It first sketches the principle and the evidence adduced in favour of it. The first major problem with the principle is that it is based merely on evidence about beliefs regarding the legitimacy of using violence and evidence about the actual use of violence. The second major problem is that the evidence adduced in support of the explanatory split principle is confined to the cognitive and behavioural radicalization of individuals. However, it is widely acknowledged that groups and social entities, like institutions, ministries, and governments, can equally well radicalize—cognitively or behaviorally, or both. The article hypothesizes that the correlation may well be stronger in the case of groups and social entities, in fact even when narrowly understood as a correlation between beliefs about violence and the actual use of violence. Drawing on social epistemology, group psychology, and ethics, several reasons are given for why this may be. Subsequently, various objections are discussed and what they mean for the alternative understanding of the relation between cognitive and behavioral radicalization defended here. Finally, it is explored what giving up on a general explanatory split principle and construing a more nuanced and fine-grained version of it would mean for how we study cognitive and behavioural radicalization. The instrument of data collection was an online questionnaire which produced a rich dataset comprising both quantitative and qualitative data. This study investigates the extent to which the United Kingdom’s (U.K.) public associates Far-Right violence with terrorism and whether media consumption, trustworthiness of media reporting of FRE incidents and social identity—age, gender and ethnicity—influence whether individuals attribute a terrorist label to FRE case studies. Statistical analyses revealed a significant relationship between Social Media and TV News Programmes consumption and the trustworthiness of TV News, Tabloid and Broadsheet Newspapers reporting on the labelling of several FRE incidents as terroristic or not. Statistical analysis also revealed that respondents’ age and gender significantly influenced whether three of the four case studies were classified as acts of terrorism, whereas ethnicity had no impact. Scholars have diverged in their conclusions regarding the impact of radical flank actions on more moderate organizations, a phenomenon known as the Radical Flank Effect (RFE). Some argue that radical elements within a movement can inadvertently boost the credibility and support for moderate groups by offering a contrast. Others believe that violence can tarnish the movement’s overall image as extremist, negatively impacting moderates. I propose that these varying conclusions stem partly from a lack of focus on the agency of moderate organizations in managing the extent to which radical factions harm their core interests. Examining the emergence of radical flank violence in the Quebec pro-independence movement during the 1960s and 1970s, this study investigates how and when moderates might enhance their distinction from radical elements and avoid detrimental associations. One key decision includes what targets should be attacked and how often. While previous research has identified various factors influencing target selection, little attention has been given to how individual-level characteristics shape terrorist leaders' tactical choices. This study examines how a leader's tenure and role in founding a group affect the nature and balance of targets attacked in group operations. Using a global sample of 120 terrorist leaders across 77 groups, longitudinal multi-level models reveal that as a leader's tenure increases, so does their group's attack frequency on both soft and hard targets. Contrary to expectations, groups led by more experienced leaders devote a greater proportion of their attacks to soft targets. Additionally, groups led by founding leaders attack hard targets at significantly lower rates than those led by non-founders. Nevertheless, when analyzing their modus operandi, the attention has focused on violent and illegal tactics, to the detriment of non-violent and legal tactics. In light of this, and inspired by the literature on hybrid threats, this paper introduces the Coercion-Manipulation-Persuasion framework (CMPf) to holistically analyze the modus operandi of such actors, conceptually labelled as Systems of Non-State Actors (SNSAs). The CMPf is an analytical framework that combines influence modes (i.e., coercion, manipulation, and persuasion) with different categories (i.e., physical/material, symbolic, institutional, and strategic) to hypothesize over the tactics that could be used by SNSAs, thus facilitating analyses and assessments on their activities and providing anticipation and understanding. To exemplify this, three cases are non-exhaustively analyzed through the CMPf: the Nordic Resistance Movement, the Muslim Brotherhood, and Euskadi Ta Askatasuna.
