studied strains; ESBL type GES was confirmed in five of them. The process of food irradiation has been extensively studied, nevertheless its use remains a matter of some controversy. Despite unanimous agreement within the medical community of the safety of this procedure, occasional concerns arise from the consumers. A common consumer misconception is that irradiation may turn the food \"radioactive\". A significant number of scientific studies on the topic were analyzed. We found no scientific study demonstrating that consumption of irradiated food might pose a risk to consumers. All studies conclude that food irradiation at the appropriate dose required to reduce contamination is safe and does not affect its nutritional value. In order to emphasize the issue we discuss the potential benefit vs harm of irradiation of food contaminated with E. coli 0157: H7. The association of this bacteria with severe disease and death has been clearly established in contrast with the lack of a demonstrated risk due to meat irradiation. We conclude that the risks of food irradiation remains \"unknown\" simply because, after four decades of research, none has been identified. In contrast to the risks of acquiring a food transmitted bacterial disease, the risk of irradiation is negligible.</p>","PeriodicalId":520768,"journal":{"name":"Revista chilena de infectologia : organo oficial de la Sociedad Chilena de Infectologia","volume":" ","pages":"318-30"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2009-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"40054868","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
