Using data from the nationally representative Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (Kindergarten cohort; eligible baseline sample n = 4,463; analytic baseline sample n = 3,973), the study examined whether meeting all three 24-hr MB guideline components concurrently (hereafter, \"adherence\") from the ages of 6-7 to 12-13 years was associated with performance on the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) across Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. Adherence was derived from time-use diaries at Waves 2 to 5 and linked to NAPLAN scale scores (0-1,000 scale) in reading, writing, spelling, grammar/punctuation, and numeracy. Structural nested mean models estimated via g-estimation were used to address measured time-varying confounding and to estimate cumulative and lead-lag associations. Each additional wave of adherence was associated with higher Year 9 scores in numeracy and reading (numeracy: 6.04 points; Bonferroni-adjusted 95% confidence interval [CI] [1.57, 10.37]; reading: 4.93 points; Bonferroni-adjusted 95% CI [0.53, 9.23]). Adherence measured at the exposure wave aligned with the next NAPLAN test occasion was associated with higher scores at the subsequent NAPLAN test in reading (5.44 points; Bonferroni-adjusted 95% CI [0.85, 10.22]). Health education efforts in schools and communities that promote adequate sleep, limit recreational screen time, and support daily moderate-to-vigorous physical activity may help align child health promotion with literacy and numeracy goals.
","PeriodicalId":520637,"journal":{"name":"Health education & behavior : the official publication of the Society for Public Health Education","volume":" ","pages":"10901981261480353"},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2026-09-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148901819","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this manuscript was to report the processes and findings associated with the HESPA III 2025 study to assess the validity of the Areas of Responsibility, Competencies, Sub-competencies, and Knowledge Areas for entry- and advanced-level health education specialists. Quantitative and qualitative methods were employed. Three data collection instruments were developed by the Health Education Specialist Practice Analysis III 2025 Steering Committee and a 14-member Practice Analysis Panel to survey practicing health education specialists on the knowledge and skills needed to perform duties in their ongoing roles. The instruments assessed the importance, frequency, and performance expectations of the elements of the model. Composite scores for Sub-Competencies were calculated, and subgroup comparisons were conducted to distinguish between levels of practice. A total of 2,337 health education specialists completed the surveys. The final validated hierarchical model included nine Areas of Responsibility, 35 Entry-level Competencies, 4 Advanced-level Competencies, 243 Sub-Competencies, nine Knowledge Topics, and 141 Knowledge Statements. Of the Sub-Competencies, 145 were classified as entry-level, and 98 were classified as advanced level. Health Education Specialist Practice Analysis III 2025 produced a validated hierarchical model descriptive of the current practice of health education specialists across work settings. The findings have professional preparation, professional development, and certification implications for the health education profession.
","PeriodicalId":520637,"journal":{"name":"Health education & behavior : the official publication of the Society for Public Health Education","volume":" ","pages":"10901981261479329"},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2026-08-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148842649","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study evaluated a 12-week structured, group-based, gender-affirming exercise programme for trans youth aged 12 to 24 years in Western Australia, recruited through a specialist paediatric gender diversity service and community-based health and well-being services. Using a nonrandomised effectiveness-implementation hybrid design, the study assessed both the real-world implementation outcomes and health-related effectiveness of the programme, which was collaboratively designed with trans young people, families, and health professionals and grounded in international physical activity guidelines. Twenty participants enrolled, with 18 completing postprogramme assessments. Quantitative analysis revealed modest improvements in muscular strength, endurance, power, aerobic recovery, and well-being from baseline to 12 weeks, alongside high acceptability, appropriateness, feasibility, fidelity, and retention rates. Qualitative analysis identified themes relating to pathways to participation, connection through shared experience, supportive facilitation, and perceived physical and psychological benefits. This study adds to the limited evidence base by demonstrating that gender-affirming exercise programmes are both feasible and acceptable across clinical and community settings. Findings support the broader integration of exercise into gender-affirming health care, with implications for the design of inclusive health services and physical activity policies that address the specific needs of trans youth.
