TTMD is a passive vibration absorber, and it consists of two parallel undamped tuned mass dampers connected by a dashpot. The influences of its parameters on the vibration absorption capacity are studied through numerical examples. Next, the optimum parameters of TTMD are found, and the performance and robustness of TTMD are determined. The results from this study show that, for absorbing the structural vibration, an optimum TTMD is more effective than a conventional TMD with the same weight as TTMD. In other words, using TTMD significantly reduces the added weight to the main structure compared with using TMD based on the same condition and obtained effectiveness. Moreover, while maintaining the same performance and weight, an optimum TTMD is much more robust than an optimum TMD for resisting the change in structural stiffness.","PeriodicalId":505725,"journal":{"name":"Engineering Research Express","volume":" 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141676764","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Electromagnetic interface (EMI) can cause the system/device to lose the data, damage the electronic equipment, interrupt the audio, or video signals, lead to poor reception, etc. EMI filters are used in telecommunications, military equipment, satellite communication, etc. At the industry level, EMI filters are used for home appliances, medical equipment, motor controls, test equipment, etc. In this paper, active and passive EMI filters are designed to avoid or attenuate EMI or noise (unwanted EMI signal) and implemented on Xilinx Nexys 4 Artix 7 FPGA board. The filters provide a significant improvement in the attenuation of the EMI. MATLAB tool is used to design the filters, which are highly immune to undesired signals, give better stability, and perform over a wide range of frequencies. Depending on the filters' coefficients, the frequency response will be changed. Phase response and amplitude response of the EMI filters are calculated. Insertion loss of the active filter is 1.5836, and for the passive filter, 1.9382. The gain of active and passive filters is 0.7359 and 0.912 respectively. The return loss of the active and passive EMI filters is 20dB. HDL code is generated using MATLAB for the implementation of filter on FPGA. Using MATLAB HDL coder for implementing is new and it simplifies the design, as a result development time is reduced. Xilinx Vivado tool is used for the implementation of active filter. The total on-chip power is 0.146W. Dynamic power is 0.049W, and device static power is 0.097W. The utilization of LUTs and slice registers are less, compared to the previous filter implementation, which leads to reduce the cost of hardware implementation.","PeriodicalId":505725,"journal":{"name":"Engineering Research Express","volume":" 31","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141676870","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Voltage imbalance is a common issue that can negatively affect the efficiency, reliability, and safety of EESs. Several types of voltage balancing (VB) circuits have been proposed in much of the literature. Among these VB circuits, switched capacitor (SC)-based circuits have attracted significant interest due to their efficiency, cost-effectiveness, compact size, and ease of control, but their balancing performance is not yet satisfactory. As a result, structural modifications in SC-based circuits have been widely proposed to improve balancing performance. However, not all of these circuit structures have been implemented into a resonant switched capacitor (RSC)-based voltage balancing, which has higher efficiency. Hence, this study aims to assess the efficiency of RSC-based VB circuits by conducting analog simulation using the Matlab Simulink software. This research evaluates the performance of the VB circuit not only in terms of its speed and efficiency, but also in terms of its energy distribution. The results show that the delta structure is the fastest in terms of balancing speed when completing the balancing process, followed by the mesh structure and the parallel structure. The best energy distribution is produced by a parallel structure, as indicated by the change in voltage of all battery cells always moving towards a convergent value, regardless of the variations in initial imbalance conditions. Meanwhile, other circuit structures distribute energy randomly, allowing the voltage of the battery cells to change not directly towards a convergent value. Lastly, the paper summarizes the balancing speed, efficiency, circuit complexity, and quality of energy distribution.","PeriodicalId":505725,"journal":{"name":"Engineering Research Express","volume":" 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141677808","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main intricate part of such bio-inspired soft robots are soft pneumatic actuators (SPA) which replicate or mimic the limbs and muscles. The soft actuators are pneumatically actuated and provide bending motion in most cases. However, many engineering and medical applications need axially expanding soft pneumatic actuators to deal with delicate objects. Various studies have put forward designs for SPA with axial deformation, but the majority of them have limited axial deformation, constraining motion and less overall efficacy which limit the scope of utilization. The common practice to enhance the axial deformation of SPA is by incorporating directionally customized