However, the region from 200 km to 1000 km has been a blind area for traditional ground-based active remote sensing techniques due to the limitation of facilities and the paucity of neutral atmosphere. To fulfill this gap, the University of Science and Technology of China is developing a powerful metastable helium resonance fluorescent lidar incorporating a 2 m aperture telescope, a high-energy 1083 nm pulsed laser, as well as a superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD) with high quantum efficiency and low dark noise. The system is described in detail in this work. To evaluate the performance of the lidar system, numerical simulation is implemented. The results show that metastable helium density measurements can be achieved with a relative error of less than 20% above 370 km in winter and less than 200% in 270–460 km in summer, demonstrating the feasibility of metastable helium lidar.","PeriodicalId":503623,"journal":{"name":"Photonics","volume":" 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141128067","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The combined polarimeter optical spectrum analyzer (POSA) allows the extraction of the state of polarization with high spectral resolution. The POSA is used in this work to study two optical systems. The first is an optical modulator based on a ferrimagnetic sphere resonator. The POSA is employed to explore the underlying magneto–optical mechanism responsible for modulation sideband asymmetry. The second system under study is a cryogenic fiber loop laser, which produces an unequally spaced optical comb. The polarization measurements provide insights into the nonlinear processes responsible for comb creation. Characterizations extracted from the POSA data provide guidelines for the performance optimization of applications based on the systems under study.","PeriodicalId":503623,"journal":{"name":"Photonics","volume":" 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141129753","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As such, the study of signal processing techniques for fiber-optic interferometers in order to extract information about external perturbation is an important area of research. In this work, the method of Fourier analysis was applied to extract information from the output signals of an intermodal fiber interferometer with spectral interrogation. It is shown that the external perturbation can be measured by obtaining the phase spectrum of the spectral transfer function of an intermodal fiber interferometer and determining the phase difference of a certain pair of mode groups. A mathematical model of this approach was developed, taking into account the parameters of the laser and the optical fiber, the number of excited mode groups, and the parameters of external perturbation. The theoretically considered method of Fourier analysis was experimentally verified, and it was proved to provide a linear response to external perturbation in a wide dynamic range.","PeriodicalId":503623,"journal":{"name":"Photonics","volume":" 43","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141130014","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, conventional FP beams are typically considered as spatially fully coherent, rendering them sensitive to disturbances in the propagation path and susceptible to speckle effects. In this work, we propose an alternative approach to synthesize the optical beam with a FP polarization state through the spatial coherence engineering of a partially coherent beam. In this process, the FP polarization state is initially encoded into the spatial coherence structure of the beam source. We demonstrate that during the encoding process, the vector nature of the beam transitions from the FP polarization state to the spatial coherence structure of the source. However, during the propagation of the partially coherent beam, the vectorness reverts to the polarization state, resulting in the re-emergence of the encoded FP polarization in the output plane. We illustrate that the synthesized FP polarization state, achieved through spatial coherence engineering, is highly robust against obstructions in the propagation path. Furthermore, we examine the effect of the spatial coherence area of the beam on the quality of the recovered FP polarization state. The findings of this work can have valuable applications in optical trapping and optical imaging in complex environments.","PeriodicalId":503623,"journal":{"name":"Photonics","volume":" 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140217344","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The unit of the chiral metasurface array consists of two structurally identical L-shaped gold structures with central symmetry. The CPER of the double L-shaped QWIPs is 14 times higher than that of a single L-shaped QWIP. The device operates in three modes within the detection band: the microcavity mode, the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) mode, and the hybrid mode. The double L-shaped chiral structure selects and reflects a small portion of left-handed circularly polarized light (LCP), while the majority enters the device and excites SPP modes with the bottom gold grating layer, leading to an absorption enhancement. In contrast, right-handed circularly polarized light (RCP) is mostly reflected with limited excitation of SPP waves. QWIPs exhibit a peak absorption of 0.8 and a coupling efficiency of 2700% in the active region of the quantum well due to the combined effects of the microcavity and SPP modes, in which the SPP mode plays a dominant role. The proposed device maintains high circular polarization discrimination capability under large incident angles and can be applied in spectral imaging.","PeriodicalId":503623,"journal":{"name":"Photonics","volume":" 56","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140213711","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Linear array-based photoacoustic tomography (LA-PAT) is one of the most popular configurations of cross-sectional PAI due to its simplicity and clinical translatability. However, when using an optical fiber for LA-PAT, the optical beam shape is deformed due to rapid divergence and, therefore, a larger area on the tissue is illuminated (and the illumination across the linear array is non-uniform), leading to the acquisition of PA signals outside the desired cross-section, which generates artifacts and degrades image resolution. A Powell lens is an optical element that converts a circular beam profile to a nearly linear flat-top profile. In this paper, a Powell lens is used to generate a uniform line illumination scheme that is evaluated with Zemax OpticStudio 2023 R1.02. The system is then characterized experimentally, and the performance is compared with a conventional illumination scheme in LA-PAT.","PeriodicalId":503623,"journal":{"name":"Photonics","volume":" 28","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140215940","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The latter two wavelengths are of particular interest for optical communications. Our study focused on discerning how the molecular structure influences the βHRS response, explicitly highlighting the influence of the azomethine group (CH=N). The results revealed that the molecular planarity, affected by this group, plays a crucial role in modulating the optical properties. The highest βHRS value in a solvent medium using the CAM-B3LYP/6-311+G(2d,p) level of theory achieved in this work was around 1400 ×10−30cm4startvolt−1, four orders of magnitude higher than KDP (0.2 ×10−30cm4startvolt−1), which is a reference in SHG experiments at 1064 nm. The highest calculated βHRS value at the same level of theory and solvent at 1310 nm and 1550 nm was 631 × 10−30cm4startvolt−1 and 456 × 10−30cm4startvolt−1, respectively. Ti mesh was pretreated by irradiating with a picosecond pulsed laser technique using an Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm) at two fluencies, 15 J/cm2 and 30 J/cm2. The samples were then subjected to electrochemical anodization to form TiO2 nanotube arrays on the previously laser-treated surface. This study will investigate the possibility of forming TiO2 nanotube arrays on a pre-laser-treated Ti substrate and determine their physicochemical and photocatalytic properties. The samples were characterized by FESEM, XRD, Raman, XPS, and UV-Vis DRS. UV-Vis spectroscopy was used to observe the progress of photocatalytic degradation for all samples, and degradation products were determined using GC-MS. With the synergistic effects of phase junction, oxygen vacancies, and Ti3+, the laser-treated TiO2 with 30 J/cm2 showed a higher photocatalytic degradation rate (85.1%) of the pesticide carbofuran compared to non-laser-treated TiO2 (54.8%), remaining stable during successive degradation cycles, which has promising practical applications.","PeriodicalId":503623,"journal":{"name":"Photonics","volume":" 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140222009","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In such cases, investigations of hyperfine structures can be very helpful in the identification of the involved transitions.
