The study adopted descriptive survey design and used structured questionnaire to collect primary data. The targeted 120 managers of relevant sections in listed commercial banks in Kenya, where Yamame’s stratified sampling formula was used to calculate a sample size of 93 respondents who were selected through simple random sampling. SPPS version 24 was used to analyze the data. Descriptive statistical analysis was used to summarize data using frequencies, percentages and means while inferential statistics was computed to examine correlation, linear and multiple relationships between the independent and dependent variables. A total of 93 questionnaires were sent to the listed commercial banks for data collection and 85 questionnaires were returned completely filled, depicting a response rate of 91.4% which was very good for generalizability of the research findings to a wider population. Both descriptive and inferential statistics showed that all the conceptualized independent variables (operational excellence, strategic alliance, product and customer intimacy intelligence) significantly influence growth of listed commercial banks (dependent variable). The study concluded that one, operational excellence significantly influences growth of commercial banks in the sense that efficient operations improve service quality; two, banks that engage in strategic alliance with telecommunication firms and agency banking can realize an increase in customer base; three, commercial banks with high customer intimacy intelligence can get reliable information about key products that attract and retain a huge customer base. The study recommended that one, operations managers in commercial banks should roll out innovative process operational tools to improve operational efficiency, two, managers of listed commercial banks should engage viable strategic mergers with telecommunication firms and reinforce agency banking so as to attract and retain more customers that can boost bank growth; and three, marketing managers in commercial banks should have an effective customer feedback mechanism so as to timely address product and service related complaints from customers so as not to compromise the cherished relationship that the customers have with their commercial banks. A descriptive survey design was adopted. The target population was drawn from 51 medium sized enterprises in Kenya which participated in the KPMG top 100 mid-sized ranking for the period 2011 to 2015. Multi stage, systematic and purposive sampling was used to select a sample of 255 which had the data needed in the study. Primary data was collected using questionnaires which were pretested for reliability and validity to determine it suitability for use in the study. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used in the analysis of data to generate frequency distribution of the responses and descriptive statistics. It was found that network structure was positively and significantly related to financial performance. The finding lends support to the social network theory, indicating that the more networks the entrepreneur is linked to the more it will affect financial performance. The study findings were that alliances, partnerships, collaborations, or networking assisted the entrepreneur with an access to other individuals’ links. Thus, there will be an extended web of associations that will ultimately lead to identification of new prospects and a broader network of customers and clients. This was evidenced by the responses from the respondents who participated in the study. The findings encourage managers to engage in active networking with different actors within and outside of existing networks and especially with those who are relevant to the business in which the manager and a firm operate. The results strongly support the necessity for managers to create active co-operational relationships. The study concluded that an individual can be constrained in a network if they have too few contacts; has contacts closely connected with one another; or shares information indirectly via a central contact. It can thus be settled that businesses with larger advantage-generating or advantage-improving capacities could gain more from solid network structure, while those with inferior abilities are better off if they form coalition with enterprises from distant network groups, and hence forming a network structure endowed with comprehensive entrepreneurial networks. The study recommended that medium enterprises should become entrenched in various forms of network structure since through this they can track varied competitive approach. It is also recommended that medium sized enterprises in Kenya invest in networking activities, close interconnections and suitable resource partners that would ensure that they maintain a key network behavior which is aligned to the industry leaders. Evidently, the competition within the industry must be steep for any insurance firm seeking to make substantial gains in market share. Creating cost advantages and leveraging on them can significantly improve the performance prospects of the insurance firms and enable them to remain competitive in the active markets and break new ground in potential markets. However, the aspect of cost leadership has not been explored in detail in regards to the competitiveness of insurance firms in Kenya. The objective of the study, therefore, was to determine the effect of cost leadership strategy on performance of insurance companies in Nairobi, Kenya. The study was guided by the Resource Based View strategies. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study that also targeted 1443 top, middle and lower level managers in 43 insurance companies registered in Nairobi. From these 54 managers were selected for the study using systematic random sampling. Data was collected using pretested copies of a structured questionnaire developed by the researcher. Data was analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistical methods. The findings revealed that the cost leadership strategy employed by the insurance firms moderately affected their performance. The study recommended that insurance firms should embrace and invest in cost leadership strategies most especially forming linkages with service providers, suppliers and other supplementary institutions .  Keywords: Cost leadership Strategy, Generic Strategies, Performance ITATION: Msinga, S.
