Due to their geographical remoteness, extreme conditions and lower levels of human activity, the Earth's polar regions have seen fewer invasions to date compared to temperate and tropical areas. However, increasing human activity in high latitude areas brings the risk of many more species introductions, while climate warming is reducing many of the abiotic barriers to species establishment. Polar ecosystems are particularly susceptible to the negative effects associated with invasive species due to their low native diversity, simple food chains and the availability of apparently vacant niches. To date, few studies have tested the effects of non-native species on soil properties in the typically nutrient-limited polar regions. Non-native arthropods and plants may introduce their novel microbiomes and fungal endophytes to a new environment, and this can lead to changes in organic matter decomposition and levels of bioavailable nutrients such as nitrogen. Decomposition rates may be increased further in synergy with climate warming, releasing locked up nutrients in addition to nutrient enrichment facilitated by invasive species. Enhanced nutrient availability and microbial activity may, in turn, create more favourable conditions for the establishment and, for some, the subsequent invasion of further non-native species, as well as potentially benefiting native arthropod and plant communities. This review characterises the interactions between invasive species and global change, highlighting current and predicted future impacts on soil health in polar ecosystems. In addition, we identify priority areas for further research to better understand these impacts and guide management practices.
","PeriodicalId":520249,"journal":{"name":"npj biodiversity","volume":"5 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC13197456/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148008466","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Holotypes, the name-bearing specimens required for the description of new species, are central to this imbalance. We investigated how geopolitical and socioeconomic factors shape the deposition of mammalian holotypes described over the past 35 years. While 95% of post-1990 mammal discoveries originated in the Global South, 60% of their holotypes are housed abroad, mainly in Global North institutions. Wealthier nations extracted holotype specimens disproportionately, especially from biodiverse regions with weak environmental policies, despite stronger local academic capacity improving retention. Maintaining these inequalities not only hampers efforts to reduce disparities in the distribution of type material, but also limits the discovery and revision of species. Addressing these disparities requires coordinated structural investment in local collections and taxonomic capacity, governance measures that prioritize regional deposition and equitable specimen management, and access policies that improve repatriation, mobility, and shared control over type material.
","PeriodicalId":520249,"journal":{"name":"npj biodiversity","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC13627701/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147985050","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most biodiversity assessments emphasize insects, fish, and birds. By contrast, schemes that directly measure and reward the microbial diversity, the foundations of ecosystem services in soils, aquatic systems, and urban green spaces, remain scarce. Meanwhile, the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework calls for mobilizing at least USD 200 billion per year by 2030, and the Global Biodiversity Framework Fund has launched; but current flows into PES are limited, and PES explicitly targeting microbes is largely uncharted. This Perspective argues that microbially focused PES is rare and, even when they exist, they tend to be biased toward specific pathogens or pollution indicators. However, measurement, reporting, and verification of various microorganisms are operationally feasible and methods to strengthen source attribution and contribution estimation are now mature; and channeling a share of Nature-Positive finance to microbial ecosystem assessments could jointly advance drinking-water safety, soil health, agricultural resilience, and urban public health. We discuss the importance of microbial-PES in conserving and enhancing ecosystem services.
","PeriodicalId":520249,"journal":{"name":"npj biodiversity","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-05-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC13590658/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147978432","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We sampled ants, dung beetles, and fruit-feeding butterflies across two mountaintop habitats: campo rupestre and forest islands in the Southern Espinhaço Range, Brazil. We quantified temporal dynamics by assessing variations in species richness across sampling years and in species composition, focusing on species gains and losses. Species richness did not differ between environments and most species were unique to either campo rupestre or forest islands. We found no consistent pattern of species gains or losses among insect communities or habitat types, with such temporal dynamics being more prevalent for butterflies in the campo rupestre. In the campo rupestre, recent periods were dominated by colonization-driven homogenization following widespread species losses. In forest islands, extirpations prevailed for ants, colonizations for butterflies, and processes were balanced for dung beetles. The campo rupestre showed greater temporal dynamics in species richness and composition, particularly for butterflies and dung beetles, resulting in more frequent species gains. Habitat type shapes the temporal dynamics of insect communities in heterogeneous tropical mountaintop landscapes. Forest islands sustain more temporally stable insect metacommunities, while open environments and more mobile organisms have greater temporal dynamics.
