However, there are some limitations to the implantation effects: only a thin layer of about 100 nm can be created. In this paper, the effect of nitrogen ion implantation on the NiTi wear response is investigated. The different loads and durations of tests are taken into account to show that the implanted layer has the most beneficial effect only in a certain range of contact pressure. It was found that the wear volume changes in a non-linear manner with respect to the load and sliding length, for both non- and implanted samples. For the latter, two distinct stages can be distinguished in the wear process: an initial stage characterized by a low wear rate and a low CoF, and a second stage in which the wear rate drastically increases. The duration of the first stage is longer for lower loads. This specific behavior is explained by differences in the hardness distribution, energy dissipation due to the normal load, and differences in the microstructure of the wear tracks. Our results show that the lifetime of NiTi can be improved by ion implantation, thus boding well for applications in harsh environments.","PeriodicalId":509807,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Tribology","volume":"2 8","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141922084","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A conjugate heat transfer technique is developed to evaluate the torque and temperature distribution within the thin-film lubrication system, as the two disks advance toward each other. For the fluid domain, the energy equation is solved simultaneously with the squeeze-film equations coupled with an empirical contact model. Additionally, the energy equation is solved for the flat disk to determine the heat transfer by conduction while the grooved disk is assumed to be adiabatic. The heat exchange at the solid-fluid interface is determined iteratively using the energy equations from both the fluid and solid domains. The governing equations are solved using the finite volume method, and the numerical model is tested for grid convergence and conservation of energy. An experimental study is conducted to collect torque and temperature data that are used to validate the model for the engagement dynamics of a wet clutch. The numerical and experimental analyses demonstrate the importance of thermal effects when evaluating the dynamics of squeeze-film flow between two rotating disks. Heat transfer affects the viscous and mixed lubrication phases of the engagement process significantly, especially for low initial temperatures. Moreover, the study highlights the strong effects of flow recirculation on heat transfer due to the complex geometry of the grooved friction material.","PeriodicalId":509807,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Tribology","volume":"86 24","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141922347","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system is composed of a flexible rotor and rolling element bearings (REBs) positioned within flexible housings. The dynamics of the REBs were simulated using a previously developed ADAMS dynamic bearing model (DBM) using the discrete element method (DEM) in the MSC ADAMS environment. The ADAMS bearing model was coupled through a set of interface points using component mode synthesis (CMS) for the rotor and housing model. The bearing outer races were discretized into multiple nodes to compute the force and deformation at the bearing housing conformal contact as well as to minimize the computational requirements associated with the conformal contact problems. The integrated model was then utilized to investigate the effects of rotor flexibility in the bearing rotor system and the effect of bearing clearance and housing clearance on bearing dynamics. The model developed demonstrated that the flexibility of the rotor has a significant effect on bearing element motion and dynamics. The results also indicate that depending on the bearing type, the shaft deflection can induce a moment within the bearing that is not readily available from elementary theory. The results show that the flexible housing undergoes deformations that create ovality in the bearing housing, thus affecting bearing dynamics. The model was also used to investigate bearing performance in a miniature wind turbine main shaft.","PeriodicalId":509807,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Tribology","volume":"14 23","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141925349","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A long continuous chip is formed when the plastic deformation dominates, whereas a fracture-induced discontinuous chip is formed when the brittle fracture dominates. The means of material removal changes at a certain cutting depth for a particular material, the so-called transition depth of cut (TDoC). This article aims to predict the TDoC while including the effect of friction between the tool and workpiece. We propose a modification to a recently developed model [1] to incorporate the effect of friction. The model predicts a transitional depth of cut as a function of tool geometry, material properties and friction. The model is supported by performing orthogonal cutting experiments on different polymers such as PMMA, POM and PC. The model is also compared with existing models in the literature, where an improvement in the prediction of TDoC is shown. Moreover, the effect of the friction coefficient and rake angle on the TDoC is discussed. The results show that transitional cutting depth is reduced by increasing the friction coefficient. Alternatively, the TDoC reaches its maximum at an optimum rake angle, which is a function of specific material being cut. The model aids in accurately predicting the TDoC, a crucial factor for optimizing various material removal processes.","PeriodicalId":509807,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Tribology","volume":"81 23","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141812647","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, an advanced approach is investigated to optimize the performance of the water-lubricated thrust bearings, in which the surface textures are introduced and optimized using topological optimization. By this approach, the influence of speed, misalignment angle, surface roughness, and lubrication state can be analyzed. The results demonstrate that with the increase in speed and the decrease in film thickness ratio, the topological texture's shape becomes increasingly slender. Additionally, the increase in misalignment angle results in a simpler texture. When the film thickness ratio remains unchanged, a decrease in surface roughness leads to a greater number of texture branches, resulting in a finer texture overall. When compared to the thrust bearing with the groove type texture, the thrust bearing with the optimized texture was found to have a higher load carrying capacity, in some cases up to 6 times higher. The proposed approach offers valuable insights and directions for further research focused on enhancing the efficiency of texture optimization.","PeriodicalId":509807,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Tribology","volume":"120 26","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141821965","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The framework ultimately delivers an electrode distribution on an elastomeric substrate such that a voltage-controlled texture may be induced on its surface. This enables the setup to attain a desired time-dependent macroscopic lubrication response. The computational framework is based on a numerically efficient two-stage design approach. In the first stage, a topology optimization framework is introduced for determining a microscopic texture and the uniform modulation of its amplitude. The objective is to attain the targeted fluid flux or frictional traction signals based on the homogenization-based macroscopic response of the texture. As a minor goal, a novel unit cell geometry optimization feature will be developed which will enable working in a design space that is as unrestricted as possible. The obtained designs are then transferred to the second stage where the electrode distribution on a soft substrate is determined along with the voltage variation that delivers the desired amplitude variation. The first stage operates in a two-dimensional setting based on the Reynolds equation whereas the second stage operates in a three-dimensional setting based on an electroelasticity formulation. The two stages are heuristically coupled by transferring the texture topology to the electrode distribution through a projection approach. The viability of such an active lubrication interface design approach is demonstrated through numerous examples that methodically investigate the central features of the overall computational framework.","PeriodicalId":509807,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Tribology","volume":"118 18","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141822273","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this technology, the synthesis of SOM with appropriate S and Mo contents and successful generation of enough MoS2 during friction by adjusted working conditions are two crucial factors determining the efficiency of SOM on the friction-reduction and anti-wear behaviors of the SOM-containing oils. Given the fact that SOM additives have been used intensively in both laboratory researches and engineering applications, this review discusses in detail the molecular structures, tribological behaviors, compatibility and synergistic effects with the other additives, and some application bottlenecks of the reported SOM compounds that may constrain their wide applications as lubricant additives. In the model, a sinusoidal function is adopted to simulate the profile of the waviness section. According to the contact tangency condition, a model of the contact deformation relationship between a single rolling element and the raceways is established. On this basis, a full circumferential rolling elements contact load distribution model of the bearing is established by introducing the contact deformation of all rolling elements with the raceway surfaces. Focusing on contact deformation of a full circumferential rolling elements with the raceways, this model can conduct more accurate modeling and reflect the load distribution state inside the bearing more realistically. The correctness of the mechanical analysis model proposed in this paper is proved by an average error of 3.38%, which is the comparison result between the mechanical analysis model and the finite element model.
