Although obesity is the most common cause of PHP, there is little information available about the prevalence and associated factors in obese patients with PHP. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of obesity associated co-morbidities in people with and without PHP. Methods: Obese and overweight patients with or without PHP were sought for this study. The two groups were then compared with regard to weight, hormone, and blood parameters. Diabetes mellitus, chronic obstructive lung disease, asthma, smoking, varix, hemorrhoid, lumbago, constipation, osteoporosis, hormone replacement therapy, goiter, and gastroesophageal reflux. Findings: One hundred forty nine obese and overweight patients agreed to participate [34 with PHP and 115 without PHP]. Statistical analyses demonstrated that the PHP group had a longer duration of obesity than those without PHP. The PHP group had an increased prevalence of chronic obstructive lung disease, [p < 0.01], hemorrhoid [p < 0.01], lumbago [p < 0.01], constipation [p < 0.01], and gastroesophageal reflux [P < 0.05], By contrast, the prevalence of asthma [p < 0.05], and varix [p < 0.01] were decreased in the PHP[+] group. No statistically significant difference in group prevalence was found for diabetes mellitus, coronary heart disease, smoking, osteoporosis, hormone replacement therapy, or goiter. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that the duration of the obesity in obese patient may be important to the development of PHP in obese patients. The longer duration of obesity in the PHP group may also help to explain its association with co-morbidities such as chronic obstructive lung disease, hemorrhoid, lumbago, constipation, and gastroesophageal reflux.","PeriodicalId":50121,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Musculoskeletal Pain","volume":"22 1","pages":"38 - 42"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-02-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3109/10582452.2014.883006","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69499461","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: The study subjects were recruited into a TMD group and a healthy normal control group. The TMD diagnoses were made using the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD. The control group subjects did not meet those TMD criteria. The head tilt was clinically evaluated in all subjects. Data were collected three times at rest, maximal clenching, flexion, and extension of the head, bilaterally. Shapiro–Wilks, Mann–Whitney, Kruskal–Wallis, unpaired t test, ANOVA and Tukey test, and correlation and logistic regression were applied [α = 0.05]. Results: The TMD group consisted of 19 individuals [age 25.4 ± 3.8 years]. The cControl groups consisted of 28 individuals [age 25.9 ± 4.7 years]. The controls showed greater values in activity and thickness for the right SCM than TMD subjects during flexion and relaxation, respectively. The TMD group presented lower thickness for both muscles when the head was tilted to the right, except during extension. During clenching, EMG activity was significantly higher for the TMD group when the head was to the right. The right SCM showed lower activity during flexion in the TMD group. Ultrasonography and EMG were positively correlated for the right SCM during flexion when the head was to the right. For the other positions, the correlations were negative. The TMD group was more likely to present a lower SCM activity during flexion. Conclusions: The SCM thickness and activity are influenced by the presence of TMD during neck and mandibular movements, as well as the side of head tilt.","PeriodicalId":50121,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Musculoskeletal Pain","volume":"22 1","pages":"89 - 98"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-02-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3109/10582452.2014.883008","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69499513","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: Patients diagnosed with primary FMS and domographically matching healthy normal controls [HNCs] were sought to participate in the study. The total antioxidant status, total oxidative status, and CoQ10 levels were measured in blood samples from the patients and the controls. Results: A total of 40 patients with FMS and 30 HNCs were recruited. There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in regard to C-reactive protein, mean erythrocyte sedimentation rate, mean age, and mean body mass index [p > 0.05]. The mean time from symptom onset to diagnosis for the FMS patients was 2.88 years, and the average number of tender points was 14. The serum CoQ10 levels were significantly lower in the FMS patients compared with the HNC group [p = 0.000]. The serum total oxidative status and oxidative stress index levels were higher, and the serum total antioxidant status levels were lower in the FMS patients compared with those of the HNC group [p < 0.05]. The visual analog scale [VAS] pain scores and the VAS fatigue scores were significantly higher in the FMS group than in the HNC group [p = 0.000]. The serum CoQ10 levels were negatively correlated with the mean Modified Fatigue Impact Scale scores [p = 0.02, r = 0.30], VAS pain scores [p = 0.00, r = 0.38], and VAS fatigue scores [p = 0.03, r = 0.28]. The subjects were randomly selected from workers undergoing the mandatory annual health examination between April 2002 and April 2005. Eighty-three occupational physicians participated in the study. All were trained by the investigators to perform a standardized physical examination, and criteria for the diagnosis of knee bursitis were applied. The criteria were pain and/or tenderness in the anterior face of the knee on the day of the examination or hurting at least four days in the preceding week and swelling or pressure induced pain in the pre-infra patellar bursa. The study population comprised 3710 workers, and 58% were men. The mean age was 38.7 10.3 years. Two percent of the workers refused to participate in this study and another five percent thought there was not enough time to complete the questionnaire or the physical examination. In the remaining study population, 21 cases of new bursitis were diagnosed in 15 workers [12 men] and 40% were bilateral. The overall prevalence of unior bilateral cases of knee bursitis was 0.4%. The highest prevalence in men was