The lessons learned in the process of hermeneutic interpretive research changed the way I investigate nearly everything. The power of positivism was deeply embedded in my beliefs about what real research looks like, my thinking about why and how research is done, and my language about how research is expressed and communicated to others. Because hermeneutic study seeks to make meaning of words and narrative and to gain understanding, it is a powerful tool to study intact texts. This article poses questions that may be helpful to novice and veteran researchers undertaking interpretive research.","PeriodicalId":51527,"journal":{"name":"MARRIAGE AND FAMILY REVIEW","volume":"24 1","pages":"223-239"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"1997-02-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J002V24N03_01","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66461678","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study described in this paper uses a qualitative research design to address the ecology of service use in the family within the broader social and physical environment. While the focus of this paper relates to the methodology of the study, some substantive results are used for illustrative purposes. Through an in-depth study of families in the contexts of their neighborhoods, our task is to search for patterns and their meanings. This process may uncover the motives and beliefs underlying service use and access among the families in our study.","PeriodicalId":51527,"journal":{"name":"MARRIAGE AND FAMILY REVIEW","volume":"36 1","pages":"297-321"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"1997-02-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J002V24N03_04","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66461921","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The article (a) presents a theory of how fathers change and the implications of this theory for the use of fathers narrative accounts in interpretive family life education, (b) briefly discusses the concept of generative fathering and presents a conceptual framework for understanding and encouraging generative fathering, and (c) illustrates the potential utility of narrative accounts in encouraging generative fathering in family life education with accounts collected from fathers. Although the method applied herein is not, in the strictest sense, qualitative research, it illustrates how qualitative methodology can be applied to family life education.","PeriodicalId":51527,"journal":{"name":"MARRIAGE AND FAMILY REVIEW","volume":"24 1","pages":"349-368"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"1997-02-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J002V24N03_07","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66461835","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Drawing upon Family Worlds, a seminal work in whole-family methodology, this essay shows by example and analysis the capacity of this approach to deepen and broaden understandings of diverse family experiences. A set of intellectual and cultural condi- tions at the end of the 19th century suggested that there would be a rapid growth of this area of specialisation. Nevertheless, the disci- pline did not become institutionalised despite the efforts of Adolfo Posada, who had taken the initiative to formalise its status. Other factors which should have encouraged developments in this field such as the debate on the role of women in society, the survey of the Ateneo de Madrid of 1901 or the profound legal changes introduced by the Second Republic in fact made little impact. Although the emergence of empirical sociology at the end of the 1960s is related to the study of the Spanish family, it is in other fields of sociology where advances were more marked. With the death of Franco in 1975 and the legislative and social changes which followed, the sociology of the family acquired greater vigour, although many gaps remain to be covered by r...","PeriodicalId":51527,"journal":{"name":"MARRIAGE AND FAMILY REVIEW","volume":"23 1","pages":"575-598"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"1996-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J002V23N01_09","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66460905","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Researchers were in this period no doubt often inspired by American scientists who visited the country and taught how to do quantitative empirical studies. However, family-related research was also present before this through the pioneering work by Eilert Sundt. Sundt was engaged in policy-oriented studies on poverty among unwed mothers and their children in the 1850s as well as in descriptive demographic studies. Broadly speaking the two trends that were initiated by Eilert Sundt are identified as characteristic of family research also in our times: one which is rather descriptive and broad-scale oriented and one based on qualitative data-often discussed in a critical context. To some extent these differences in orientation reflect the position of the researcher. Descriptive studies are mainly initiated by applied research institutions while the more independent position of university researchers seems to encourage work ...","PeriodicalId":51527,"journal":{"name":"MARRIAGE AND FAMILY REVIEW","volume":"70 1","pages":"681-721"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"1996-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J002V23N03_03","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66461525","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although divorce is constitutionally prohibited in Ireland, separations and non-marital births are indicators of family structural change in Ireland as in the rest of Europe. The need now is to link these policy-driven investigations as well as future research into coherent theoretical analyses and to launch interdisciplinary collaborations.","PeriodicalId":51527,"journal":{"name":"MARRIAGE AND FAMILY REVIEW","volume":"95 1","pages":"517-533"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"1996-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J002V23N01_07","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66460614","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
