Optical measurement techniques are calibration-free and highly sensitive. This technique was used to measure the magnetostrictive strain of neodymium gallate at a temperature of 49 mK to be λ = 1.3 × 10-5 at 3 T, with a sensitivity of 3.0 × 10-8. We highlight the interesting properties of the crystal's magnetic ordering. The sensitivity of this technique was limited by the wavemeter used to measure the laser frequency, and significant improvements in the sensitivity should be possible.","PeriodicalId":519534,"journal":{"name":"The Review of scientific instruments","volume":"1188 ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140797639","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The electron cloud undergoes radial expansion by interacting with the residual gas molecules, and it is finally lost upon hitting the Penning trap electrodes. It has been confirmed through detailed experimental investigations that the unique temporal pattern of frequency variation is a consequence of the cloud's radial expansion. Consequently, this approach offers a non-destructive means for single-shot detection, enabling continuous monitoring of the electron cloud's radial expansion during the confinement time. This technique offers a significant advantage over its destructive alternatives.","PeriodicalId":519534,"journal":{"name":"The Review of scientific instruments","volume":"42 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140797690","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The designed motor has the advantages of high power density and a large motion range. In addition, because the designed motor has an irregular three-dimensional (3D) structure, it is difficult to perform dynamic magnetic field calculations with existing methods. To solve this problem, we propose a modified 3D dynamic magnetic equivalent circuit (3DD-MEC). The proposed method establishes a node network according to the structural edge features of the motor core and the permanent magnet and calculates the reluctance of the connecting branch based on the differential principle. Moreover, a connection strategy of air-gap nodes in 3D space is formulated, and the magnetic saturation characteristics of the iron core are reflected by an iterative calculation of magnetic permeability. Using the 3DD-MEC method, the 3D dynamic magnetic field information of the HE-MDOFSM can be quickly and accurately calculated. Finally, the reliability of the method is verified by simulation and experiment, which provides a reference for improving the design optimization efficiency of HE-MDOFSM.</p>","PeriodicalId":519534,"journal":{"name":"The Review of scientific instruments","volume":" ","pages":"115005"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2022-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"40569993","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The imaging of concrete/reinforced cement concrete structures (RCC) is a challenging task due to the non-homogeneous properties of the concrete material. To address this challenge, a novel real-time, re-configurable, four-channel embedded system has been designed and developed to image the internal details of the concrete samples using the water immersion pulse-echo (PE) mode under automation, which needs access from one side of the structure. The system performs data acquisition (DAQ) of the amplified echo signals under the control of the computer via a universal serial bus interface. A graphical user interface (GUI) has been developed using C# in a Visual environment, for image acquisition and control of the DAQ parameters. The performance of the system has been evaluated by acquiring B-Scan images of three types of concrete test blocks having side drilled holes (SDHs) and simulated inclusions embedded in concrete blocks of M20 grade using a linear array of 92 kHz water immersion transducers operating in under-water PE mode. The acquired B-Scan images revealed the internal details of the concrete test blocks with sizing of the SDHs and inclusions. Therefore, the developed four-channel ultrasonic imaging system can visualize the internal details of under-water concrete structures, such as bridges and sea links, with the help of corresponding 2-D cross-sectional images, acquired using the developed system.</p>","PeriodicalId":519534,"journal":{"name":"The Review of scientific instruments","volume":" ","pages":"114706"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2022-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"40457970","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The instrument and beamline are also configurable for thermal neutron imaging. The imaging apparatus is composed of a lens coupled, water-cooled Electron Multiplying Charge Coupled Device camera, a front-surface mirror, and a high light yield plastic Polyvinyl toluene scintillator. The instrument sits on a mobile cart. A total of 5 motion-control stages are built into the system for XYZ and rotational degrees of freedom for sample positioning; the fifth stage fine tunes the focal distance between the camera and the scintillator to achieve on-line focusing. A Python code with a user-friendly graphical user interface controls the fully automated image acquisition, not requiring user interaction, yet facilitating tracking of the image acquisition. A complete fast neutron computed tomography dataset with 360 projections requires less than 3 h, with 30 s per projection. On-line focusing is accomplished with a commercial, off-the-shelf, dielectrically actuated liquid lens. Finally, tomographic reconstructions are visualized using the Livermore Tomography Tools software package. The effective pixel size (width and height) is ≈0.1058 mm, yielding a minimum voxel size of 0.1058 × 0.1058 × 0.1058 mm<sup>3</sup>, and produces a spatial resolution of 231 μm when calculated from knife-edge measurements.</p>","PeriodicalId":519534,"journal":{"name":"The Review of scientific instruments","volume":" ","pages":"113702"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2022-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"40458363","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The sympathetic cooling time of the 40Ca+-27Al+ ion pair is measured. Two traps are employed to compare the loading time from two directions and it was found that the loading from the axial direction takes much shorter time than loading from the radial direction of the trap. This is measurable as the mean longitudinal and transverse energy spreads in the photoemitted electron beam (MLE and MTE respectively); consequently, MLE and MTE are notable figures of merit for photocathodes used as electron sources in particle accelerators. The overall energy spread is defined by the sum of the MTE and the MLE, and the minimization of MTE is crucial to reduce emittance and thus generate a high-brightness electron beam. Reducing the electron beam emittance in an accelerator that drives a Free-Electron Laser (FEL) delivers a significant reduction in the saturation length for an x-ray FEL, thus reducing the machine's construction footprint and operating costs while increasing the x-ray beam brightness. The ability to measure the transverse energy distribution curve of photoelectrons emitted from a photocathode is a key enabler in photocathode research and development that has prompted the Accelerator Science and Technology Centre (ASTeC) at the STFC Daresbury Laboratory to develop the Transverse Energy Spread Spectrometer to make these crucial measurements. This paper takes the post-assembly imbalance of a multi-stage rotor of a high-pressure compressor as the objective function, to reduce the post-assembly imbalance by adjusting the arrangement order of rotor blades and the assembly phase between rotors. We used a four-sector staggered distribution method to generate high-quality initial populations and added an elite retention strategy. The crossover and mutation probabilities are adaptively adjusted according to the fitness function values. The threshold termination condition is added to make the algorithm converge quickly so as to achieve fast, stable, and efficient search. The simulation results show that the imbalance is reduced by 99.46% by using the improved genetic algorithm, which is better than the traditional GA.
