Businesses may lessen their impact on the environment and boost their bottom lines by recycling leftovers and decreasing waste in addition to minimizing their environmental impact. The study demonstrates that the quantity of trash produced varies depending on the size of the facility and the residual material kinds, and that some leftover material types can be recycled up to 80% of the time. The report also underscores the significance of transparency in comprehending and managing textile waste, and it draws attention to the fact that upcycling design is distinct from traditional design in that it depends on the properties of the waste materials. The project is situated in the Indian region of Jaipur and aims to improve weaving techniques. This paper outlines a strategy for incorporating upcycling into a traditional textile weaving technique. The study focuses on combining conventional weaving methods with cutting-edge design components to produce distinctive and sustainable items from waste materials. The process involves gathering and choosing waste materials, creating new things from scratch, and prototyping them, and assessing their commercial feasibility and cultural relevance. The findings of this study show that upcycling can be incorporated into indigenous textile weaving skills to preserve cultural heritage and encourage ecological practices. The findings emphasize the significance of considering both economic viability and cultural significance when developing upcycling projects, as well as the possibility for such initiatives to help preserve and revive conventional weaving techniques.","PeriodicalId":503455,"journal":{"name":"ShodhKosh: Journal of Visual and Performing Arts","volume":"13 24","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139168497","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In today’s global world, these products have been extensively commercialized to the extent of losing their authenticity. The artisan communities need to be abreast with current market trends in order to create a demand for their products. The empowerment of the craft ecosystem demands sincere efforts on the part of craft practitioners to facilitate product diversification and wider market reach. However, artisanal products need to be put at the forefront of any design intervention without losing the essence of the original craft.Himachal Pradesh is not only rich in biodiversity but also in various crafts like metal, weaving, knitting, and painting. In this paper, an effort has been made to catalog the products of traditional Kullu Handloom weaving with the raw materials used, the process followed, motifs and colour palette etc. Moreover, initiatives taken by Ms. Anshul Malhotra, a well-known craft entrepreneur in Himachal Pradesh for popularizing the traditional woven designs of the Kullu and Kinnaur region in India and abroad have been reported. Design interventions made by combining new colors and exploring different combinations of yarns and weaves by Ms Anshul Malhotra would serve as a guiding source for the design and artisan communities alike.","PeriodicalId":503455,"journal":{"name":"ShodhKosh: Journal of Visual and Performing Arts","volume":"2 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139211863","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Historically, female characters have often been relegated to submissive and domestic roles on screen. However, recent years have witnessed a significant shift in the portrayal of women in cinema, with an increasing number of films depicting female characters in active, occupational, and self-determining roles. This article delves into this transformative narrative trend by focusing on two Manipuri films, Imagi Ningthem (1981) and Ishanou (1990), directed by Aribam Syam Sharma. These films feature resilient female protagonists who challenge and defy the traditional domestic roles assigned to women in cinematic narratives. Using textual analysis, this article explores the nuanced portrayal of these female characters and the agency they exhibit in shaping their destinies. Drawing from the framework of feminist film theory, this study critically examines how these characters navigate societal expectations and patriarchal norms within the context of their narratives. The films serve as compelling narratives that shed light on the evolving representation of female agency in cinema where women character challenges conventional gender roles and offer a fresh perspective on women's identity within the cinematic realm. By interrogating the textual and societal dimensions of these films, this study gives a broader discourse on gender representation in cinema and highlights the importance of female agency in shaping contemporary narratives.","PeriodicalId":503455,"journal":{"name":"ShodhKosh: Journal of Visual and Performing Arts","volume":"11 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139237089","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Indian tradition, design and fabrication were never separated. Artists and artisans were both considered as artists. People who traditionally work with metals are called Karmakar and those who work especially with brass and bell metal are known as Pital Karmakar. An initial literature review and reconnaissance surveys have aided to identify the issues and the prospects of sustainability associated with the brass and bell metal crafts of Birbhum as follows,• Hand beaten brass-work is unique in shape and size, but the purpose of the material has transformed with rapidly with emerging technologies and changing markets• As traditional objects, brass utensils used to be part and parcel of regular life, which attests to the shift in the taste and cultural habits.• Studies suggests that rapidly emerging technologies, open market, and availability of comparatively cheaper materials (such as Aluminum, plastics, etc.) forwards a set of challenges to the traditional craftsmen to ensure sustainability.Based on the studies on the real situation of the metal crafts in Birbhum district, it can be stated that, this sector, which was once the pride of Bengal, has been suffering for long. Therefore, the present paper attempts to identify and assess the issues and opportunities associated with the brass and bell metal crafts of Birbhum district and delves into extensive fieldwork to collect information from the real situation. The methodology includes library study, interaction with craftsmen, collection of information from Govt. establishments like MSME, NGOs working with this segment, statistical interpretation of data etc. Finally, the paper forwards a systematic, in-depth study on the traditional metal crafts in Birbum that actually have enough potential to boost this sector and to uplift the rural economic scenario in the district.","PeriodicalId":503455,"journal":{"name":"ShodhKosh: Journal of Visual and Performing Arts","volume":"35 25","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139252594","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