","PeriodicalId":520249,"journal":{"name":"npj biodiversity","volume":"5 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC13179956/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147960597","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While dryland ecosystems are anticipated to expand, and management activities like rewilding and habitat restoration are increasing, the use of data streams and modern analytical methods to plan conservation interventions and quantify their effectiveness remains limited. We recommend establishing a global network for dryland practitioners to bridge critical data gaps, providing two real-world examples. A pilot study in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia shows how coordinated use of multiple remote sensors and a standardised data pipeline could improve interoperability and facilitate the use of more accurate ecological models. Likewise, the Wildlife Observatory of Australia demonstrates that robust metadata and shared analytical frameworks enable the effective integration of diverse datasets using hierarchical occupancy models. Key steps to build this network include forming a steering committee, engaging stakeholders from various backgrounds, piloting projects in different regions, agreeing on protocols and exploring seed funding opportunities.
","PeriodicalId":520249,"journal":{"name":"npj biodiversity","volume":"5 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC13179949/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147960634","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our objectives were to evaluate the taxonomic composition reported on a global repository (GBIF plus GABI) and regional compilations (PELD-CRSC plus Atlantic Ants), to compare stacked species distribution models (SSDMs) built from each source, and to examine climate-richness relationships using a combined model. We compiled occurrences, cleaned the data and then fitted SSDMs with five algorithms and using five bioclimatic variables selected after variance-inflation screening. We also examined richness maps and climate-richness relationships using Spearman correlations. Subfamily and species compositions diverged across repositories. The global dataset contained only ~10% of the records of the regional dataset, resulting in much lower richness magnitudes. Despite this, the models from both datasets were highly correlated. All models consistently indicated higher species richness in the southern Espinhaço, which was strongly associated with lower isothermality and higher precipitation. Despite the importance of global repositories, regional ones are essential for accurate estimates of ant composition and richness. Thus, integrating datasets improved coverage and highlighted significant knowledge gaps in central and northern Espinhaço.
","PeriodicalId":520249,"journal":{"name":"npj biodiversity","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC13234289/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147950529","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We investigate changes in understory vascular plant communities over 25 years (1999-2023) in 31 Italian permanent ICP Forests plots across four forest biomes. We assessed temporal dynamics of alpha diversity with respect to climate, forest structure and soil parameters. Analysing the two components of beta diversity (turnover and nestedness) at two temporal scales, we distinguish between interannual variations and long-term trends. Richness loss occurred in alpine coniferous and temperate deciduous forests, driven by increased canopy closure and climatic extremes. In these forests, species decline corresponded to long-term trends in both turnover and nestedness. Conversely, Mediterranean (i.e., sclerophyllous evergreen forests) forests exhibited stable richness, characterized by interannual species turnover. Species filtering and replacement have increased in alpine coniferous and temperate deciduous forests, reflecting shifts from initial environmental conditions. Our results underscore changes in forest understory diversity over time, particularly in forests impacted by historic management practices and climatic extremes. Conversely, Mediterranean drought-prone forests with steady canopy cover appear more stable. Continued long-term monitoring is essential to assess how canopy stabilization and climate change interact in shaping future dynamics.
","PeriodicalId":520249,"journal":{"name":"npj biodiversity","volume":"5 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC13043715/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147597465","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Odonata species play vital ecological roles in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems; yet, they face escalating threats from climate change, habitat loss, and pollution. This synthesis of 200 years of Vietnamese Odonata research bridges knowledge gaps, offering insights into tropical ecosystem vulnerability in a changing world. We propose an integrative framework scalable to all aquatic invertebrates and understudied tropical regions to advance research and conservation: (1) enhance larval and adult taxonomy and phylogeny using morphology, DNA barcoding (COI gene), and whole genome sequencing for ecologically important, critically endangered or rare species; (2) implement monitoring programmes with eDNA metabarcoding, remote sensing, automated imaging, and citizen science to track distributions, phenology, and traits; (3) conduct eco-evolutionary and ecotoxicological studies with multi-omics to elucidate mechanisms underlying ecophysiology and evolutionary responses; and (4) apply machine learning to project distributions and responses to environmental changes.
