Several successful approaches have been made to identify the maximal frequent item-sets from a set of typical item-sets. The present work has introduced a novel pruning mechanism which has proved itself to be significant time efficient. The novel technique is based on the Artificial Cell Division (ACD) algorithm which has been found to be highly successful in solving tasks that involve a multi-way search of the search space. The necessity conditions of the ACD process have been modified accordingly to tackle the pruning procedure. The proposed algorithm has been compared with the apriori algorithm implemented in WEKA. Accurate experimental evaluation has been conducted and the experimental results have proved the superiority of AFARTICA over apriori algorithm. The results have also indicated that the proposed algorithm can lead to better performance when the support threshold value is more for the same set of item-sets.","PeriodicalId":51086,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Database Management","volume":"26 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.6,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86975003","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"计算机科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cortex Lycii is an herb from Asia mostly used in traditional Chinese medicine. Although its main purpose is not for lowering blood glucose levels, there are studies on Cortex Lycii with other substances which have proven it can lower glucose level in type 2 diabetes rat. Unlike other experiments, this experiment only used Cortex Lycii as a single unit to see if there was any effect on blood glucose level. Also an observation was done on if Cortex Lycii could reduce blood glucose level after ingesting a high glucose diet. Rattus norvegicus was used in this project and in order for the subject to consume Cortex Lycii, the herb was boiled and the liquid was given for consumption. In order to increase the rats’ glucose levels, corn syrup and white sugar were added to the mixture. The data showed significant decrease of blood glucose when Cortex Lycii liquid was ingested. This research has shown that Cortex Lycii can be a potential treatment for hyperglycemia or diabetes. With further research, there can be an alternative treatment rather than injecting external hormones (Insulin).","PeriodicalId":51086,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Database Management","volume":"8 1","pages":"160-170"},"PeriodicalIF":2.6,"publicationDate":"2018-11-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44842989","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"计算机科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: Using the WHO STEP-wise approach to surveillance of noncommunicable diseases, we estimated the prevalence of diabetes and prediabetes among adults 20 years and older living in two urban slums in Enugu south east Nigeria. Diabetes was defined as previous history of diabetes, use of hypoglycemic agents and fasting blood glucose within the diabetes range on two occasions during the survey period. Study duration was 5 months. Results: Out of the 811 individuals invited to the clinic, 605 (74.6%) participants had their fasting blood glucose measured based on the study protocol. The prevalence of diabetes and prediabetes in the population was 11.7% (95% CI; 9.2 - 14.3) and 7.6% (95% CI; 5.0 - 9.7) respectively. About 54.9% were newly detected and 28.1% of them had normal control. The prevalence of diabetes peaked at 55 - 64 years. The odds ratio for diabetes was significantly higher in participants ≥ 45 years (1.033, 95% CI; 1.208 - 3.420), participants with hypertension (0.442, 95% CI; 0.257 - 0.762) and stroke (1.638, 95% CI; 0.459 - 5.848). Conclusion: There is a relatively high prevalence of diabetes among adults in two urban slums in Enugu. Public health educational measures promoting prevention and early detection of diabetes should be encouraged. Efforts should be made to educate the populace on the need for early detection and treatment.","PeriodicalId":51086,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Database Management","volume":"08 1","pages":"131-144"},"PeriodicalIF":2.6,"publicationDate":"2018-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43625003","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"计算机科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The VD levels are particularly significant in adolescents since it influences several aspects of growth, development, and puberty. During this phase of life, both girls and boys develop reproductive aspects, and secondary sexual characteristics and the adequate nutritional status appear to be the prerequisite for normal pubertal development. Due to the importance of VD in adolescents, the objective of this study was to investigate the association of the levels of this vitamin with glycemic, lipid, and anthropometric profile and sexual maturation stages of adolescents. Anthropometric (weight and height) and biochemical (fasting glycemia, total cholesterol, HDL-c, LDL-c, and triglycerides) data and VD levels were collected in 67 adolescents. 