Using advanced statistical analysis, a total of 250 rice cultivars were assessed for several anaerobic germination attributes. Significant variability was observed among genotypes for key traits including germination % (ARC14855, AG 387), shoot length and seedling dry weight, indicating potential donors for anaerobic germination tolerance. Trait association analysis, variability analysis, principal component analysis and cluster analysis were employed to uncover the genetic and phenotypic factors influencing anaerobic germination tolerance. The genotypes of cluster III could be used as donors for anaerobic germination studies, as the genotypes have revealed high average values for all the traits. The findings underscore the importance of genetic variability and heritability in breeding resilient rice varieties suited for DSR cultivation, offering valuable insights for enhancing rice cultivation practices in the face of challenges such as water scarcity and labour shortages. To improve the sustainability and productivity of paddy production systems, this research advances rice breeding procedures that aim to create varieties tolerant to anaerobic conditions.","PeriodicalId":509766,"journal":{"name":"Plant Science Today","volume":" 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141364907","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Anthropogenic influences have precipitated a decline in the wild populations of Tulipa, including those in Uzbekistan, necessitating the development of forward-looking conservation strategies. This study focuses on advancing biotechnological strategies for in vitro micropropagation to conserve endangered wild Tulipa species in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Tulipa ingens and Tulipa fosteriana, listed as vulnerable and near threatened, respectively, on the IUCN Red List, face numerous anthropogenic threats including habitat loss and overexploitation. Our research demonstrates the effectiveness of sterilization protocols, successful micropropagation from seeds, and the importance of adapting to non-sterile conditions. Through meticulous experimentation, a novel sterilization approach involving a 5 percent Domestos solution coupled with brief ethanol exposure yielded the highest viability rates for plant materials. Micropropagation from seeds resulted in successful shoot and microbulb formation, providing a promising conservation strategy for these rare species. The study underscores the urgency of conservation efforts in Uzbekistan, where the extent of occurrence and area of occupancy of these species classify them as endangered. Our findings contribute valuable data for ex-situ conservation measures, offering hope for the preservation of red-listed Tulipa species in the region.","PeriodicalId":509766,"journal":{"name":"Plant Science Today","volume":" 72","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141365597","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

(Sainfoin) is a valuable pasture plant that is resistant to drought, produces high biomass and is not inferior to alfalfa in terms of nutrient content. It is urgent to research the possibilities of cultivation of this plant for the purpose of growing hay in hilly conditions. The presence of nitrogen-fixing Rhizobium bacteria in the roots of plants is important in increasing the fertility of desert soils and this feature increases its role in the creation of artificial grasslands in hilly conditions. In the experiments, it was shown that it is possible to reach 100 % germination by mechanical scarification of the seeds isolated from O. chorasanica pods using sandpaper. Germination of unscarred seeds in field conditions depends on the year and the depth of planting them in the soil. In a dry year, the highest fertility was observed to be 13.3-15.0 % in the options where the seeds were buried at a depth of 3-4 cm, and in years with abundant rainfall, this indicator was 35.3 % in the option where the seeds were buried at a depth of 3 cm. The viability of lawns in the 2nd year of life was 72-95 % in different options. Hay productivity of O. chorasanica was found to be 41 centners per ha in hilly conditions and seed yield was up to 250 kg. The results obtained in the research are promising for the intensification of feed production of O. chorasanica in local conditions. The obtained results serve to increase the biomass yield of pasture plants and the variety of used feeds in farms specializing in animal husbandry.","PeriodicalId":509766,"journal":{"name":"Plant Science Today","volume":" 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141366470","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Like in other species of Curcuma, the pharmacologically important polyphenol curcumin is also found in C. caesia. In traditional medicine, C. caesia has been used to treat piles, leprosy, asthma, cancer, diabetes, fertility, toothache, vomiting, allergies, etc. Drying is considered the simplest and most cost-effective means of preserving raw plant materials, safeguarding the integrity of nearly all biologically active substances. Medicinal plant materials are primarily utilized in their dried forms in pharmaceutical industries. However, it has been observed that there is a lack of comprehensive information on the effects of different drying methods on quality parameters, and other pharmaceutically important aspects of C. caesia. Hence, here, we investigated the impact of various drying methods, such as direct sunlight exposure, solar drying, shade drying, and conventional oven drying with or without previous boiling, on the quality parameters of C. caesia rhizome, such as moisture, ash, and curcumin content. The results suggest that oven drying at 100 ?C, despite possessing favorable criteria for drug designing like the smallest particle sizes and the lowest moisture content, did not restore the maximum level of ash, curcumin, and essential mineral elements. Nevertheless, boiling in the range of 60 ?C – 80 ?C for 30 minutes before drying restores the pharmaceutically important qualities more favorably. The results of this study will help to formulate better treatment for restoring the market-preferable optimum quality of C. caesia.","PeriodicalId":509766,"journal":{"name":"Plant Science Today","volume":" 58","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141367411","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Understanding the biophysical and biochemical aspects of resistance is essential for developing methods to breed insect pest resistance in germplasm. To identify genotypes with diverse traits associated with resistance to this pest, we investigated the biophysical and biochemical traits implicated in conferring resistance to M. vitrata across ten accessions of vegetable cowpea, alongside resistant and susceptible check. Trichomes on pods emerged as a pivotal aspects of resistance in these genotypes, exhibiting a significant negative correlation with the percentage of seed damage inflicted by M. vitrata. In our study, genotypes with higher pod trichome density showed a reduction in seed damage caused by the pest. Additionally, a high phenol concentration and low levels of total sugars and proteins were associated with resistance to M. vitrata. Vegetable cowpea genotypes characterized by abundant pod trichomes and elevated phenol level hold promise for breeding efforts aimed at developing cultivars resistant to M. vitrata.","PeriodicalId":509766,"journal":{"name":"Plant Science Today","volume":" 46","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141368041","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consequently, research focus has shifted towards the quest for effective agents of biological origin. The aim of the present study was to assess the antioxidant and antimicrobial potentials of aqueous and organic extracts derived from various parts of Alcea kurdica. Different parts of A. kurdica were obtained and prepared into leaf, flower and root powders. The powders were extracted with aqueous and organic solvents. The antimicrobial activity of these extracts was assessed against bacterial pathogens using the agar well-diffusion assay. Additionally, the antioxidant effects of the extracts were evaluated using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and resazurin dye scavenging assays. The results showed dose-dependent antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli for both the organic and aqueous leaf and floral extracts. Furthermore, an antioxidant effect (>80%) was also observed for the organic and water extracts of the flowers, leaves and roots of the plant at the highest concentration (500 µg/ml), as compared to ascorbic acid, which served as the positive control using both the DPPH and resazurin methods. The findings of this study highlighted that A. kurdica can be considered a rich source of potential antioxidant and antibacterial agents, warranting future investigation to identify its active ingredients.","PeriodicalId":509766,"journal":{"name":"Plant Science Today","volume":" 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141370065","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
