The SETOFF project deals with this need, enhancing the preparedness of the targeted personnel through this particular e-training program. The SETOFF project employs a comprehensive needs analysis, and focuses on the treatment of specific skill gaps so as to create an e-training procedure, transversally designed, and specially oriented to all safety and security personnel involved in natural disaster management. The present study reveals critical aspects of personnel’s skills inadequacies and false assessment of the triggering primary causes. Training expectations usually diverge from the actual needs due to inappropriate/misleading analysis of natural and man-made disasters, inefficient assessment of the evolving dynamics, deficit with respect to training tactics, and limited access to actual disaster management drills. The particular transversal approach pursues that training content is adaptive and comprehensive, effectively dealing with issues of varying conditions which Safety and Security personnel are expected to encounter with success, maintaining at the same time the cohesive framework of the SETOFF Project. The findings of the present study/research are expected to provide valuable guidance for policymakers, researchers, and practitioners, establishing a sustainable and resilient operating frame in natural disaster training for the future.","PeriodicalId":510669,"journal":{"name":"WSEAS TRANSACTIONS ON ENVIRONMENT AND DEVELOPMENT","volume":"46 13","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141800340","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research describes transformational leadership contributing to the sustainable development of local heritage in Medan City and Semarang City. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. Data were obtained by observation, documentation, and interviews. Data analysis techniques were used by reducing data, presenting, and making conclusions. The results showed that transformational leadership contributes to the development of sustainable development of the Kesawan area in Medan City and the Kota Lama area in Semarang City, which is seen based on four characteristics of transformational leadership, namely: idealistic leadership, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration. Medan City has potential as the condition of the building is still very good in the Kesawan area. The obstacles are the legal aspects where many illegal buildings are built and the need for coordination between the government and non-government organizations. In Semarang City, the driving factor is more influenced by the government’s and stakeholders’ readiness and awareness regarding the Kota Lama Area as a cultural heritage. Barriers regarding the level of security and bureaucracy over the massive turnover of members who have the authority to continue the management of the Kota Lama. From the Implementation results, Medan City is still in revitalization and infrastructure development, so the results must be concrete and specific. On the other hand, the Semarang City Government has provided concrete and specific contributions, especially in economic and socio-cultural aspects.","PeriodicalId":510669,"journal":{"name":"WSEAS TRANSACTIONS ON ENVIRONMENT AND DEVELOPMENT","volume":" 111","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141827003","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The transport sector, particularly in developing countries, has a critical role in final energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions reduction strategies. Albanian transport sector ranks first in terms of total energy consumption and consequently in emissions that may increase particularly rapidly, and the costs of future retroactive mitigation activities may be prohibitive if no energy efficiency measures (EEM) are undertaken. The total energy consumption by the end of 2050 is calculated using multiple variable regression methods driven by the GDP growth rate, and population projections, while the combination of energy fluxes by fuel type is based on National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) requirements. In this study two scenarios are developed using an advanced energy system analysis computer model, EnergyPLAN, enabling a smart, sustainable, flexible, diversified, and environmentally friendly Albanian transport sector based on renewable energy sources (RES) and electricity. In this paper the integration of different alternative energy sources and future expected energy sources driven by two basic criteria: the security of supply, with a minimal environmental impact toward 2050 goals by using EnergyPLAN are proposed.","PeriodicalId":510669,"journal":{"name":"WSEAS TRANSACTIONS ON ENVIRONMENT AND DEVELOPMENT","volume":" 31","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141827961","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the effects of global warming caused by humans have become stronger due to higher emissions of gasses that contribute to global warming, carbon dioxide (CO2). These emissions hurt both industrial productivity and the economy. Given the projected population growth and the focus on environmental remediation efforts, it is important to consider the future energy resource requirements for industrial productivity. The question that arises is: what will be the impact of having a clean energy supply on the industry's economy and the environment, even though the industry itself has the potential to greatly contribute to renewable energy production? This study investigates the effect of Saudi Arabia's renewable energy supply, CO2 emissions, and trade openness on the economic growth of the industrial sector, covering the period from 1990 to 2022. The nexus offers valuable insights for policies aimed at promoting renewable energy in the industrial sector by identifying areas of priority. An autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) analysis