Modern data environments, especially those subject to Māori Data Sovereignty (MDSov) constraints, face technical challenges balancing data security and privacy with accessibility and collective benefit. We are exploring how modern web technologies, including open-source tools such as JavaScript, can be combined with the data analytics software R to build modern data-driven web applications with embedded data sovereignty capability. The Rserve software allows JavaScript to communicate with R, and we are developing new technology that enables deployment within diverse data environments in ways that align with MDSov. This approach embeds technical solutions to the challenges of implementing MDSov principles within a data environment, creating data systems that are engineered to enable data owners to control data access, sharing and use.
","PeriodicalId":520341,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Royal Society of New Zealand","volume":"56 2","pages":"e70047"},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2026-04-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC13114793/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147794707","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite these challenges, Pacific communities demonstrated resilience, culturally grounded leadership, and the ability to meet community needs through collective action. This qualitative review of peer-reviewed literature, government reports, and community-led research identified five interconnected themes: (1) community partnerships; (2) Pacific-centred approaches; (3) clear and trusted communication; (4) digital inclusion and literacy skills; and (5) economic support and sustainability. From these themes, key enablers were identified, which included community leadership, trusted communication strategies, and agile local systems, alongside barriers such as underinvestment, digital exclusion, reliance on unpaid labour, and limited inclusion of Pacific leadership in early planning. The findings highlight that Pacific-led systems are not supplementary but an essential public health infrastructure. Embedding these approaches within national emergency planning, through sustainable funding, formal governance roles, and strengthened digital inclusion, offers a pathway to a more equitable, trusted, and resilient pandemic response.
","PeriodicalId":520341,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Royal Society of New Zealand","volume":"56 2","pages":"e70049"},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2026-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC13110454/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147794723","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traditional methods rely heavily on on-site observations and frequent boat trips to monitor buoy flotation and other operational elements, often resulting in limited and sporadic assessments that can hinder the decision-making process. This article proposes using 3D reconstruction techniques to reconstruct mussel farm scenes from the vessel-captured video footage, allowing for holistic visualizations from various perspectives and enabling comprehensive post analysis of the mussel farm dynamics. While previous efforts relied on traditional Structure from Motion and multiview techniques for mussel farm scene reconstruction, they often struggled to capture fine details and faced challenges with reflective water surfaces due to their reliance on local features. In this work, we are the first to explore and extend the capabilities of neural radiance field (NeRF) for mussel farm reconstruction. To overcome the practical challenges of this unique environment, we propose a multi-NeRF framework with region-specific modeling, enabling the capture of both the global scene and finer details of key elements such as buoys. Furthermore, we introduce a geometry regularization method to improve the planar reconstruction of the water surface. Our results demonstrate significant advancements in 3D reconstruction quality over previous methods, particularly in mesh completeness and the precise handling of specular and diffuse texture details while also enabling realistic novel view synthesis. These advancements, designed particularly for mussel farm applications, can contribute to its intelligent monitoring and management by providing a comprehensive understanding of the farm's geometry and dynamics, ultimately facilitating more informed decision-making processes.
","PeriodicalId":520341,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Royal Society of New Zealand","volume":"56 2","pages":"e70044"},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2026-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC13078593/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147694621","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study employed bibliometric methods to systematically examine the bibliographic characteristics, knowledge structure, and evolutionary trends in the field of PHERC, aiming to provide evidence-based guidance for future academic research and practical work. A total of 2,325 valid literatures were retrieved and collected from 2010 to 2025 from Web of Science and CNKI database. The collaboration networks, keyword co-occurrence, and temporal trends were conducted by VOSviewer, and Biblio Vista. The results indicated three distinct phases of publication: steady growth (2010-2018), rapid expansion (2019-2022), and fluctuation period (2023-2025). The USA led in productivity (38.49%) and hold a dominant position in international cooperation. Only 50 authors have published more than five papers on relevant topics, and a large-scale collaboration network has not yet been established. COVID-19 (591 times), health communication (481 times), and public health (326 times) were the most frequently occurring keywords and reflecting the focus areas. Five core thematic clusters were identified, encompassing risk management, community empowerment, information ecosystem governance, trust building, and surveillance policy. This study fills the gap in the knowledge graph analysis of the PHERC field and complements existing research in the broader domain of public health emergency management, which also revealed disparities in global research and patterns of collaboration, underscoring the necessity of promoting equitable development. Future research should prioritize the innovation of digital communication technologies and foster more equitable global cooperation, so as to improve global PHERC capacity.
","PeriodicalId":520341,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Royal Society of New Zealand","volume":"56 2","pages":"e70045"},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2026-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC13056248/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147641198","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The government-funded programme included provision of heat pumps in already insulated houses that lack efficient heating. Staggered installation enables difference-in-difference estimates of impacts of heat pump installation on living area temperatures and relative humidity, and on household electricity use. Surveys conducted before and after installation provide demographic and housing information plus measures of occupants' wellbeing. Living areas of treated houses experience increases in temperature which are most pronounced around breakfast and evening times, and when outdoor temperatures are low. Houses also experience reductions in relative humidity. Winter electricity use falls in houses that have a heat pump fitted, with electricity savings peaking in the evening. Heat pump installation reduces perceptions of living in a cold house and improves aspects of residents' mental wellbeing during winter.
","PeriodicalId":520341,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Royal Society of New Zealand","volume":"56 2","pages":"e70043"},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2026-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC13052806/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147635535","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on high-quality evidence from randomised controlled trials of a substantial reduction in the risk of severe exacerbations, New Zealand and international guidelines recommend ICS/formoterol as the preferred reliever inhaler for use by adolescents and adults with asthma, across the range of asthma severity, rather than SABA reliever-based regimens. However, the neurocognitive mechanisms underlying this susceptibility remain poorly understood. Addressing this gap, our study systematically examines how interfering sounds modulate PAD. Using a 2 (interfering sound type: N [industrial noise] vs. S [steady-state]) × 2 (PAD outcome: PAD+ [correct aberrant identification] vs. PAD- [correct normal recognition]) within-subjects design, we integrated behavioral measures and electroencephalography time-frequency analyses to assess 35 participants. Behaviorally, noise exposure significantly increased reaction times and error rates, though prolonged exposure elicited adaptive performance improvements, suggesting dynamic noise-driven behavioral recalibration. Neurally, we identified dissociable oscillatory mechanisms: prefrontal-temporal β oscillations underpinned top-down attentional control, whereas temporal θ oscillations facilitated cognitive-affective integration. Critically, progressive noise exposure facilitated environmental adaptability through dual mechanisms-habituation of the orienting response coupled with negative affect regulation, thereby reducing attentional disengagement from focal tasks and enhancing goal-directed behavioral efficiency. These findings advance the duplex mechanism theory by delineating its neural substrates across frequency-, region-, and time-specific dimensions. Moreover, this study establishes a healthy control baseline and identifies candidate biomarkers for investigating the pathological mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases.
","PeriodicalId":520341,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Royal Society of New Zealand","volume":"56 2","pages":"e70024"},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2026-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12959611/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147380431","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