reinforcement using fibres or by other means like yarns, fabrics, etc. These types of reinforcements are generally embedded to SPA during fabrication and may not have capability for any correction or modification later on hence lack the customization. This paper presents a novel method of radial reinforcement for the enhancement of axial deformation of SPAs with provision of customization. The present study aims to enhance and/or customize the axial deformation of SPA by incorporating external and detachable reinforcement in the form of annulus shaped cap ring. The investigation encompasses the design and attachment of four distinct cap ring geometries to SPA at different locations. Experimental results affirm that cap ring reinforcement bolster the radial stiffness, curbing lateral deformation while permitting axial deformation of soft pneumatic actuators. Out of 64 distinct configurations, the one with full reinforcement, featuring four cap rings of maximum size, yields a remarkable 169% increase in pure axial deformation compared to unreinforced cases. It is also observed that by varying the number and placement locations of cap rings the pure axial deformation can be customized. This novel insight not only propels soft pneumatic actuation technology but also heralds prospects for highly agile and versatile robotic systems which can be used in medical, prosthetics, pharmaceutical and other industries.","PeriodicalId":505725,"journal":{"name":"Engineering Research Express","volume":" 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141678614","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite the rapid advancements in deep learning that have significantly improved object detection tasks, air-to-air unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) detection continues to pose significant challenges. Challenges such as complex backgrounds, small size of UAVs in captured images, and variations in flight poses and angles pose significant difficulties for traditional deep learning approaches, mainly because of the inherent limitations of conventional convolutional neural network architectures in discriminating fine details against dynamically changing backdrops. To address these challenges, this study introduces EA-DINO, a new deep learning network based on enhanced aggregation (EA) and DINO. The network incorporates a series of improvements over DINO. First, the backbone is replaced with a Swin transformer, and agent attention is integrated. Second, an EA feature pyramid network is added to the network architecture. Experimental evaluations demonstrate that, in the context of air-to-air UAV detection complexities, the EA-DINO model achieves an $mAP_{50}$ of 96.6% on the Det-Fly dataset, representing an improvement of 8.3% over the baseline DINO model. This improvement is noteworthy compared with other mainstream models, illustrating the effectiveness of the proposed model in addressing the challenges of air-to-air UAV detection.","PeriodicalId":505725,"journal":{"name":"Engineering Research Express","volume":" 29","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141677984","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An approximate model offers a viable solution for analyzing such uncertain responses. This study introduces an efficient approximate model, called PCE-HDMR, which is founded on the Legendre Polynomial Chaos Expansion (PCE) and High-Dimensional Model Representation (HDMR). Specifically, the Legendre PCE in interval space is employed to delineate the lower and upper bounds of uncertain responses. At the same time, the HDMR is harnessed to develop a high-dimensional uncertainty model that approximates the dynamic response. To demonstrate the application of PCE-HDMR, a model for a vehicle with interval parameters was constructed using a 9-DOF dynamics model for testing. In this framework, all stiffness and damping parameters are treated as interval uncertainty parameters. The numerical results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method for high-dimensional uncertain parameters, demonstrating that PCE-HDMR outperforms Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) in terms of efficiency. This study advances an effective interval uncertainty analysis approach for assessing vehicle performance, particularly when dealing with high-dimensional interval uncertainty parameters. The proposed method serves as a viable alternative for interval analysis and subsequent optimization design for complex vehicle systems characterized by high-dimensional uncertain parameters.","PeriodicalId":505725,"journal":{"name":"Engineering Research Express","volume":" 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141678389","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The device scaling presents the short channel effects (SCEs) in the nanoscale regime. To address the SCEs, nanometer IC designers have turned to the carbon nanotube field-effect transistor (CNTFET) technology, which offers unique properties and mitigates the challenges associated with transistor scaling. In this research work, a leakage reduction technique known as the input-dependent (INDEP) method is suggested to tackle the leakage current issue at the nanoscale regime using CNTFET technology. The INDEP method involves the incorporation of two additional transistors within the logic circuit. To evaluate the efficacy of the INDEP method, a CNTFET-based 7-stage inverter chain is meticulously designed at 32 nm