The intention of nurses to leave (ITL) the profession or the ward where they work has been documented over the past 30 years but exacerbated after the Covid pandemic. The results of the numerous studies on ITL are difficult to compare because they often not distinguish whether one wants to leave the hospital, the ward or the profession. With few exceptions, it is not easy to trace the identikit of nurses who are most likely to leave the profession and, above all, it is not known how many nurses who express the intention to leave actually will leave. Repeated cross-sectional studies are needed to monitor the phenomenon together with longitudinal and mixed methods studies to better analyse the motivations and implement preventive strategies to improve retention.
","PeriodicalId":516320,"journal":{"name":"Assistenza infermieristica e ricerca : AIR","volume":"44 2","pages":"77-85"},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2025-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144228254","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Complexity of food and implications for treatments. There is growing evidence highlighting the importance of dietary quality in disease prevention, particularly in the context of a global surge in early-onset cancers. Food chemicals can regulate the activity of human and microbial proteins; however, our knowledge of these substances and their sites of action is very limited, as is our understanding of the vast array of chemicals with health implications. There are more than 139,000 molecules in food, that are termed 'nutrition dark matter' (NDM), and which have immense, largely untapped therapeutic potential. Around 2,000 food molecules are already used as drugs, highlighting the pharmaceutical relevance of food chemicals. Social stigma in dementia: Italian validation of the Dementia Public Stigma Scale (DEPSS).

Introduction: Dementia-related stigma is a significant barrier to supporting people with dementia and promoting their social inclusion. The Dementia Public Stigma Scale (DePSS) measures all the dimensions of dementia-related public stigma: fear and discomfort, inability and loss, personality recognition, burden and exclusion.

Aim: To validate the DePSS in Italian and measure dementia-related public stigma.

Method: The DePSS has 16 items rated on a Likert scale 1-7 (1=strongly disagree; 7=strongly agree). The average score for the overall scale and for each of its five factors ranges from 1 to 7, higher scores indicate higher stigma. The original English tool was translated and culturally adapted and psychometric validation was performed. The scale was then tested on 1,329 people (aged 14-93 years).

Results: The Italian version of the DePSS confirmed the original five-factor structure and was a clear, valid and reliable tool for measuring dementia-related stigma. The median overall score was 3.6 (IQR 3.1-4.0) that indicates moderate stigma. The highest levels of stigma emerged in the factor inability and loss (median 4.8, IQR 4.2-5.4) and burden (median 4.0, IQR 2.5-5.0). Are pressure sores a sensitive outcome for nursing care? The article debates the issue analysing the concept of avoidable pressure sore, discussing the interpretation of incidence and prevalence data. In order to consider pressure sores as a nursing care-sensitive outcome, it is necessary to distinguish the type of injury (due to positioning, devices…) and above all the care received, and to consider the concept of avoidability in the interpretation of data. If the nurses have been enabled to (and this depends also on the sufficient number of staff), and did not activate the due care interventions, the occurrence of a pressure sore can be considered a care-sensitive outcome.
