As the industry expands into more exposed offshore environments, maintaining proper buoyancy in mussel farm structures becomes increasingly challenging. Buoyancy issues can result in significant product losses through sinking or mussel detachment, creating a critical need for scalable, automated monitoring solutions. This paper introduces BuoyancyNet, a novel deep learning-based method for predicting float buoyancy in mussel aquaculture. Using a labelled dataset of over 36,000 float images from mussel farms, the proposed approach leverages a vision transformer enhanced with one-dimensional convolutional layers to learn spatial relationships between consecutive floats along a float line. BuoyancyNet achieves a 3.5% improvement in multi-class classification accuracy over baseline models and demonstrates robust performance under diverse environmental conditions, including poor lighting and occlusions. By addressing challenges in large-scale buoyancy management, this approach provides a promising step toward more efficient and scalable monitoring solutions for NZ's mussel farming industry.</p>","PeriodicalId":520341,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Royal Society of New Zealand","volume":"55 6","pages":"2013-2041"},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2025-04-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12315141/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144777580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aotearoa New Zealand was initially a Tupeka Kore (Tobacco Free) nation and Māori leaders have led calls for measures that would end the harms smoking imposes. Their vision inspired a national movement and later saw a new law introduced that mandated denicotinisation, reduced the supply of tobacco, and introduced a smokefree generation. The National-led coalition Government repealed these measures, drawing on arguments often advanced by tobacco companies. Using the Policy Dystopia Model, we analysed tobacco industry narratives and reviewed politicians' use of industry arguments. We found coalition Government members drew on prohibition and illicit trade arguments, which segued into public safety concerns, despite weak evidence for these claims. To protect innovative public health policies, we argue for stronger lobbying regulation to reduce tobacco companies' ability to interfere with policy making and improve compliance with Article 5.3 of the World Health Organization's Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. Stronger regulation of lobbying would protect critical public health policies that could profoundly reduce cancer rates from commercial interests.</p>","PeriodicalId":520341,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Royal Society of New Zealand","volume":"55 5","pages":"1190-1208"},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2025-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12288172/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144736530","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, discourses on gaming are often adult-centric and position online gaming as detrimental to youth mental health and wellbeing. There is extensive research into online gaming and its intersections with gender and age, but our interests lie in gaming literature at the intersection of Pacific ethnicities. This article presents the findings of a scoping review focused on Pacific youth and online gaming. In line with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, 56 studies were identified, with only 3 studies meeting the inclusion criteria. These studies investigated the relationship between gaming and gambling among Pacific youth and the gamification of mental health support through computerised cognitive behavioural theory (cCBT). They found that, while Pacific people spend more money on lootboxes than other ethnic groups, there is no association between purchasing lootboxes and gambling. Additionally, Pacific peoples are able to suggest solutions to mitigate risk of gaming harm. Findings of the scoping review indicate a scarcity of literature on online gaming and Pacific youth wellbeing. There is a need to explore this relationship between gaming and Pacific youth wellbeing from Pacific wellbeing perspectives.</p>","PeriodicalId":520341,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Royal Society of New Zealand","volume":"55 6","pages":"1452-1471"},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2025-04-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12315164/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144777613","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to explore community pharmacy density and associated factors at national and subnational levels in New Zealand (NZ). Publicly available, aggregate data for 2020 were sourced. Community pharmacy density (number of community pharmacies per 10,000 population) was calculated at the national level and at the subnational level using territorial authority (TA) areas. Associations between four TA characteristics (type [cities or districts], island [North or South], older age and deprivation score) and continuous community pharmacy density were assessed via linear regression. There were 1,154 community pharmacies. Numbers of community pharmacies per 10,000 population were 2.27 for NZ, 2.25 and 2.33 for the North and South Islands, respectively, and 2.45 and 1.95 for cities and districts, respectively. The only TA characteristic associated with community pharmacy density was TA type: cities had significantly higher community pharmacy density than districts (adjusted <math><mtext>β</mtext></math>  = 0.58, 95% confidence interval = 0.13-1.02). TAs with lowest-quintile pharmacy densities (≤1.40) were clustered towards the south of the North Island and south-west of the South Island. This study could inform development of policies aimed at providing equitable access to community pharmacies throughout NZ.</p>","PeriodicalId":520341,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Royal Society of New Zealand","volume":"55 6","pages":"1998-2012"},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2025-04-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12315173/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144777582","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moreover, the rates of diagnosed mental and behavioural disorders in adolescents have risen significantly over recent years. The prevalence of poor mental health in Pacific Island populations remains poorly defined, particularly during the period of adolescence which represents a sensitive period for the development of mental health disorders. In the present study, a survey of mental health in adolescents in the Cook Islands was undertaken using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Fifty-seven adolescents (aged 13-14 years) representing three schools across the Cook Islands completed the self-report SDQ. A large proportion of students presented with total SDQ scores that well exceeded those mapped against the expected band prevalence with 38% of adolescents having total difficulties scores in the High-Very High category versus an expected banding for these categories at 10%. This study set out to identify key elements of co-designed research and health services important to working with, and achieving equity of health outcomes for, Māori and Pacific communities living in Aotearoa New Zealand. A qualitative evaluation of five research projects, which used co-design with partners from Māori and Pacific communities, involved interviews with researchers and community partners. A Kaupapa Māori framework developed to assess six principles important to Māori co-design was used, and data were coded and thematically analysed. Four additional principles of good co-design and nine lessons for improving the conduct of co-design research were identified. A conceptual model was developed, the Co-design Research Integrity Poutama, which defines increasing levels of co-design exemplified by greater levels of transparency and power-sharing. It required a genomics platform to facilitate linkage of whole genome DNA sequencing data, healthcare records, and mātauranga whakapapa (genealogical knowledge) in a powerful, secure, and transparently governed computational environment. A team of Māori and non-Māori with diverse professional and cultural expertise co-developed Rakeiora; embedding te ao Māori (Māori world) was crucial, including principles derived from: tikanga Māori (Māori traditional rules, values, culture), Te Tiriti o Waitangi (agreement between the British Crown and many Māori chiefs), and data sovereignty. This internationally unique prospective hard-wiring of Indigenous values into a computational platform created a robust infrastructure which benefits all participants. Application of best practice standards and tools facilitate transparency, provide kaitiaki (guardians) control and governance over data and analyses, and enable genomic, bioinformatic and statistical analyses by researchers within a computational 'walled garden'. Although a prototype, the platform is designed to be scalable, accommodating diverse data types and communities, each with their own specific interests and needs. In response to this interest, the Kaitiaki Intelligence Platform project was launched to design an Indigenous ESN. This paper examines the types of environmental data that MAC and iwi partners aim to capture with an ESN, as well as their preferences for data structure, querying, and communication. The findings indicate that these partners seek to collect a wide range of biophysical data using both remote and in-situ sensing technologies, combined with Place-based intelligence informed by mātauranga (Māori knowledge/knowledge system). They prefer to structure data using Māori environmental ontologies and apply mātauranga to train AI systems that can identify environmental health indicators and model the balance between human and non-human environmental persons.