was used to estimate the nexus. The findings indicated that the growth of the industry sector contributes to environmental degradation, whereas international trade benefits the sector. The industrial economy experienced a slowdown due to the reduced growth of renewable energy supply. In the short-run, an increase of one unit in the industry sector is associated with a decrease of 0.88 in CO2 emissions, while in the long-run an increase of one unit industry sector, is associated with a decrease of 0.55 in CO2 emissions. The study provides new empirical evidence for the links between renewable energy supply and the industrial sector, which can influence policy regarding the use of renewable energy in Saudi Arabia's industrial sector.","PeriodicalId":510669,"journal":{"name":"WSEAS TRANSACTIONS ON ENVIRONMENT AND DEVELOPMENT","volume":" 43","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141826684","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objectives of the study are: (1) to quantify the change in land use/land cover (LULC) patterns and the degree of human disturbance in Serbia between 2000 and 2018, and (2) to study the relationship between LULC configuration and the impact resulting from human disturbance under different levels of intensity, to understand how changing trends in landscape pattern can serve as indicators to estimate landscape changes resulting from human actions. The Hemeroby Index (HI) was calculated to quantify the impacts on ecosystems resulting from disturbance caused by human actions. Based on the analysis of the variation in the value corresponding to the HI for the period between 2000 and 2018, the level of naturalness increased by only 5% of the territory of Serbia, with this change being verified mainly in SE Serbia. The landscape pattern was quantified using a set of LULC metrics. We used the Spearman method to identify the existing statistical correlations between the geometric parameters of the landscape and the HIs values. At the landscape level, the Mean Shape Index, Edge Density, Mean Patch Fractal Dimension, and Shannon Diversity Index show a strong negative correlation with HI. This correlation suggests that landscapes with greater structural complexity are good indicators of low levels of hemeroby. At the class level, Edge Density and Mean Patch Size correlate significantly with the HI for artificial surfaces, agricultural areas, forests, and semi-natural areas.","PeriodicalId":510669,"journal":{"name":"WSEAS TRANSACTIONS ON ENVIRONMENT AND DEVELOPMENT","volume":"25 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140968583","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using a sample of 120 non-financial firms listed on the Saudi Stock Exchange between 2012 and 2022, we examine the determinants of cash holdings. By dividing the sample into two sub-periods: pre-Covid and under Covid and applying the panel data approach, the results show a significant difference between the determinants of cash holdings of the two groups of firms. During the COVID-19 pandemic, cash holding has increased with firm size, cash flow, Cost of Capital, and net working capital, while it has decreased with dividend payment, and return on invested capital. The research provides support for the pecking order theory, indicating that Saudi firms have maintained relatively stable cash management policies and remained unaffected throughout the pandemic. This study sheds light on the supportive role of the Saudi government in assisting firms facing liquidity challenges, offering a comprehensive understanding of the subject. Furthermore, it contributes to the existing literature on corporate finance by exploring new factors that drive cash management decisions.","PeriodicalId":510669,"journal":{"name":"WSEAS TRANSACTIONS ON ENVIRONMENT AND DEVELOPMENT","volume":"37 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140970941","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition, it will benefit some developing countries where environmental protection is not a priority, environmental laws are not well-established, and oversight is not rigorous enough. Objective of research: This paper aims to explore the challenges and opportunities of environmental law enforcement in many countries in the world. Methods: A systematic review was used in this study. Based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses, this study followed the steps of a systematic review of the literature (PRISMA). The final sample of 35 publications was analyzed, considering the year of publication, methods utilized, geographical location, the topic of challenges, and opportunities in enforcing environmental law. Responding to environmental crime is largely the responsibility of government enforcement and regulatory authorities, whether at the national, subnational, or municipal levels. Results and Discussion: The primary reaction agencies in most areas of the world are police, customs and border protection, and environmental regulatory agencies. To assist developing nations in improving environmental legal instruments and supervision; to achieve the ultimate goal of regional and even global environmental law coordination; to train relevant persons, relevant agencies, and other topics in the necessary environmental skills and knowledge; and to transfer and teach environmental knowledge and law within a specified time frame. Conclusion: Although some countries have a thorough legislative structure for environmental protection, local government independence and law enforcement must be improved. The ability of environmental law to serve a purpose is critical in determining whether the measures should be fully implemented.","PeriodicalId":510669,"journal":{"name":"WSEAS TRANSACTIONS ON ENVIRONMENT AND DEVELOPMENT","volume":"23 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140967672","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