","PeriodicalId":520637,"journal":{"name":"Health education & behavior : the official publication of the Society for Public Health Education","volume":" ","pages":"10901981261479283"},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2026-08-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148852346","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although physicians often report higher levels of physical activity than the general population, physical activity behaviors are variable, and some physicians still do not meet recommended activity guidelines. This systematic review examined whether physician physical activity impacts several professional domains: well-being and burnout, patient counseling and role-modeling behaviors, and cognitive function or clinical performance. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines, PubMed, Scopus, and SportDiscus were searched in October 2025. Twenty-three studies met the inclusion criteria. Across 10 studies evaluating physician well-being, higher physical activity was consistently associated with lower burnout, reduced stress, fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety, greater professional fulfillment and personal accomplishment, and higher quality of life. Twelve studies demonstrated associations between physicians' physical activity and greater frequency, confidence, and perceived effectiveness of physical activity counseling, with estimates ranging from odds ratio (OR) 2.43 to 5.72 among studies reporting ORs. Patients also reported greater trust in physically active physicians. Evidence directly linking physician physical activity to objective clinical performance outcomes was limited. One multimodal wellness intervention study incorporating physical activity reported improvements in self-reported cognitive adaptability. However, the independent effect of physical activity could not be isolated. Overall, physician physical activity appears associated with improved well-being and increased patient counseling, suggesting a promising target for clinician wellness initiatives.
","PeriodicalId":520637,"journal":{"name":"Health education & behavior : the official publication of the Society for Public Health Education","volume":" ","pages":"10901981261479365"},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2026-08-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148805170","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Existing digital health interventions often deliver more factual information, yet behavior change remains inconsistent, suggesting that effective education strategies must also address fear, distrust, reactance, and perceived social disapproval. This conceptual, theory-building paper develops an integrative cognitive-affective framework for designing digital tools, including conversational agents and tailored messaging platforms, that target cognitive and emotional determinants of HPV decisions. Using an integrative synthesis of established behavior change and health communication theories, the framework organizes constructs into a cognitive pathway (threat perception, efficacy beliefs, outcome expectations, and normative influence) and an affective and relational pathway (fear and concern, anger and reactance, empathy and altruistic motivation, trust, and perceived social presence), with emotional self-regulation capacity treated as a moderator. The framework proposes attitude and affective readiness as proximal mediators while allowing direct, reciprocal, and context-dependent relationships among constructs, intention, and behavior. The paper translates each construct into design principles for digital interventions and illustrates how they could be implemented and tested in conceptual chatbot-based encounters. This work contributes to health education scholarship by connecting established theory to contemporary digital health technologies for countering HPV vaccine misinformation. It offers guidance for building and evaluating emotionally intelligent, theory-informed interventions adaptable across clinical, school, and community settings.
","PeriodicalId":520637,"journal":{"name":"Health education & behavior : the official publication of the Society for Public Health Education","volume":" ","pages":"10901981261479333"},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2026-08-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148805185","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This review aimed to understand whether digital visual aids with lesion monitoring functions improve SSE behaviours without negatively impacting health outcomes. A systematic search was performed using six databases for relevant literature published before June 2025. Studies were included if they used digital interventions that could monitor skin lesions and reported outcomes on SSE behaviours or their antecedents, such as SSE knowledge, attitudes and intentions. Data were analysed following an adapted Technological Acceptance Model framework. Twenty studies conducted in the United States, the United Kingdom, or Australia involving 19 to 1,000 participants were included. Nineteen studies were randomised controlled trials (RCTs) or nested within RCTs, with one non-nested cross-sectional study. Interventions were delivered by smartphone and/or tablet applications, or websites. Studies found digital visual aids led to improved knowledge (n = 6), perceived usefulness (n = 5), ease of use (n = 7), attitudes towards SSE (n = 13), as well as intention to perform regular SSE (n = 5). Overall, there was a positive impact on health outcomes, with only two studies reporting an increase in anxiety and worry following the intervention. Three of seven studies demonstrated an increased likelihood of detecting malignant skin lesions when monitoring using digitally aided SSE. There is potential for digital visual aids to improve SSE behaviours. However, it is important to address barriers to the use of digital visual aids for SSE and to improve their integration with clinical care.
