The above-mentioned treatment can be used to harden materials by selecting suitable treatment parameters and chemical composition of the material that initiate a selective diffusion of the alloying elements. In this paper, tests of the T6I6 treatment were carried out on the EN AW-2024 alloy. The aluminium alloy was subject to T6I6 treatment and then the element distribution map was examined within the precipitate using the EDS method, mechanical properties of the precipitate were tested using the nanoindentation method and the kinetics of formation of the precipitate was analysed using DSC. The impact of two-phase precipitates on the mechanical properties has been determined through a static strength test, whereas the impact of the structure on the above-mentioned mechanical properties was determined based on HR-TEM observations. The results of the study confirm the formation of a precipitate with a two-phase structure (shell; core) in the EN AW-2024 alloy as well as the kinetics of their formation as a function of the parameters of the T6I6 process, such as temperature, duration and cooling rate. Strength tests have confirmed an increase in strength of the alloy to Rm = 520 MPa, with elongation remaining the same at A = 13.2%. HR-TEM observations, in turn, prove that the shell forming on the core is coherent with solid solution α, which means that the hardening of the alloy may occur as a sum of the Mott-Nabarro, Friedel and Ashby-Orowan mechanisms.","PeriodicalId":510378,"journal":{"name":"Materials Research Express","volume":"119 40","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141822259","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the present study the effects of LSP and MSP on the surface roughness, microhardness and work hardening of a nickel-based single crystal superalloy CMSX-4® have been assessed. Surface roughness was measured using laser profilometry. The degree of work hardening was measured using electron backscattered diffraction with local misorientation analysis. The analysis showed evidence for a work hardening layer in the MSP sample to a depth of approximately 70 m. Sets of slip bands extending far into the bulk of the sample were observed in the LSP-treated sample, without any evidence of a work hardening layer. Microhardness measurements used to gauge the depth of residual stress showed that LSP produced a much deeper hardness profile than MSP, with compressive residual stress depths of 1000 µm and 200 µm in LSP and MSP respectively. The retention of hardness after a heat treatment of 50 h at 700 °C was more prominent in the LSP sample than in the MSP sample. LSP and MSP have therefore been shown to be at the opposite ends of the spectrum of surface hardening treatments of CMSX-4, with LSP giving milder hardening, but to a greater depth.","PeriodicalId":510378,"journal":{"name":"Materials Research Express","volume":" 37","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141824324","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

XRD studies revealed that the samples have a diamond cubic structure with the F4 ̅3m space group. Scanning Electron Microscopy indicates that the synthesized samples possess homogeneous surfaces with fewer pores. The sample with 3% Ni exhibits an approximately eight-fold increase in electrical conductivity than the pure sample at 307 K. However, the addition of Ni decreased the Seebeck coefficient, resulting in a lower overall power factor (PF) for the composites. The highest PF of ~420 μW/mK², was observed in the pristine sample at 570 K. Although Ni addition improves electrical properties, it negatively impacts the overall thermoelectric performance due to the significant reduction in Seebeck coefficient, thereby lowering the overall power factor.","PeriodicalId":510378,"journal":{"name":"Materials Research Express","volume":" 53","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141825458","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Both the file systems underwent a series of 15 cycles of sterilization according to the following study groups: control group (G1; i.e., without treatment), chemical sterilization with 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (G2), dry heat sterilization (G3), glass beads sterilization (G4), and steam autoclaving (G5). Each group consisted of 8 samples (n=8/group). Statistical analysis was performed using a two-way ANOVA and Tukey’s tests (p≤ 0.05). Mean values for the number of cycles between both files were 1291±52.79 rpm and 2095±52.91 rpm for Tornado Blue and Race Evo, respectively. The torsional fatigue resistance was 8.00±0.85 NCF and 10.70±0.85 NCF and the bending strength was 486.94±20.97 gf and 564.17 ±20.97 gf for Tornado Blue and Race Evo, respectively. The results showed no significant difference in the mechanical properties followed by different sterilization protocols. However, a significant difference was observed in tested properties between the two file systems (p≤ 0.05). The outcome is reassuring for clinicians that the essential process of routine sterilization at clinics seems safe with