CNTFET technology node. Subsequent comparative analysis against alternative designs is conducted, assessing performance metrics such as power dissipation, delay, and power delay product (PDP). The suggested INDEP method reduces power dissipation by 83.75% and improves PDP by 78.44%. Furthermore, the study delves into the impact of process, voltage, and temperature (PVT) variations. Additionally, the investigation explores the influence of parameters such as the number of carbon nanotubes, temperature, supply voltage, and chiral indices on the performance of the 7-stage inverter chain. The simulation results demonstrate that the CNTFET-based INDEP technique yields promising outcomes, characterized by low power dissipation, precise output, and minimal uncertainty across all evaluated metrics.","PeriodicalId":505725,"journal":{"name":"Engineering Research Express","volume":" 57","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141680320","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The low melting point and easy recyclability also attract the scientific community to apply such material in modern manufacturing. The revolution in aluminium alloys came after the invention of friction stir welding, which provided high-end welding results and catastrophically increased its application in aerospace industries. Still, many inconclusive studies need to be explored for its high-end application, especially for newly invented aluminium alloy composites. Hence, this study investigates the application of friction stir welding process for welding dissimilar Aluminium alloy compositions. The investigation starts by analysing the effect of rotational speed, feed rate, and force on temperature generation, hardness, and welding strength. Three levels of process parameters, i.e. rotational speed in the range of 1000–1200 rpm, force of 12–18 N and feed rate of 40-60 mm/min, are selected to analyse the effect on hardness and strength of the weld. After analysis, the optimum conditions obtained were a rotational speed of 1200 rpm, a feed rate of 50 mm/min, and an average load of 18 N for a maximum hardness of 93.16 BHN and welding strength of 228 MPa. The investigation's findings indicated that several phenomena, including the effects of high blending activity, plastic disfigurement, the repercussions of grain structure, and frictional intensity, may influence the hardness and strength of the weld. The growth of uniform structure at the stirred area is caused by pin movement during welding, specifically from the retreating side to the advancing side.","PeriodicalId":505725,"journal":{"name":"Engineering Research Express","volume":" 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141677658","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moreover, to try to cope with the unparalleled operating conditions of PV plants, many bio-inspired meta-heuristic algorithms have already been suggested in the literature, but their implementation is often complex and difficult. In this sense, we propose a novel algorithm for monitoring the (MPPT), using the newly meta-heuristic approach of herd horse optimization (HHO). A DC/DC boost converter is utilised in the suggested controllers to extract the most power possible from the PV resource. The system is programmed and modelled using the MATLAB/SIMULINK software, which also studies four shadow models and a 3S1P topography of single-junction solar arrays. Considering partial shading conditions (PSC), the success of the power values in the global maximum power point (GMPP) of the proposed method is between 99.64% and 99.07%. Besides the time to capture the GMPP by the proposed algorithm is between 0.396 s and 1.666 s, shorter than that of the CSA and FPA algorithms. Due to the harmful pollutant emissions from fossil fuels, the world has turned to renewable and alternative fuels to limit toxic emissions and greenhouse effects. Ethanol is a biofuel that, when used in spark ignition engine with gasoline can improve the octane number, combustion efficiency, and produce less emissions. The current research studies the effect of different ethanol blends E0, E5, E10, and E15 with gasoline 92 on engine performance parameters and emissions of a GX35 four stroke engine at different engine speeds. The results along the speed range reveal that increasing ethanol amount leads to an average increase of 2.7%, 1%, and 1.1% in brake power (BP), brake thermal efficiency (BTE), and CO2 emissions, respectively. Meanwhile, it causes an average decrease of 28 ℃, 3%, 15 ppm, and 0.18% in exhaust gas temperature (EGT), brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC), HC, and CO emissions respectively. Moreover, the current study develops an Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) model for predicting performance and emissions of spark ignition (SI) engine. Python programming language is used for ANN coding to train and validate the ANN model with E15. Regression plots were generated to visualize the correlation between the target and predicted data, indicating outstanding performance. The results confirmed the model's reliability for BP, EGT, CO, CO2, and HC parameters with R2 value more than 0.99 and with acceptable performance for BSFC and BTE with R2 of 0.9339, and 0.9708, respectively.","PeriodicalId":505725,"journal":{"name":"Engineering Research Express","volume":"10 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141683938","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