66% of the adolescents showed VD sufficiency, 28% insufficiency, and 6% showed the deficiency. There was a significant difference in VD levels between the stages of sexual maturation for boys and girls. Overweight patients had lower serum VD levels. The correlation analysis indicated a positive correlation between VD and fasting glycemia and HDL-c, but with no significant difference. A negative correlation was observed between VD and cholesterol, LDL-c and triglycerides, but also with no significant difference. Once VD is crucial for bone health, and as it seems it is necessary to the homeostasis of glycemia, lipids, and body weight, we suggest that more studies should be conducted to confirm the precise role of this vitamin in the promotion and maintenance of health in this population.","PeriodicalId":51086,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Database Management","volume":"08 1","pages":"114-124"},"PeriodicalIF":2.6,"publicationDate":"2018-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49059917","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"计算机科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The delay in consultation is one of the main reasons. The objective of this work was to analyze patients’ itinerary care and to identify the causes of delay in consultation in patients admitted for diabetic foot. Method: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study, including all patients hospitalized for diabetic foot. A wait of at least seven (7) days before consulting the Endocrinology department of Hubert Koutoukou Maga Teaching Hospital (CNHU-HKM) after the foot injury occurred was considered as delay in consultation. The data were recorded and analyzed in the EPI INFO software. The description of the sample was made according to the usual statistics (frequency, average, standard deviation). Results: Seventy-six (76) diabetic foot cases were admitted during the period of the study. The mean age of the patients was 56.64 ± 10.71 years with extremes of 29 years and 84 years. Patients were most often received at an advanced stage of the foot injury, 3D stage of Texas classification in 87% of cases and Wagner grades 4 and 5 in 52% of cases. The amputation rate was 38.16%. An analysis of the first care places reveals that 90.8% of patients had consulted conventional medicine, 13.2% in traditional medicine; 1.2% had religious practices and 18.7% had declared self-medication at home. Consultation period at CNHU HKM was more than 7 days in 80% of cases and less than 7 days in 20% of cases. The average consultation time was 44.08 ± 26.43 days with extremes of 1 and 480 days. The main reasons for the delay in seeking hospital care cited by diabetic patients were fear of amputation (47.8% of cases), economic difficulties (32.5% of cases) and awareness lack of the situation seriousness (22.4%). Conclusion: The therapeutic itinerary of patients with diabetic foot was particularly long. The main reasons of late appeal to specialized care were fear of amputation and economic difficulties. The implementation of universal health insurance and an information, education and communication program could certainly reduce the periods allowed for recourse to care and therefore to reduce the amputation rate.","PeriodicalId":51086,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Database Management","volume":"08 1","pages":"125-130"},"PeriodicalIF":2.6,"publicationDate":"2018-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42307320","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"计算机科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In 2015, UNRWA started, in cooperation with Microclinic International (MCI), to implement an innovative diabetes program, aiming at improving awareness about diabetes care among PRs with Diabetes Mellitus (DM). This program takes advantage of a unique model of “microclinic” MCI social network program, a novel social network based on diabetes education intervention. Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted to evaluate the impact of the UNRWA-MCI program in 115 UNRWA’s HCs in Jordan, Lebanon, West Bank and Gaza. 1000 participants were randomly selected from around 60,000 participants in the program. After training 996 nurses on UNRWA-MCI diabetes care modules, groups of 10 - 15 participants with their social networks (around 20 participants in each group) attended eight weekly sessions, during which the program was introduced. Anthropometric and blood pressure (BP) measurements were collected on weekly basis, while glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) was tested before involvement in the program and after completion of sessions with a three month period between both measurements. SPSS Version 22 was used for data analysis. The study protocol was reviewed and cleared by UNRWA, Health Department ethical committee. Results: Out of 1000 patients randomly selected for the evaluation of the impact of the program, 969 (81.9% females, 18.1% males) have completed the study. The average weight loss was 2.0 ± 4.6 Kg and significant improvements were seen in waist circumference (WC), HbA1c and BP (p ≤ 0.001 for all). Overall drop in HbA1c was 0.6 ± 1.2 with 8.5% increase in patients with HbA1c < 7.0 and 9.8% decrease in those with HbA1c ≥ 7.0. About 10.0% of patients with abnormal BP (higher than 140/90 mg/dl based on UNRWA’s criteria for BP of diabetics) had shifted to normal BP. Conclusions and Recommendations: UNRWA-MCI program improved anthropometric measurements, HbA1c and BP in diabetic PRs. It improved diabetes care management for PRs, and led to the involvement of their social networks to support their behavior change for a healthy lifestyle.","PeriodicalId":51086,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Database Management","volume":"8 1","pages":"99-113"},"PeriodicalIF":2.6,"publicationDate":"2018-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45883590","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"计算机科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
