To identify the most commonly used medicinal plants in traditional medicine for treating common respiratory disorders, an ethnobotanical survey was conducted in the Draa Tafilalet region, South-Eastern Morocco, involving 235 herbalists and sellers of medicinal plants from three provinces (Errachidia, Tinghir, and Zagora). Ethnobotanical data were evaluated using use value (UV), frequency of citation (FC), relative frequency of citation (RFC), and family importance value (FIV). The survey identified a total of 76 species belonging to 39 families, with the most represented being Lamiaceae, Apiaceae, and Asteraceae, followed by Fabaceae. As for the most commonly used species against respiratory disorders, they include Origanum vulgare L. (UV = 0.413), Artemisia herba-alba (UV = 0.370), Foeniculum vulgare (UV = 0.357), Thymus vulgaris (UV = 0.332), Lavandula dentata (UV = 0.319), Matricaria chamomilla (UV = 0.311), Nigella sativa (UV = 0.302), Allium sativum L. (UV = 0.298), Eucalyptus globulus (UV = 0.289), and Plantago major L. (UV= 0.281). Decoction (48.68%) and infusion (47.37%) are the most recommended preparation methods by herbalists for remedies. Leaves are the most prescribed part, while the majority of plants are exclusively administered orally (92.11%). This ethnobotanical survey holds the potential to aid scientists and researchers in identifying plants that treat common respiratory disorders, potentially invaluable for the development of novel drugs.","PeriodicalId":509766,"journal":{"name":"Plant Science Today","volume":"1 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141272723","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A pre-structured questionnaire survey and quantitative analysis were carried out to record the medicinal plants and to determine the ailments categories. In this study, 141 species belonging to 129 genera and 63 families were recorded from the highland sacred grove Amaran Kavu, and 198 species belonging to 176 genera and 75 families were recorded from the lowland grove Nagampoozhimana Kavu. Habit-wise analysis of the flora showed that trees are the dominant forms (37.58%) in the highland hilly grove, while herbs dominate (36.86%) in the coastal grove. The ethno-floristic survey revealed a total of 102 species of medicinal plants belonging to 90 genera and 50 families. The significance of the plant species was quantified by using family use value, use value index, and informant consensus factor. The highest family use value index (FUV) was reported in the families Piperaceae, Caesalpiniaceae, Combretaceae, etc. and the maximum Use Value (1) was reported in Curcuma longa L. and Ocimum basilicum L., which are the high use valued species among the community and Use Value Index (UVI) ranges from 0.05-1. The Informant Consensus Factor (ICF) value ranged from 0.93 to 0 and the greatest value (0.93) was obtained for postnatal care, earache (0.92), migraine, and headache (0.9). The present study reveals that the indigenous people living around the sacred groves depend on the plant species for their health care. However, proper management is required for the conservation of sacred groves through sustainable utilization of medicinal plants occurring in the groves.","PeriodicalId":509766,"journal":{"name":"Plant Science Today","volume":"11 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141269374","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, estimations of the phenolic, flavonoids and tannin contents, HPTLC profile and in vitro anti-oxidant and anti-microbial potential of 3 extracts of the Panchatikta were carried out. The total phenolic content of the Panchatikta combination was almost the same in ethanol, water and hydroalcoholic extracts. Flavonoid content and tannin content were highest in ethanol extract. HPTLC profiling of the 3 extracts of Panchatikta showed the maximum number of peaks for the ethanolic extract. Water extract showed a comparatively smaller number of peaks. The maximum number of peaks was seen after derivatisation. In the DPPH assay, gallic acid has IC50 value of 5.50 ± 0.38 µg/mL; ethanol and hydroalcoholic extracts have IC50 close to 60 µg/mL and water extract has around 90 µg/mL. The ABTS assay showed standard ascorbic acid has a IC50 value of 67.33 ± 0.58 µg/mL while Panchatikta extracts have a much higher IC50. In nitric oxide assay also, tested samples have a higher IC50 when compared with that of ascorbic acid (177.33 ± 5.09). In well diffusion assay for antibacterial screening, all 3 extracts have a significant zone of inhibition at concentrations of 500 µg and 1000 µg. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was found to be resistant to all 3 test samples and standard antibiotic discs. Minimum activity was obtained against Klebsiella pneumonia. Panchatikta extracts at concentrations of 500 µg and 1000 µg showed significant activity against the fungal strains Aspergillus niger and Fusarium oxysporum. In conclusion, the results of the study can provide scientific support for the traditional usage of the Ayurvedic drug combination Panchatikta for various ailments.","PeriodicalId":509766,"journal":{"name":"Plant Science Today","volume":"7 5","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141100842","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

