This study provides visual and auditory physical interventions to patients in order to explore the effects of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery following abdominal surgery. The study group consisted of patients who had undergone laparoscopic cholecystectomy, radical resection of gastric cancer, or radical resection of colon cancer; we randomly divided them into a control group and a visual and auditory intervention group. We then monitored the bowel sound frequency and time of the first anal self-exsufflation for both groups after surgery. We found that compared with the control group, patients who had undergone laparoscopic cholecystectomy and radical gastrectomy who received auditory intervention had increased bowel sound frequency and a shorter time until first anal self-exsufflation. In addition, patients with colon cancer who received both auditory and visual stimulation had increased bowel sounds and shorter time until the first anal self-exsufflation. These results suggest that visual and auditory interventions significantly improve patients' gastrointestinal function, shorten the hospitalization period, and reduce complications after operation.</p>","PeriodicalId":504885,"journal":{"name":"Gastroenterology nursing : the official journal of the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates","volume":" ","pages":"116-121"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2021-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"25541284","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography scopes have a specialized elevator wire channel, allowing more flexible duct cannulation; however, this channel can be difficult to reprocess with standard techniques. Although strict adherence to manufacturer reprocessing protocols remains the primary means of infection prevention, periodic microbiological surveillance is a Food and Drug Administration-recommended practice that the Medical University of South Carolina has implemented to further prevent duodenoscope-associated infections. The Medical University of South Carolina obtains 2 separate cultures from 2 duodenoscopes every 2 months, which undergo standard speciation and sensitivity and are returned to use once negative at 48 hours. The initial results of the Medical University of South Carolina's surveillance cultures are negative for any multidrug-resistant organisms; however, other centers should consider implementing surveillance cultures into their reprocessing practices and closely monitoring for future endoscope infection prevention modalities.</p>","PeriodicalId":504885,"journal":{"name":"Gastroenterology nursing : the official journal of the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates","volume":" ","pages":"E214-E216"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2020-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"38492935","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this prospective nonrandomized study was to assess the performance of nurses in simulated sigmoidoscopy training and the potential impact on their performance of endoscopy unit experience, general professional experience, and skills in manual activities requiring coordinated maneuvers. Forty-four subjects were included: 12 nurses with (Group A) and 14 nurses without endoscopy unit experience (Group B) as well as 18 senior nursing students (Group C). All received simulator training in sigmoidoscopy. Participants were evaluated with respect to predetermined validated metrics. Skills in manual activities requiring coordinated maneuvers were analyzed to draw possible correlations with their performance. The total population required a median number of 5 attempts to achieve all predetermined goals. Groups A and C outperformed Group B regarding the number of attempts needed to achieve the predetermined percentage of visualized mucosa (p = .017, p = .027, respectively). Furthermore, Group A outperformed Group B regarding the predetermined duration of procedure (p = .046). A tendency was observed for fewer attempts needed to achieve the overall successful endoscopy in both Groups A and C compared with Group B. Increased score on playing stringed instruments was associated with decreased total time of procedure (rs = -.34, p = .03) and with decreased number of total attempts for successful endoscopy (rs = -.31, p = .046). This study suggests that training nurses and nursing students in simulated sigmoidoscopy is feasible by means of a proper training program. Experience in endoscopy unit and skills in manual activities have a positive impact on the training process.</p>","PeriodicalId":504885,"journal":{"name":"Gastroenterology nursing : the official journal of the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates","volume":" ","pages":"411-421"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2020-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"38492933","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the increase in new technologies, endoscopy clinical staff require ongoing education to develop safe, competent practice for new equipment and supplies. Maintaining competencies with new equipment and supplies can be challenging. This article illustrates the development and implementation of a continuous educational program for endoscopy clinical staff at a major academic medical center. An initial needs assessment of staff education and competency led to the multidisciplinary plan for continuous education. Development of the Nurse Product Procedure Group enabled endoscopy staff to standardize care and maintain competency in advanced therapeutic procedures. The Nurse Product Procedure Group offers various pathways of learning to meet clinical staff's individual learning needs. Over a 5-year span of implementation, staff satisfaction of education and resources improved. Key implementation elements of the Nurse Product Procedure Group include monthly staff education, resource development, multidisciplinary collaboration, cost savings, outreach education, and external collaboration with national and international gastroenterology professional organizations and societies.</p>","PeriodicalId":504885,"journal":{"name":"Gastroenterology nursing : the official journal of the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates","volume":" ","pages":"E217-E224"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2020-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"38492936","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
