Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a disorder with multiple motor manifestations including resting tremor, bradykinesia, akinesia, rigidity, and postural instability due to loss of dopaminergic neurons in substantia nigra ( Zaltieri et al., 2015 ). The prevalence of PD is estimated to be about 1% ( Ryan, Hoek, Fon, & Wade-Martins, 2015 ). Ten percent of all Parkinson’s cases are hereditary and lead to early onset of the disease ( Spatola & Wider, 2014 ). Many investigators believe that PD arises from the interaction between genetic and environmental factors ( Pringsheim, Jette, Frolkis, & Steeves, 2014 ). Thus, it can lead to different molecular mechanisms related to the neurodegenerative process, probably by inducing mitochondrial impairment from deposition of α -synuclein ( Zaltieri et al., 2015 ). Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is a chronic and slow progressive liver disease suspected to be due to an autoimmune cause because of its strong association with specific autoantibodies (antimitochondrial and antigp210 antibodies) ( Corpechot, Chretien, Chazouilleres, & Poupon, 2010 ). This disease can lead to liver cirrhosis ( Newton et al., 2007 ). The most prevalent symptom is fatigue, which is unrelated to the disease severity ( Huet, Deslauriers, Tran, Faucher, & Charbonneau, 2000 ) and can be attributed to a central mechanism ( Newton et al., 2007 ). Primary biliary cirrhosis is more prevalent in females and is believed to have a correlation with other autoimmune illnesses such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematous, and Graves’ disease. Some genetic and environmental factors are assumed to contribute to the development of PBC ( Corpechot et al., 2010 ). Decompensated cirrhosis of the liver is a common and debilitating illness causing disability, readmissions to hospital, and decreased quality of life, and can lead to liver cancer. The advent of the chronic liver disease nurse (CLDN) position in our hospital in 2009 was the first role in Australia dedicated to providing care to patients with cirrhosis. The role incorporates the care of patients with stable compensated disease, case management of patients with complications of decompensated disease, and hepatocellular carcinoma coordination. There is little information about the relationships among these symptoms. Using a secondary data analysis (N = 356), we examined the relationship between abdominal pain and fatigue and whether psychological distress mediates the effect of abdominal pain on fatigue in both across women and within woman with irritable bowel syndrome. Data gathered through a 28-day diary were analyzed with linear regressions. The across-women and within-woman relationships among same-day abdominal pain, fatigue, and psychological distress were examined. Within-woman relationships were also examined for directionality among symptoms (i.e., prior-day abdominal pain predicts next-day fatigue and prior-day fatigue predicts next-day abdominal pain). In across-women and within-woman analyses on the same day, abdominal pain and fatigue were positively correlated. In within-woman analyses, abdominal pain predicted next-day fatigue, but fatigue did not predict next-day pain. In across-women and within-woman analyses, psychological distress partially mediated the effects of abdominal pain on fatigue. Symptom management incorporating strategies to decrease both abdominal pain and psychological distress are likely to reduce fatigue. Nursing interventions, such as self-management skills to reduce abdominal pain and psychological distress, may have the added benefit of reducing fatigue in irritable bowel syndrome.</p>","PeriodicalId":504885,"journal":{"name":"Gastroenterology nursing : the official journal of the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates","volume":" ","pages":"28-39"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1097/SGA.0000000000000383","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"37522467","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The data of 215 patients with liver cirrhosis who visited the ER were collected from January 1 to March 15, 2017, at Yeungnam hospital in Daegu city, South Korea. Measurement scales were designed on the basis of the liver function test and evaluation of anxiety and depression, self-care, and family support. Diseases that cause liver cirrhosis, their associated characteristics, and respective hematologic examination results were reviewed from the hospital's electronic medical records. Among the 215 patients with liver cirrhosis who visited the ER, 47 (21.9%) had previous ER admissions, whereas 168 (78.1%) had none. Fifteen predictive factors that were significantly different between the ER admission and non-ER admission groups were included as variables in logistic regression analysis. This analysis revealed that the 3 significant predictors of ER admission in patients with liver cirrhosis were number of prior complications, serum bilirubin level, and self-care compliance. An increased number of prior complications, increased bilirubin level, and low self-care compliance increased the ER admission rates in patients with liver cirrhosis. Thus, further studies are necessary to measure the effects of nursing intervention strategies based on these findings.</p>","PeriodicalId":504885,"journal":{"name":"Gastroenterology nursing : the official journal of the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates","volume":" ","pages":"65-75"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1097/SGA.0000000000000399","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"37585480","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

All patients received a standard bowel preparation. The SMS was sent in addition to the standard bowel preparation to patients in an SMS group. In the SMS group, patients were informed about the standard bowel preparation practices via SMS 3 days before colonoscopy. \"Patient identification,\" \"bowel preparation quality,\" and \"patient satisfaction\" forms were used for data collection. Chi-square and independent sample t tests were used in data analysis. The average age of the participants was 57.57 ± 12.37 years, and it was determined that most of the participants were male (64.5%) and had colonoscopy experience (55%). The bowel preparation quality was significantly higher in the SMS group than in the no-SMS group (p = .044), and most patients (91%) were \"very satisfied\" with being informed via SMS.
