{"title":"A Judgment of Parodies? ‘Momus’ on a Black-Figure Hydria in Chicago","authors":"L. Coo","doi":"10.3138/mous.19.2.02","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3138/mous.19.2.02","url":null,"abstract":"Abstract:A Judgment of Paris scene on a black-figure hydria of ca. 510–500 bc includes a mysterious winged man among its characters. In 1980, Erika Simon identified the figure as Momus, which would make this the only plausible example of the god’s depiction to survive in ancient art. This article re-examines Simon’s argument through both a reconsideration of the ancient literary sources for Momus and a new visual analysis of the scene on the hydria. By drawing attention to the previously underappreciated parodic elements of the vase painting, it proposes a new interpretation of both the picture’s comic tone and the question of the winged figure’s identity.Résumé:Une scène du Jugement de Pâris représentée sur une hydrie à figure noire d’environ 510-500 av. J.-C. inclut un mystérieux homme ailé parmi ses personnages. En 1980, Erika Simon a identifié ce personnage comme étant Momus, ce qui en ferait le seul exemple plausible de représentation du dieu à survivre dans l’art ancien. Cet article réexamine l’argumentation de Simon en reconsidérant à la fois les sources littéraires anciennes traitant de Momus et une nouvelle analyse visuelle de la scène représentée sur l’hydrie. En attirant l’attention sur les éléments parodiques auparavant sousestimés de la peinture du vase, cet article propose une nouvelle interprétation de l’aspect comique de l’image et de la question de l’identité du personnage ailé.","PeriodicalId":52031,"journal":{"name":"Mouseion-Journal of the Classical Association of Canada","volume":"7 1","pages":"175 - 195"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2023-04-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83652068","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sur le plan syntaxique, les emplois intraphrastiques de tamen peuvent fonctionner comme un corrélatif, être postposés à un participe, figurer dans des subordonnées ou encore être précédés d’un coordonnant additif ou négatif. En revanche, les emplois transphrastiques sont attestés dans des énoncés affirmatifs et interrogatifs ainsi que dans des phrases elliptiques, et sont associés aux connecteurs de type coordonnant. Sur le plan sémantico-pragmatique, tamen remplit ordinairement la fonction de dénégation et celle de l’opposition directe. Dans le cadre du déroulement du discours, tamen fait office de marqueur de retour sur le « dit » et de marqueur de transition, assurant ainsi la cohérence logique du discours.","PeriodicalId":52031,"journal":{"name":"Mouseion-Journal of the Classical Association of Canada","volume":"12 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2022-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81783477","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