observed in the young [20–29 years] and middle aged [30–39 years] workers. Knee bursitis was most prevalent in the construction sector and in the food and meat processing industries. Blue-collar workers were more often affected than other occupation categories. Those blue-collar skilled workers such as painters, floor layers, plumbers and builders, were more likely to have knee bursitis. Truck drivers are also higher up on the list, below the skilled crafts blue-collar workers. Overall, the prevalence of unior bilateral cases of knee bursitis was fairly low: 0.6% in men and 0.2% in women.","PeriodicalId":50121,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Musculoskeletal Pain","volume":"21 1","pages":"385 - 388"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3109/10582452.2013.848969","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69499565","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Twenty five women diagnosed with primary FMS and 20 agematched healthy women [control group] were enrolled in the study. Circulating ‘‘neuroendocrinestress’’ biomarkers [corticotropin-releasing hormone, adrenocorticotropic hormone, cortisol, NA, eHsp72, serotonin, and insulin-like growth factor-1] were evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Serum interkeukin [IL]-8 and C-reactive protein concentrations were also determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and inflammatory cytokine release by monocytes [IL-1b, tumor necrosis factor a, IL-6, IL-10, IL-18, monocyte chemotactic protein-1 and RANTES] was evaluated by the Luminex BioPlex system. The phagocytic process of neutrophils [chemotaxis, phagocytosis, and microbicide capacity] was also evaluated. The FMS patients showed high circulating levels of IL-8 and C-reactive protein [in 100% of the FMS group], high circulating levels of cortisol, and increased systemic levels of NA and eHsp72. There is also increased release of inflammatory cytokines [IL-1b, tumor necrosis factor a, IL-6, IL-10, IL-18, and monocyte chemotactic protein-1] by monocytes, and enhanced activation of the functional capacity of neutrophils [chemotactic, phagocytic, and fungicidal activities]. The authors conclude that these findings showed an inflammatory state accompanied by an altered stress response in FMS patients, supporting the notion of an inflammatory/stress feedback dysregulation underlying FMS.","PeriodicalId":50121,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Musculoskeletal Pain","volume":"21 1","pages":"371 - 375"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3109/10582452.2013.855289","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69499838","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study investigated how self-reported treatment outcomes among individuals in a musculoskeletal pain rehabilitation program are related to the prevalence and trends in the dispensing of prescribed medications. Methods: Patients with musculoskeletal pain were recruited as they began a rehabilitation program. Each participant completed a self-administrated questionnaire on pain, health status and socioeconomic factors in the beginning and at the end of the rehabilitation period. Each individual’s baseline data from the rehabilitation sample was linked to the national Norwegian Prescription Database [2004–2010]. Dispensing prescribed medications in the groups of centrally acting analgesics [opioids], anxiolytics and hypnotics were studied. Results: A total of 1562 individuals participated, and there was no loss to follow-up. Controlled medications [Schedule 2] were prescribed in 36.4% [n = 569] of the sample population. Women were overrepresented in the sample. The dispensing of prescribed hypnotics is more frequent than the dispensing of prescribed analgesics and anxiolytics. Old age, low education level and living alone are related to being prescribed hypnotics and anxiolytics, while gender [female] is related to being prescribed analgesics. A reduction in pain intensity over the two observations in time [pre- and post-treatment] is related to the prescription of hypnotics, while a lack of improvement in physical capacity during the rehabilitation program is significantly related to being prescribed analgesics. The improvement in overall health is significantly related to being prescribed anxiolytics. Conclusions: Dispensing of prescribed analgesics, anxiolytics and hypnotics among individuals in rehabilitation with chronic musculoskeletal pain is associated with treatment outcomes and should be taken into account in designing the rehabilitation intervention.","PeriodicalId":50121,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Musculoskeletal Pain","volume":"21 1","pages":"311 - 319"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3109/10582452.2013.848968","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69499555","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Up until now, it remains unknown if this deficit in CK is caused by neck pain–induced concentration deficits or by functional neck disorders itself. The purpose of this study was to investigate if there is a negative influence on the CK by inducing an experimental peripheral pain stimulus. Methods: A prospective diagnostic study including 21 males and 29 females was performed. The subjects were placed in a virtual reality system by using a head mounted display and were asked to follow a moving globe. The deviation between the expected and the documented head position was recorded under static and dynamic conditions. The subjects were investigated in a cross-over design. There was on each of the two days a measurement free from pain and a measurement with a peripheral-induced pain stimulus. Results: There were no significant differences concerning the static and dynamic joint repositioning error on both measurements. Furthermore, the interindividual analysis shows no trend between the measurements with and without the pain stimulus. Conclusions: In summary, it could be found that a peripheral-induced pain stimulus did not affect the CK of the cervical spine.","PeriodicalId":50121,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Musculoskeletal Pain","volume":"21 1","pages":"327 - 333"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3109/10582452.2013.851760","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69499659","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
