While the design respects the privacy of the inhabitants one cannot help noticing the skilled craftsmanship and solid durability throughout. Details in the decoration differ in character but are integrated with fine judgement. The building as a whole is charming: elements of style are fused into a unique synthesis and traces of the human touch are refreshing in a technological era.","PeriodicalId":52000,"journal":{"name":"New Contree","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2024-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141644689","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is reflected in het the approaches they adopt respectively. They share, however, a common field of investigation: the development of an area or region through time, which explains why in the last twenty-five years the differences between them have become blurred. Of all the definitions for historical geography probably only four are significant today: the geography behind history; the reconstruction of past landscapes; the evolution of the cultural landscape; and the study of relict features. As far as the prospects for historical geography in South Africa are concerned, broad outlines only have been drawn and there are ample fields for research, e.g. frontier studies, which relate to colonisation and settlement history, and the study of relict landscapes. A vast number of questions about the evolution and appearance of the landscape need to be answered, and both historical geography and local history seek these answers.","PeriodicalId":52000,"journal":{"name":"New Contree","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2024-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141648964","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the beginning of the nineteenth, the settlement of increasing numbers of Whites and Basters, and the Xhosa under Jan Kaffer forced the Bushmen northwards. With the passing of time a civilised community developed at Carnarvon. Rhenish missionaries were the first to preach the Word of God in this area and later churches of other denominations were established. Proper local administration was introduced, communication with the outside world improved and by the turn of the century the district could boast of social and cultural activities. Although agriculture dominates the local economy, secondary industries and commerce have made an important contribution towards rendering the area self-supporting.","PeriodicalId":52000,"journal":{"name":"New Contree","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2024-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141648048","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Rumours of promising gold deposits in Klerksdorp in 1888 changed the town overnight into a hive of activity. Towards the end of 1890 the survival of the town and the mining industry was threatened by inefficient mining methods and overcapitalization. Potgieter and Louis Trichardt had already selected a site for a town at the foot of the Soutpansberg. This town, however, was only built in 1848 after Potgieter's party had left Ohrigstad because of his desire to live beyond the British sphere of influence and the need for a northern route to communicate with Inhambane. At first called Oude Dorp, the name of the town was later changed to Soutpansbergdorp and in 1855 to Schoemansdal. It was an attractive town and flourished because of hunting, the ivory trade, agriculture and the salt pan near it. Itinerant and ivory traders provided the necessities of life, and constituted the community's main link with the outside world. The arrival of the Rev. Van Warmelo in 1864 and the teacher Van Boeschoten in 1866 added much to the spiritual and social welfare of the community. The town was eventually evacuated in 1867 because of the Transvaal government's irresolute attitude towards the struggle of the inhabitants with the Venda. Only in 1898 was a new town, Louis Trichardt, founded near by.","PeriodicalId":52000,"journal":{"name":"New Contree","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2024-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141647531","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
