These changes include a shortage of work age employees, changes in family structure, increased women in the labor pool, changes in societal values, and so on. As a result, hospitality organizations are faced with new challenges and can respond to these changes through effective human resource management. This article discusses the current trend toward increasing human resource management practices (benefits and services) that affect employees' nonwork lives. Specifically, this article provides some of the historical context of organizations that have influenced employees' off-the-job lives. It explores why employer involvement in employee nonwork lives has become an important issue, and presents current research on the study of employer influence through human resource management practices, in employee nonwork lives. It addresses the importance of this issue for hospitality, and recommends future research.","PeriodicalId":51527,"journal":{"name":"MARRIAGE AND FAMILY REVIEW","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"1998-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J002V28N01_08","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66464360","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A random sample of 333 (33.0%) of the population, members of the American Dietetic Association's Management in Health Care Systems dietetic practice group, was surveyed. Work aspects with the most negative impact on quality of home life were number of hours worked per week, work schedule and job security. The employee attribute found to play a statistically significant role in predicting overall effect of job on home life was number of hours worked per week.","PeriodicalId":51527,"journal":{"name":"MARRIAGE AND FAMILY REVIEW","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"1998-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J002V28N01_10","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66464477","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The data provide compelling support for the presence of an occupational subculture whose norms promote drinking. No support was found for the work stress perspective of alcohol consumption; however, significant negative correlations between each of three measures of strain and alcohol consumption indicate that alcohol may serve as a buffer between work stressors and strains. Implications and future research needs are discussed.","PeriodicalId":51527,"journal":{"name":"MARRIAGE AND FAMILY REVIEW","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"1998-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J002V28N01_11","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66464534","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The literature of theology, myth, and folklore is juxtaposed with the literature of family systems, organizational studies, and service management to explore the multifaceted meaning of the term hospitality practice. The related origins of such words as guest, host, and stranger are presented to create a model of possibility capable of imagining how the ancient image of the proverbial stranger at the door remains an apt metaphorical model for hospitality practice to be enacted on both private as well as public levels of social interaction. The interconnectedness derived from such meanings, drawn between older forms of hospitality practice and its contemporary reincarnation in a formalized industry niche, called Hospitality, are intended to articulate how service quality is an attribute that the industry owes as much to its employees as to its customers.","PeriodicalId":51527,"journal":{"name":"MARRIAGE AND FAMILY REVIEW","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"1998-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J002v28n01_01","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66464047","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this study was to investigate hotel/motel products and services valued most by older consumers-a substantial and growing market segment with special concerns. The sample for this study consisted of consumers age 55 and older in the state of Texas. Results indicate value and security were considered highly important, and suggest lodging operators should concentrate their efforts on providing and marketing value and security features in order to attract and satisfy older consumers.","PeriodicalId":51527,"journal":{"name":"MARRIAGE AND FAMILY REVIEW","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"1998-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J002V28N01_13","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66464330","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

American food habits remained predominantly European until the middle of the 20th century, and became distinctly American by late 20th century. This study indicates that the relationship between the culture and the food habits is bi-directional. Analysis of changes in the family structure, and their impact on food habits in the Western civilization from the period of the Roman and Greek empires through the 20th century are included. Contrary to the earlier beliefs, food habits of individuals were found to be more permanent and stable than their socioeconomic, cultural, religious, educational, and ethnic preferences. American food habits of the 20th century are influenced by its cultural sub-groups. Food habits include not only food consumption habits but also the food procurement, production, preparation, and preservation practices. The food habits are often passed on from one generation to another like sacred texts and family ...","PeriodicalId":51527,"journal":{"name":"MARRIAGE AND FAMILY REVIEW","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"1998-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J002V28N01_02","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66463614","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
