Knowledge of their support needs, the challenges they experience, and how they manage them are useful to inform tailored follow-up care. Thus, we aimed to explore their transition experiences. Method: We interviewed 15 adolescents (12-19 years) who had transitioned off of treatment 1 to 47 months prior at Oslo University Hospital's Department of Paediatric Haematology and Oncology and their biological parents (n = 16). The interviews were analyzed using inductive, reflexive thematic analysis inspired by Braun and Clarke. NVivo-12 was used for data management. Results: Four main themes were identified: (a) consequences of cancer beyond transition, (b) transition back to normalcy, (c) survivorship competence, and (d) changes in roles and relationships. The families described happiness and relief but also said that the lingering effects of cancer treatment had a profound impact on day-to-day living. The adolescents expressed closeness with and dependency on their parents, and they perceived family and friends as essential for social readjustment. Discussion: Although adolescent survivors and their parents described a wide variety of strategies for returning to \"normalcy,\" their perspectives also illustrate ongoing psychosocial and educational support needs that changed over time. Our findings indicate a need for improved preparation for and support through the transition. Nurses are well positioned to provide continuous and structured transition support tailored to the needs of the individual survivors and their families.","PeriodicalId":512163,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nursing","volume":"44 15","pages":"27527530231214528"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140662376","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This affects their health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The purpose of this study was to evaluate how the Supportive and Coping strategies, Ongoing Assessment, Prevention of Complications, and Empowerment (SCOPE) Program impacted the HRQoL and overall health of children with thalassemia. Method: The study employed a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group with a sequential follow-up design. A nonprobability purposive sampling technique was used to include 80 children with beta-thalassemia major in the sample, ranging in age from 6 to 18. Data were gathered using a Demographic Profile, PedsQLTM Version 4.0, and a Clinical Profile. The children in the intervention group received the SCOPE Program over the course of 6 months. The data collection included a pretest and a posttest with four follow-up evaluations. Results: During the pretest, children with thalassemia had a very low HRQoL. However, the final assessment after the intervention showed a significant difference in the mean scores between the two groups in the areas of physical functioning (p = .001), emotional functioning (p = .0001), social functioning (p = .001), and school functioning (p = .001). Growth indicators also demonstrated a notable improvement in the intervention group of children. Discussion: The SCOPE Program may be a thorough and efficient intervention for enhancing the general health of children with thalassemia. It can be used as a cooperative, well-organized, family-focused care strategy. Further study with a larger sample size is suggested.","PeriodicalId":512163,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nursing","volume":"39 6","pages":"27527530231214542"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140677418","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study determined the feasibility of collecting blood and saliva samples across time, described the range and distribution of biomarkers, and explored the association of biomarkers with symptom adverse events (AEs). Method: This longitudinal, prospective repeated-measures single-site feasibility study recruited N  =  10 children (M = 12.5 years) receiving treatment for advanced cancer. Symptom AE data and inflammation (cytokines and C-reactive protein) and physiologic response to stress (salivary cortisol and salivary alpha-amylase) biomarker levels were collected at three time points. Descriptive statistics were used to examine feasibility and acceptability and to summarize symptom AE, stress, and inflammatory biomarker data. A linear regression model was used to determine cortisol diurnal slopes. The relationship between symptom and inflammatory biomarker data was explored and Hedges's g statistic was used to determine its effect size. Results: Participants provided 83% of saliva samples (n  =  199/240) and 185 samples were sufficient to be analyzed. Nurses collected 97% (n  =  29/30) of blood samples. Participants reported the saliva collection instructions, kits, and reminders were clear and helpful. Insomnia, pain, fatigue, and anxiety demonstrated the most medium and large negative effects with inflammatory markers. Symptom AEs demonstrated the highest number of medium and large negative effects with interleukin-8 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (-0.53 to -2.00). Discussion: The results indicate longitudinal concurrent collection of symptom and biomarker data is feasible and inflammatory and stress biomarkers merit consideration for inclusion in future studies.","PeriodicalId":512163,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nursing","volume":"39 10","pages":"27527530231214544"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140728178","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The risk is magnified when experienced in pediatric patients receiving marrow-ablative therapy. A staff nurse on an inpatient pediatric oncology and bone marrow transplant unit noted an increased incidence of skin breakdown around central line dressings in patients receiving Thiotepa prior to bone marrow transplantation. Although there is a wealth of information surrounding routine care of central venous access devices, there is little evidence surrounding care with impaired skin integrity. A staff nurse turned to expert opinion and consensus revealed the use of nonocclusive dressings for central lines. A new protocol for changing central line dressings was developed to decrease the rate of skin breakdown. The protocol utilized gauze and a self-adherent wrap instead of tape to secure central lines. Bone marrow transplant staff nurses were educated prior to the practice change, and compliance was monitored through observation and review of documentation in the electronic medical record. A retrospective chart review compared the rate of skin breakdown and central line associated blood stream infections pre- and postpractice change. The overall percentage of skin breakdown surrounding central lines was reduced by over 80%.</p>","PeriodicalId":512163,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nursing","volume":" ","pages":"396-401"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"40165183","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pediatric oncology nursing is a potentially high-risk subspecialty for PTSD secondary to the nature of the work. This study aimed to describe the prevalence of PTSD symptomology and explore relationships between nurse psychological capital, workplace social supports, and PTSD symptomology in pediatric oncology nurses. <b>Methods:</b> The study utilized a cross-sectional correlational survey design. Pediatric oncology nurses working in direct patient care in the United States completed a demographics questionnaire, Psychological Capital Questionnaire (PCQ), Coworker Support Scale, Supervisor Support Scale, and the Post traumatic Checklist for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (PCL-5). Descriptive and inferential statistics, including logistic regression models, were used to analyze data. A cutoff score of ≥31 on the PCL-5 was used to determine the prevalence of PTSD symptomology. <b>Results:</b> The sample included 424 nurses. The prevalence of PTSD symptomology was 13.4%. Work setting (inpatient), decreased coworker and leadership social support, and psychological capital were independently associated with PTSD symptomology. After controlling for covariates, only psychological capital was associated with PTSD symptomology.
