The definition of family in this paper is inclusive of all forms of nuclear and extended family and kinship networks. An extensive bibliography was developed as a basis for this review of the multiple disciplinary research on family in Israel. An examination of the development of family sociology in Israel suggests a marginalization of the field of research. Zionist ideology does not place the family in a prominent role in social change. Instead, the family is seen as passive recipient of change as it occurs in the larger society. Only in positions concerning the need to absorb immigrants or to blend exiles can the role of the family in shaping society be seen. The exotic or problematic families have been the subjects of family research in Israel, leaving the average Israeli family largely unstud- ied.","PeriodicalId":51527,"journal":{"name":"MARRIAGE AND FAMILY REVIEW","volume":"23 1","pages":"377-416"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"1996-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J002V23N01_02","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66460279","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By 1952 the focus of attention in sociology was already shifting to the problems of modern society. There appeared hardly any texts during the 1950s that seriously challenged the traditional family institution. Family research invested virtually all its energies in studying the housewife and assuring people that family was alive and well. The entire field of sociological research saw some significant changes in the late 1970s. A new category-way-of-life-took the social sciences and sociology by storm. The arrival of this concept provides one example of the growing influence of Marxist research during the 1970s. Indeed, changes in the definition of family have been at the heart of the diversity and fluidity characteristic of the study of family. Studies of economic issues, gender and class distinctions, and family processes have involved vari- ous perspectives in research and theory building. Future directions for research suggest the need to explore linkages between British scholars and the wider community of family scholars, topics related to family morality or obligation, further development of qualitative and quantitative methods in family research, and continued exchanges between scholars and policy makers.","PeriodicalId":51527,"journal":{"name":"MARRIAGE AND FAMILY REVIEW","volume":"23 1","pages":"457-486"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"1996-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J002V23N01_05","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66460516","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is only during the last two decades that research groups at the socio- logical institutes of the Universities of Zurich and Geneva special- ized in this field. Research was first of all stimulated by the dramatic socio-demographic changes that occurred in the late 1960s which called for sociological explanations, and secondly by the contradic- tions between these changes and the strong normative traditionalism peculiar to Switzerland. Nevertheless family research in Switzerland is still relatively marginal, compared to other topics of social sciences. A scientific center continuously dealing with family issues is still lacking. Swiss family researchers will therefore continue to integrate themselves into the broader framework of European family research.","PeriodicalId":51527,"journal":{"name":"MARRIAGE AND FAMILY REVIEW","volume":"77 1","pages":"599-626"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"1996-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J002V23N01_10","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66460966","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Lazarsfeld during the early 1930s. Spurred by urgent post-war problems, Leo- pold Rosenmayr reintroduced empirical social research in his hous- ing studies during the decades between 1950 and 1970. Rosenmayrs concept of intimacy at the distance has been influential in the study of intergenerational relationships in social as well as ecologi- cal contexts. In the 1980s, the attention of social researchers turned to the definition of family. The dominant topic at the macro-level has been deinstitutionalization of the family, while the micro-level focus has been on superindividualization. This review of the devel- opment of family research and theory in Austria traces recent trendstoward individualism for their influence on family roles, intergenera- tional relationships, and public policy regarding family caregiving.","PeriodicalId":51527,"journal":{"name":"MARRIAGE AND FAMILY REVIEW","volume":"1 1","pages":"433-456"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"1996-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J002V23N01_04","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66460398","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
