Cannulated cancellous caps made of 316 L stainless steel with dimensions of 10 mm × 25 mm (length) cap for 4 mm, 4.5 mm and 5 mm steinmann pin and 8 mm × 25 mm (length) cap for 2.5 mm and 3 mm steinmann pin were designed. A total of 14 cases of dogs presented with simple transverse, short oblique fractures of long bones were equally divided into groups A and B having 7 animals in each. Simple intramedullary pinning was done in group A, whereas, in group B designed caps were fixed at entry point at trochanteric fossa after intramedullary pinning to prevent proximal migration of pins. Posture, gait, perception of pain and lameness scores were assessed during 15, 30 and 60 day, postoperatively. Caps offered rigid fixation along with intramedullary pin resulting in mild or moderate callus formation. Excellent postoperative functional recovery without any pin migration, seroma formation and valgus limb deformity were observed in group B. Results of present preliminary study suggested that designed capped intramedullary pinning offers stable internal fixation and prevented pin migration, sciatic injury and seroma formation.","PeriodicalId":512390,"journal":{"name":"The Indian Journal of Animal Sciences","volume":"2 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140254110","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Twelve distal parts of the forelimbs cadavers of freshly slaughtered adult dromedary camels were used in this study. Six manus cadavers were used for anatomical morphology and the other six were used for ultrasonographic examination of the manus nerves. The gross anatomical study revealed the manus of the camel including, the third and fourth metacarpus and digits receives nerve supply from the ulnar, radial, and median nerves. These nerves continued along the camel manus as lateral and medial palmar metacarpal nerves and the axial and abaxial palmar proper digital nerves of the digits III and IV. Ultrasonographic evaluation of each nerve in the manus of the dromedary camel revealed proper localization and tracking of these nerves from the surrounding structures. In conclusion, the present study provides anatomical and ultrasonographic imaging knowledge tracking of the manus nerves in camels. This is important for determining the areas of the nerve block to attain successful regional anesthesia of this region in case of manus injuries in camel.","PeriodicalId":512390,"journal":{"name":"The Indian Journal of Animal Sciences","volume":"71 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140251710","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A study was carried out to evaluate the peripheral AMH concentration in high and low fertile crossbred cows. Vrindavani crossbred cows (n=60) at the institutional dairy farm were used for the study. The age-specific decline in AMH concentration was evident, with the highest concentration at 4-6 years (134.8±17.74 pg/mL) corresponding to second to third parity. Retrospective assessment of fertility using 217 lactation records in crossbred cows revealed that circulatory AMH was higher by 69 pg/mL in the high fertile cows than those of low fertile cows. It was concluded that the serum AMH concentration was influenced by age and parity. Further, serum AMH concentrations were found to be higher in the group of cows that had superior fertility records in comparison to the group with low-performing animals.","PeriodicalId":512390,"journal":{"name":"The Indian Journal of Animal Sciences","volume":"40 3‐4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140252426","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The addition level was low (D1) at 0.25 g/L, medium (D2) at 0.5 g/L, and high (D3) at 1.0 g/L of fermentation medium. Concentrate mixture and bengal gram straw (Cicer arietinum L.) in 40:60 ratio was incubated with incubation medium containing goat rumen liquor for 24 h at 39°C in glass syringes. Three goats fed with concentrate pellet and Bengal gram straw served as donor of the rumen liquor. In vitro fluid pH varied between 6.50 to 6.59. Total gas production (mL/g DM) in control group was 154.07, at lower dose level (0.25 g/L) there was increase in gas production which significantly decreased at highest dose level. There was significant (P<0.05) decrease in the methane production (mL/g DM and mL/g DDM) on GO and PO supplementation together. At low dose level (D1, 0.25g/L) there was no statistically (P>0.05) significant difference in in vitro dry matter and organic matter digestibility with the addition of different EO combinations evaluated as compared to control except PO+ CLO (1:1). At dose level (D2 and D3) GO+PO combination led to a moderate decrease in the in IVDMD and IVOMD along with decrease in in vitro methane production. Fraction of propionic acid was higher on addition