regards to mechanical integrity of the endodontic files.","PeriodicalId":510378,"journal":{"name":"Materials Research Express","volume":" 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141829586","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: A Q-switched Nd-YAG solid state nanosecond pulsed laser at a wavelength of 532 nm with a fluence of 2.55x1010 W/cm2 having a pulse frequency of 10 Hz was used at varying translation stage speed and vertical spacing for the surface patterning of denture base materials. The surface properties of control and patterned materials were characterized by measuring the compositional changes, wettability, and roughness. Microbial adhesion was assessed by incubating the specimens in Candida albicans suspension at 37°C for 2 hours followed by estimating the number of adherent Candida cells. Results: The micro-Raman spectroscopic studies indicated no chemical changes in the materials due to laser patterning. However, laser patterning increased the average surface roughness from 0.02 ± 0.005 and 0.04 ± 0.003 µm to 3.85 ± 0.20 µm and 3.70 ± 0.12 µm respectively for Trevalon and DPI heat cure materials. In addition, a reduction in the surface wettability was evident as manifested by an increase in water contact angle from 76 ± 2° to 105 ± 1° for Trevalon and from 72 ± 1° to 97 ± 1° for DPI heat cure. Finally, the microbial adhesion studies clearly indicated that the surfaces with higher hydrophobicity and roughness following laser patterning exhibited reduced microbial adhesion. Significance: Laser patterning can be utilized to tune the surface features of denture base materials and thus offer a promising method to create microbial adhesion resistant surfaces. Clinically, such surfaces help in reducing the incidence of denture stomatitis, especially in immunocompromised patients, without altering the composition and bulk properties of denture base materials.","PeriodicalId":510378,"journal":{"name":"Materials Research Express","volume":" 39","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141830322","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The effect of the content of AASC and the curing period on fluidized solidified soil was studied by unconfined compression strength test, SEM and EDS. Moreover, the root cause for the improvement of the strength by the microstructure was explored. The results showed that: The fluidity increased first and then decreased with the increase of the content of AASC; 40% was the optimal content; in the same curing period, the unconfined compression strength increased with the increase of the content; 40% was the optimal content; the soil with different contents could reach the most of the 28d strength on Day 7; AASC generated a lot of low-Ca/Si C-S-H gel that consolidated soil particles into a denser structure. To address this challenge, we developed a CO2 sensor comprising a hetero-core fiber-optic surface plasmon resonance sensor coated with an ionic liquid (IL) gel as a cost-effective CO2 sensing system. Among the various sensors tested, the sensor using ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([EMIM][BF4]) as the IL, prepared at a pull-up speed of 4.5 mm/s, showed the best CO2 sensing performance. A hybrid membrane of [EMIM][BF4] and a CO2-absorbing polymer (monoethanolamine) demonstrated higher sensitivity for CO2 concentrations ranging from 0 to 100%. The highlight of the proposed system is its low-cost configuration comprising an 850 nm-wavelength LED and a photodiode as the light source and signal detection device, respectively. Along with facile preparation and low-cost system configuration, the proposed system exhibited significant potential for CO2 sensing in various fields.","PeriodicalId":510378,"journal":{"name":"Materials Research Express","volume":"57 42","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141339121","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research primarily focuses on evaluating the thermal performance of asphalt mixtures modified with varying diatomite contents. Key findings indicate significant improvements in the rutting resistance, with the dynamic stability of the 15% diatomite mixture being 3.4 times higher than the control mixture. Additionally, the 10% diatomite mixture shows a 20% increase in bending strain energy density, enhancing low-temperature performance. However, a diatomite content beyond 10% tends to diminish these benefits. Fatigue life at 10% diatomite content is improved by 18-24%, demonstrating the material's potential in extending pavement longevity. Water stability tests also reveal notable improvements, with the 15% diatomite mixture exhibiting a 15% increase in tensile strength ratio post-water conditioning. These results collectively establish diatomite as a cost-effective and efficient modifier for asphalt pavements, promoting enhanced durability and performance.","PeriodicalId":510378,"journal":{"name":"Materials Research Express","volume":"42 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141338694","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