So, this work aims to realize the unexplored potential of E. serratus as an agroforestry resource by evaluating the economic as well as marketing status of the fruits. The methodology consists of assessing the resource distribution, fruit yield, constraints for domestication and economic viability of E. serratus. According to resource quantification data, cluster 1 had the highest average fruit yield (32.5 kg). The respondents' opinionated harvesting challenges, with a mean Likert score of 3.711, underscore that the majority of fruits were wasted. The processed, salt dipped fruits have the highest selling profit of 150 INR (USD 1.80) per kg. The selling of fruits through different market channels and the t-test analysis of profit of raw and processed fruits indicated a significant difference (P<0.001). The raw and processed fruits have a total marketing cost of 995 INR (12 USD) and 1030 INR (USD 12.44) (for 10 kg). However, the marketing efficiency and degree of market performance were observed to be poor. The lack of value-added products, scattered distributions, seasonal availability and priority for exotic fruits affect their demand. Further, the study emphasizes the need to address marketing challenges and explore the economic potential of E. serratus. This aligns with the broader goal of sustainable management and commercial feasibility of other underutilized fruits globally and the report is the first of our knowledge.","PeriodicalId":509766,"journal":{"name":"Plant Science Today","volume":"58 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141113399","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sweet, a multipurpose leguminous plant is traditionally used as an antifertility and abortifacient agent among the Karbi, an indigenous tribe living in Assam, North East India. The present study emphasized the scientific validation of the indigenous utilization of this plant extract as an antifertility and abortifacient along with their physicochemical, phytochemical, and in silico ADME features. Fresh roots (450 gm) are processed for physicochemical, preliminary phytochemical screening, and GC-MS analysis. Organoleptic studies, moisture content, swelling index, flow properties (Carr’s index and Hausner ratio), extractive values (highest in aqueous extract), and ash content revealed the plants are potential sources of phytomedicines having the minimum required parameters as per WHO standards. The value of Carr’s index (22%) and Hausner's ratio (1.27) indicates that the powder drugs have greater inter-particle interactions, which signifies poor flowing powder. Phytochemical screening of root extracts showed the presence of flavonoids, tannins, phenolic compounds, alkaloids, coumarins, and terpenoids. GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of Arsenous acid tris(trimethylsilyl; Cyclic siloxane compounds; Pivalic Acid, 2-Methylpropyl Ester; Propanoic Acid, 2,2-Dimethyl-, Ethyl Ester and N-(Trifluoroacetyl)-N, O, O', O''-Tetrakis (Trimethylsilyl) Norepinephrine, having potential reproductive and developmental toxicity and also stimulates progesterone production. According to SwissADME, drug-like properties of Arsenous Acid, Tri (Trimethylsilyl) Ester, Heptasiloxane, and Pivalic Acid, etc., identified in the root extract have the potential for use as an orally active antifertility and abortifacient medicine. Since L. purpureus has been used traditionally by the Karbi tribe for ages and contains bioactive compounds such as antifertility and abortifacient, it may be considered an important ethnomedicine. Laboratory animal experimentation may be studied more in the future for its precise use of root extract for effectiveness and to advance the drug-discovery process.\u0000 ","PeriodicalId":509766,"journal":{"name":"Plant Science Today","volume":"2 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141111126","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the difficulties in identifying Dendrobium species is when the specimens bear no flowers or other fertile structures. The use of leaf anatomical characters for species identification is one of the possible solutions in dealing with sterile specimens. In this study, leaf anatomy was examined to assess its taxonomic significance in differentiating species and constructing phenetic relationships between sections within the genus Dendrobium. Sixteen specimens of Dendrobium from 14 species belonging to 9 sections were collected from South Kalimantan. Observations of leaf cross-sections resulted in 60 anatomical characters used for revealing taxonomic relationships between species using cluster analysis and principal component analysis. The result of the cluster analysis showed that the 14 species of Dendrobium were grouped into 3 clusters. The grouping patterns of species were corresponded to sectional classification.  The results of the principal component analysis indicated that the characters of the vascular bundles, hypodermis, epidermis and cuticle showed a major role in recognizing species from different sections. This study confirmed the role of leaf anatomy as taxonomic evidence for the identification of sterile specimens and for supporting classification at a sectional level in the genus Dendrobium.","PeriodicalId":509766,"journal":{"name":"Plant Science Today","volume":"43 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141112348","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