","PeriodicalId":520637,"journal":{"name":"Health education & behavior : the official publication of the Society for Public Health Education","volume":" ","pages":"10901981261479324"},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2026-08-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148805210","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Oral hygiene habits formed during childhood are essential to long-term oral and general health. This study assessed how well various school-based oral health education strategies improved kids' oral hygiene, during the education and in long term. Controlled interventional studies involving healthy children in school settings were used in a quantitative systematic review and meta-analysis. Teachers, dental professionals, or other educational methods were used to deliver the educational programs. Standardized oral hygiene indices were used to compare the non-educated control groups before and after the intervention. Artificial intelligence-assisted screening was used to improve the efficiency and consistency of the study selection process. While alternative educational approaches showed more limited effects, teacher-led and health care worker-led interventions were linked to significant short-term improvements in oral hygiene. However, over longer follow-up periods, improvements were not consistently maintained. These results show how crucial schools are as venues for promoting oral health, but they also suggest that traditional education-focused interventions might not be enough to bring about long-lasting behavioral change. To achieve long-lasting population-level oral health benefits, program design, implementation, and integration into larger health promotion strategies may need to be strengthened.
","PeriodicalId":520637,"journal":{"name":"Health education & behavior : the official publication of the Society for Public Health Education","volume":" ","pages":"10901981261474902"},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2026-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148805208","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Existing literature has identified several factors but rarely integrates multilevel and intersectional perspectives. This scoping review aimed to map existing evidence on factors influencing oral PrEP uptake and adherence among MSM globally, with a focus on how intersecting identities influence these factors. This review included studies published and conducted between 2015 and 2025. The search strategy was implemented across four electronic databases: MEDLINE (via PubMed), CINAHL (via EBSCO), Scopus, and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses. Eligible studies were analysed using the Social-Ecological Model and the Intersectionality Framework to synthesise multilevel influences on PrEP uptake and adherence. Thirteen studies were eligible and included in the review. Findings of the study identified several barriers, including low perceived HIV risk, stigma, mistrust of health care systems, limited provider engagement, and financial limitations. Facilitators included risk awareness, perceived benefits of PrEP, supportive providers, and affirming community environments. However, the psychological and behavioral pathways through which perceived social isolation is associated with distress remain incompletely understood, particularly in the context of digital health behaviors. Drawing primarily on Social Cognitive Theory, while also considering health anxiety, uncertainty management, and stress-and-coping perspectives, this study examined a serial mediation model in which eHealth engagement and health self-efficacy were specified as ordered mediators linking social isolation to psychological distress among U.S. adults. Data were drawn from the Health Information National Trends Survey, Cycle 7 (HINTS 7; N = 5,533). Social isolation was measured using the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Social Isolation T-score, and psychological distress was assessed with the Patient Health Questionnaire-4 (PHQ-4). Serial mediation was estimated using survey-weighted regression models with jackknife replicate variance estimation, adjusting for age, sex, education, income, race/ethnicity, and chronic condition count. Social isolation was positively associated with PHQ-4 distress. Significant indirect effects were observed through health self-efficacy and through eHealth engagement alone; however, the serial indirect pathway through eHealth engagement and health self-efficacy was not significant. Findings are consistent with health self-efficacy as a theoretically meaningful pathway linking social isolation and psychological distress, whereas eHealth engagement may reflect reactive health information seeking among more isolated or distressed adults.