of garlic and peppermint oil together. There was relative decrease in the methanogens population with bacteria as housekeeping gene as expressed by RT-PCR amplification with GO+PO addition. Present study concluded that among the EOs combinations in vitro tested, garlic and peppermint oil combination (GO+PO) has better potential in reducing in vitro methane production with lower effect on in vitro digestibility.","PeriodicalId":512390,"journal":{"name":"The Indian Journal of Animal Sciences","volume":"12 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140252835","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ninety six commercial Vencobb broiler chicks of one week of age were segregated into four groups with three replicates having eight chicks per replicate, viz. TA (asbestos roof as control), TAG (asbestos roof with gunny bags screen), TH (modified asbestos with thatched roof), and THG (modified asbestos with thatched roof with gunny bags as the screen). The overall maximum temperature of the asbestos group’s experimental sheds throughout the trial period was substantially greater than that of the thatch group. Significantly, the highest THI was seen in the TAG shed. The cumulative body weight gain was significantly highest in TH shed. The cumulative FCR and performance indices of the thatched group were found to be significantly better than the asbestos group. The net profit/bird and net profit/kg were better in the TH group. According to behavioural studies, the panting rate rose with age in weeks but was much lower in the thatched group. Serum corticosterone levels were considerably lower in the TH and THG groups than in the asbestos roof groups. In hot and humid locations, modified asbestos with a thatched roof may be suitable for commercial broiler poultry.","PeriodicalId":512390,"journal":{"name":"The Indian Journal of Animal Sciences","volume":"18 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140253146","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Group 1 cows were fed a mineral mixture, and group 2 and 3 were medicated with Pulsatilla and Sepia drenched at the dose rate of 20 mL twice daily for 8 days, respectively. The mean plasma progesterone level (ng/mL) estimated using a radio immunoassay kit was significantly higher in group 2, followed by group 3 before and after medication on day 28 and 60, post artificial insemination (AI). Out of 12 induced for oestrus, 10 cows (83.33 %) and 9 cows (75.0 %) in group 2 and 3 were confirmed pregnant by rectal palpation on day 60 post AI, respectively. Both the homeopathic medicines showed 100% oestrus induction with a mean interval of 25.17 to 25.50 days, and Pulsatilla medicated cows showed improved fertility response than Sepia. The significantly higher level of progesterone after the withdrawal of homeopathic medication might be due to the release of circulating hormone, which blocks estradiol negative feedback. The subsequent increase reduces uterine PGF2 alpha secretion for a better conception rate.","PeriodicalId":512390,"journal":{"name":"The Indian Journal of Animal Sciences","volume":"124 37","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139785033","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fifteen male non-descript goat kids of 6-8 months of age were divided equally into three groups (T0, T1 and T2). T0 group was fed with basal diet and T1 and T2 group were fed with 20 and 30% CLM in concentrate mixture for 120 days. The Hb, PCV, DLC, TLC, albumin, globulin, total protein, A:G ratio, Ca, P, Urea N and glucose levels were comparable among all groups of goat kids. However, total cholesterol was significantly lower in T1 and T2 group. The enzymatic profile including ALT, AST and ASP levels were comparable among all groups of kids. The serum antioxidants such as glutathione peroxidase and catalase were significantly higher in T2 group as compared to T1 and control group without affecting superoxide dismutase level. The thyroid hormones were non-significant among all groups of kids. The humoral and cell mediated immunity was improved in CLM fed group of kids. The carcass characteristics and meat composition were comparable among all groups of kids while TBAR value was lower in T2 group. Therefore, it may be concluded from the study that 20-30% CLM in concentrate mixture reduces the total cholesterol level, increases serum catalase and glutathione peroxidase level and improved keeping quality of meat, cell mediated and humoral immunity status of growing goat kids.","PeriodicalId":512390,"journal":{"name":"The Indian Journal of Animal Sciences","volume":"5 20","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139783248","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this study was to identify genetic variants of bovine-Growth Hormone (bGH), Growth Hormone Receptor (GHR) and Insulin like Growth Factor1 (IGF1) gene and their association with lactation persistency in Tharparkar cattle. Study was carried out using data of daily milk yield, monthly test days, total milk yield and peak yield of 372 lactation records of 190 Tharparkar cattle maintained at Livestock Research Centre of ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute from 1996-2019. Lactation persistency was estimated using Woods and Wilminks method and its least squares means were 2.37±0.08 and -5.4±0.56, respectively. Investigations on polymorphism were performed using seven reported primers for amplifying targeted regions of bGH, GHR and IGF1 gene. In PCR-RFLP, bGH-MspI RFLP had shown polymorphism in intron 3 and its genotypic frequencies were TT 0.49, CT 0.39 and CC 0.12. The allelic frequency of C and T were 0.31 and 0.69, respectively. The bGH-AluI RFLP had shown monomorphism in exon 5. GHR-AluI had shown polymorphism in exon 10 with only two genotypes AA and AG with frequency of 0.92 and 0.08, respectively. The frequency of A and G allele was 0.96 and 0.04, respectively. In GHR-StuI and IGF1-TasI in promoter region, RsaI in exon 3 and SnaB I in exon 1 had shown monomorphism. No significant association was found between genetic variants of bGH and GHR with lactation persistency in Tharparkar cattle.","PeriodicalId":512390,"journal":{"name":"The Indian Journal of Animal Sciences","volume":"122 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139842882","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among several sectors, dairy sector is the most affected as dairy products are highly perishable and rely on time-sensitive supply chains. Though studies are available on the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on dairy sector, there are no studies on COVID-infected dairy farm households. The present study was an attempt to assess the socio-economic impact of COVID-19 pandemic on infected and uninfected dairy farm households in West Bengal. The study covered pre-lockdown, lockdown (both 1st and 2nd wave) and post-lockdown phases of COVID-19 pandemic. The primary data was collected from 150 dairy farm households (COVID-19 infected-75 and uninfected-75) in Murshidabad and Nadia districts of West Bengal. Dairy Economic Performance Index consisting of number of milch animals, milk yield, marketed milk, milk procurement price, concentrate price and veterinary cost was developed using principal component analysis. In order to make infected and uninfected groups statistically comparable, propensity score matching technique was employed. The index values were compared between matched infected and uninfected groups over different phases of COVID-19 pandemic. Dairy households incurred significant economic losses during the lockdown and post-lockdown periods due to increase in cost of concentrates, decline in the number of milch animals and drop in milk procurement prices. Dairy households faced constraints in procuring dry fodder, concentrate feed and in accessing veterinary care. COVID-19 infected dairy farm households had a greater socio-economic hurdle than that of uninfected households.","PeriodicalId":512390,"journal":{"name":"The Indian Journal of Animal Sciences","volume":"58 15","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139844646","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study was aimed at assessing the effect of dietary supplementation of vitamin E on the resumption of cyclic ovarian activity in periparturient Murrah buffaloes through plasma progesterone (P4) hormone profiles. The Murrah buffaloes (n=12) were selected during their late gestation based on the expected date of calving that fall between November and February, from ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute livestock herd and were divided randomly into two groups (n=6). Buffaloes of group I were given only the control diet, while group II was supplemented with 2000 IU/day/head vitamin E along with control feed. Blood samples were collected from each buffalo at weekly intervals from day +21 to +56 after calving. Plasma P4 was estimated by direct radioimmunoassay (RIA). The results revealed that plasma P4 levels were statistically non-significant between groups except on day 21. However, the overall P4 profile of each buffalo indicated ovarian activity; from day 28 postpartum in supplemented group and day 42 in the control group. From the experiment, it could be inferred that the dietary supplementation of vitamin E has no effect on the resumption of cyclic ovarian activity/ steroidogenesis.","PeriodicalId":512390,"journal":{"name":"The Indian Journal of Animal Sciences","volume":"8 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139782723","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
