This has increased the media attention they receive. These parties share eurosceptic positions or question the idea of European integration, but does their rise alter public discussion on the European Union? Using a quantitative content analysis (N=974) conducted in 6 media outlets: El País and El Mundo (Spain), Le Monde and Le Figaro (France), and Corriere della Sera and La Repubblica (Italy), the research describes and compares media coverage on issues related to the European Union before and after the Great Recession and how the rise of the far-right has affected the European public sphere. The results indicate that public discussion about the European Union is in decline and that national and top-down Europeanisation approaches are on the rise, coinciding with increased coverage of the far-right.\u0000 ","PeriodicalId":516207,"journal":{"name":"Doxa Comunicación. Using our own methodology based on a survey of almost 60 professionals, four key aspects of their professional structure are analysed exhaustively: main functions, institutional location, evolution of the human resources available to them, and the professional recognition given to them. After contextualising the origin, evolution, and current map of the UCC+i, the results indicate that these units specialise mainly in the communication of results and the dissemination of science. And, to a lesser extent, they perform advisory and training functions. At the institutional level, they are placed under the supervision of the communication and research areas. Regarding staffing, the most common structure is that of three professionals, but with little expectation of expansion and limited recognition by the universities themselves. In short, their high professional visibility is identified as their main strong point, and the lack of economic resources as a serious problem for their development.","PeriodicalId":516207,"journal":{"name":"Doxa Comunicación. A mixed approach involving content and discourse analysis has been used, in which a total of 19 advertisements were selected and decoded based on their metadata, explicit content or formal features, framing, and advertising objectives. More than half of the spots use fear as a persuasive factor, and concern is instilled by incorporating common features of aesthetics and symbolism in terms of form, content, and expressive resources. This study clearly demonstrates that due to the absence of other frameworks, fear was used as the preferred emotion for engaging in political persuasion during the pandemic, and that a climate of fear was created by using combined features aimed at spreading thanatophobia, or the fear of disease.","PeriodicalId":516207,"journal":{"name":"Doxa Comunicación. To this end, we analyse the film Stranger on the Third floor (1940, Boris Ingster), a low budget feature (a so-called B-movie) produced by RKO. This film should be considered the first full-blown example of the US film noir genre and in it, the press and the carácter of the journalist are key to understanding its plot, internal narrative, and even the structure of the film. Here, we propose a three-fold análisis encompassing the historical context, plot, and form of the film to examine how Boris Ingster and the RKO cinematic production team succeeded in making Stanger on the Third Floor into a stylistic model for US film noire in which journalism plays a key role.","PeriodicalId":516207,"journal":{"name":"Doxa Comunicación. However, academic approaches to the two series have focused on aspects related to theme, narrative, and reception, which generally receive more attention in the field of television studies than other equally relevant viewpoints. This paper aims to fill the existing gap with regard to formal approaches by proposing a textual and comparative analysis of the stylistic keys of both series in their approach to journalistic activity. One of the main findings is that although both series are very realistic, The Wire focusses on a formal system built upon the strategies of staging, planning, editing and sound space, with a tendency to descriptively display the facts, while The Newsroom uses an expressiveness that idealises the way the profession is carried out with a sentimental emphasis.","PeriodicalId":516207,"journal":{"name":"Doxa Comunicación. A target of criticism and the result of technological adaptations, it is used by the film industry to create characters who use journalistic skills, verify sources or create exclusives, to therefore promote a democratic society with truth and independence, as part of their plots. To do this, a quantitative and qualitative content analysis is carried out on six representative American comedies in the last half century - Network (Sidney Lumet, 1976), Broadcast News (James L. Brooks, 1987), The Paper (Ron Howard, 1994), Chicago (Rob Marshall, 2002), Morning Glory (Roger Michell, 2010), and Don't Look Up (Adam McKay, 2021)- based on humor theories and agenda setting theory. By using humorous resources and journalistic praxis, an overview is made of how journalism is portrayed on the big screen through satire, which results in an image rooted in frivolous stereotypes, jokes and sharp responses denouncing sensationalism and infotainment. It is a debate that makes viewers aware of the importance of journalism and that, though laughter, a critical vision fluctuates by satirizing their skills under the deconstructive capacity of humor that reflects American society.\u0000 ","PeriodicalId":516207,"journal":{"name":"Doxa Comunicación. In the collective imagination, journalists are positioned as the fourth estate and bear a social responsibility. In the early days of cinema until around the 1990s, women occupied secondary roles compared to their male counterparts, through stereotypical characters portrayed as cold, unyielding, ambitious professionals ready to do whatever it took to get the news at the expense of their personal lives. They are depicted as masculinised and sexualised. Using a methodological triangulation that applies descriptive analysis techniques, film analysis and in-depth interviews, the feature film The Realm, by Rodrigo Sorogoyen is studied to determine how the figure of the female journalist is represented in it. After studying the results, it can be concluded that present-day female journalists do not find an accurate representation of their profession in The Realm or cinema in general. This discrepancy stems from the persistent perpetuation of certain stereotypes that influence how women journalists' role is portrayed on the big screen.","PeriodicalId":516207,"journal":{"name":"Doxa Comunicación. However, as changes to their visual appearance can lead to scanning failures, an understanding of the technical requirements and limitations of this technology is essential in order to develop a viable creative strategy. To this end, a semi-systematic review of the literature was carried out for the purpose of gathering information on possible strategies for enhancing QR codes without compromising their functionality, and to provide guidelines for manually customising these codes in a way that is effective. The aim of this paper is to reveal the amount of research that has focused on the relationship between the aesthetic characteristics of QR codes and their advertising effectiveness. The main findings include a scarcity of scientific analysis regarding this issue, yet multiple opportunities for the artistic modification of QR codes due to recent advances in generative artificial intelligence.","PeriodicalId":516207,"journal":{"name":"Doxa Comunicación. In Nací en una rotativa. Las empresas culturales de José Ortega y Gasset, Professor Blanco narrates the trajectory of an entrepreneur during the stage he himself termed “first navigation”. In Los límites del decir. Razón histórica y lenguaje en el último Ortega, Esmeralda Balaguer deals with the “second navigation”. The philosopher abandons journalism to dedicate himself to concretizing his thought in philosophical publications. From the comparison of both works, there doesn’t emerge a contradiction between a journalist writer and a philosophical writer, but rather a complementarity that explains how in the writer both incentives merge, separated by a change of course forced by a new circumstance opposed to the previous one. They converge to offer a unified vision of his personality and his work. In his first navigation, the writer resorts to the journalistic profession to enhance a program of activities to modernize Spanish society. In the second, when the press and cultural initiatives cease to be an effective channel to influence a collective life project that has foundered, he fully commits to his philosophical task.","PeriodicalId":516207,"journal":{"name":"Doxa Comunicación. Darley or H. Jenkins. In this context, A. Cameron defines modular narratives as those in which classical narrative causality is replaced by a database aesthetic, dividing the narrative into discrete elements subject to manipulations of order, frequency, and duration. Focusing on the case of Open Windows (Nacho Vigalondo, 2014), this study aims to explore the imprints of digital visual culture on contemporary Spanish cinema incorporating modular narratives. The methodology employs an analysis model adapted to this narrative and aesthetic specificity within the framework of Computational Media Aesthetics. The film's mechanisms of representation are scrutinized through a multi-screen interface, where simultaneous events are juxtaposed within the same visual field. Finally, the discussion encompasses the necessity of applying such models to the analysis of audiovisual content associated with digital visual culture, as well as their potential utility for future research.","PeriodicalId":516207,"journal":{"name":"Doxa Comunicación.
