The exploration of new structures allowing species identification is relevant for fisheries science since it permits to be managed according to their specific characteristics. The urohial is a specific structure of bony fish. The Pisces: Mugilidae is a family with very conserved morphology, so finding a structure useful to discriminate species and/or populations is a pending task. Goals. Thus, the objective is to determine the usefulness of the urohial bone shape on its lateral, dorsal and ventral view in species discrimination: Mugil cephalus and M. curema and in location discrimination, two from the Gulf of Mexico and one for the Mexican Pacific. Methods. Urohial shape was analyzed using the Procrustes method were the relative warps were submitted to discriminant analyzes and MANCOVA in order to detect differences in lateral, dorsal and shape among species and localities (α = 0.05 p <0.05). Results. Cross-validation percentages of classification percentages by species were 86.6, 96.5 and 95.1% for lateral, dorsal and ventral views, respectively where the dorsal view in addition to being the one that showed the highest percentage of classification was less influenced by size. Among locations for M. curema percentage of classification were 65.9, 54.9, and 60.4%, respectively, and for M. cephalus were 66.7, 49.0 and 56.9%, respectively. Size did not influence the uriohial shape, except in the ventral view for M. cephalus. Conclusions. The urohial bone was useful for the discrimination of species, particularly in its dorsal view, while it was less suitable for discriminating between localities.","PeriodicalId":50407,"journal":{"name":"Hidrobiologica","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44040713","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Goals : 1) trying to present the first data on the culture of an important commercial species in Ecuador, 2) replacing the protein source for feeding in order to minimize the global problem of the fish-based meals in aquaculture. Methods : Guayas cichlid juvenile fish were submitted to four feeding treatments: 0%, 4%, 8% and 12% palm cake inclusion for 30 days. Several zootechnnical indexes were calculated and analyzed at the end of the experimental culture, as well as the feed proximal composition. Results : The inclusion up to 8% palm cake did not affect the apparent digestibility of dry matter, crude protein or gross energy. No differences were found in final weight, growth rate, food conversion rate, protein efficiency rate, and protein productive value among 0, 4 and 8% palm meal content treatments. As the percentage of palm kernel meal in the diets was increased, the food conversion rate decreased, increasing palm meal in diets decreased costs. Conclusions: The productive performance was not affected by the palm cake replacement in diets up to 8% with palm meal and deriving in lower feed production costs.","PeriodicalId":50407,"journal":{"name":"Hidrobiologica","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45588411","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Goals: The agricultural activity in the lower part of the Sinaloa Riverdepends on the fresh water of the regional dams and the aquifer. Methods: The use of groundwater represents approximately 15% of the total water used. In the presence of prolonged periods of drought, new wells are drilled without the use of an appropriate guide for farmers on the location of aquifer areas with a greater hydraulic transmissivity with the purpose of exploiting them more rationally. The National Water Commission has registered more than 680 wells on both banks of the Sinaloa River. Results: The information of 205 of these pumping wells for agricultural or domestic use and the specific capacity information was analyzed. Then, 79 out of 205 wells have pumping tests. It is then determined that the objective of this research work was to find the relationship between the specific capacity (Qe) and hydraulic transmissivity (T) data of the study area using the Thiem formula, considering a fixed value of the radius of influence. This hypothetical consideration and the heterogeneities of the aquifer environment add to the T-Qe relationship an additional component, it is determined that it has a normal behavior. Using the Kalman filter it is possible to eliminate or reduce such a component, thus improving the determination of the T-Qe relation of an R-value of 0.95 (without filter) to 0.97 (with filter), for a linear and exponential relationship. Conclusions: The application of a T-Qe estimate allows characterizing the aquifer area, with this procedure a map was obtained on the distribution of T, which will serve as a guide for future exploitations of groundwater in the study area.","PeriodicalId":50407,"journal":{"name":"Hidrobiologica","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49430797","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The sailfish Istiophorus platypterus is an oviparous billfish species (family Isthiophoridae); it is caught by trolling in the sports fishery in Mexico. However, to date, there have been no reproductive biology studies of sailfish in Acapulco Bay, although the reproductive aspects of any species represent essential information for the design of management plans. Goals. Provide information on aspects of the reproductive biology of sailfish in waters off Acapulco, Bay. Methods. During the period 2008–2009, a total of 561 fish were sampled. Macroscopy analysis and quantitative histology was used to describe reproductive characteristics of the sailfish gonads. Results. 55.8% of the analyzed organisms were males, the remaining 44.2% were females, the sex ratio (1.26 M: 1 H) was different from the expected theoretical ratio. The ovaries of 155 females were classified into five ovarian development phases based on histological analysis of the most advanced group of oocytes. Sailfish is a multiple spawn with asynchronous oocyte development. Batch fecundity for 14 females with the presence of hydrated oocytes ranged from 0.330 to 2.092 × 10 oocytes with an average of 1.07 × 106 oocytes. Gonadosomatic index (GSI) indicated that sailfish have a reproductive period with peaks in August and October (mean monthly GSI= 4.3% and 5.4%, respectively). Conclusions. Population sailfish in the Bay of Acapulco is composed mainly of males, with a reproductive maximum in the case of females during the warm months of the year, as well as a relatively high fecundity.","PeriodicalId":50407,"journal":{"name":"Hidrobiologica","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49606637","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
