Gruzdev, M. Gorky in 1933 paid special attention to how it covered the Samara period of his activity and his relationship with the “Samarsky Vestnik” newspaper, one of the most prominent employees of which was a publicist and writer R.E. Zimmerman. Drawing on the memoirs and testimonies of contemporaries M. Gorky and R.E. Zimmerman — N.A. Samoilova and A.A. Sanin, the authors of the article suggest that the picture painted by M. Gorky was somewhat one-sided and in places contradicted the truth. Further, the reasons that could make M. Gorky too subjective in assessing both “Samarsky Vestnik” as a whole and its employees are considered. Among these reasons were, in particular, the accusations leveled against M. Gorky by the Marxists who collaborated with “Vestnik” that he defended, in their opinion, the positions of the populists “leaving the stage.” The envy of the latter, who worked in a conservative populist organ, to the young, educated, and progressive-minded employees of the rival newspaper, “Samarsky Vestnik”; and also — the education of competitors, who seemed to the more naive and “holding on with a challenge” M. Gorky excessively arrogant and arrogant. Separately, the reason for the special “dislike” of Gorky for Zimmerman, chosen by Gorky, making corrections to his biography, as the main character of the conflict with “undemocratic” leading Marxists: Zimmerman was more suitable than others for the role of an ideological opponent of Gorky, who was looking for his ways.","PeriodicalId":500807,"journal":{"name":"Literaturnyj fakt","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135700681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Becher’s works in the context of Soviet reception of German Expressionism in the 1920s. A.V. Lunacharsky and P.S. Kogan were mainly positive in their assessments of this literary movement of the 1910s, emphasizing its revolutionary intentions, typical for Expressionists’ works and social position (anti-bourgeois activism, closeness to the working class and the Communist Party). On the contrary, critics that stuck to the program of the magazine “Na literaturnom postu” and associated with the Communist Academy tended to reject Expressionism as a decadent phenomenon of bourgeois culture. They decisively separated Becher from this literary movement. The article also dwells on the Expressionist studies conducted by the research team of the State Academy of Artistic Sciences (GAKhN); in 1926 its president P. Kogan presented his research paper “Johannes Becher. (A page from the history of German Expressionism)” which is published for the first time in the addendum.","PeriodicalId":500807,"journal":{"name":"Literaturnyj fakt","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135700682","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The poet himself in 1913 was inclined to trace the lineage of his artistic method to Gogol and namely his novella “Viy.” Topoi and the thesaurus of the poem in many aspects go back to the stories “Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka” and “Mirgorod,” but it also contains references to other Gogol’s texts, up to “Selected Passages from Correspondence with Friends.” Gogol’s Ukraine appears in “Levada” as a desirable land of beauty, abundance and strength. It emerges as a constant through the everyday and often frightening and repulsive picture of the modern decline of the country.","PeriodicalId":500807,"journal":{"name":"Literaturnyj fakt","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135700680","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The article introduces into scientific circulation their letters for 1822–1824, mainly devoted to the materials of the historical St. Petersburg journal “Northern Archive,” the publication of which was undertaken by F.V. Bulgarin. K.F. Kalaidovich, who lived in Moscow, was an experienced employee of the Archive of the Collegium of Foreign Affairs and the chief superintendent of the Commission for the Printing of State Letters and Treaties. He helped the journal with the communication of valuable documents on the history of medieval Rus’ and the Moscow kingdom of the 15th–17th Centuries, having prepared more than 10 publications for the “Northern Archive” in five years. Kalaidovich also acted as an intermediary between Bulgarin and his fellow historians, members of the “circle” of a patron of art, fascinated by national history, Count N.P. Rumyantsev. The publication touches upon the issues of organizing historical research, the controversy around the “History of the Russian State” by N.M. Karamzin, journal policy in Russia in the 1st quarter of the 19th century, and payment for journal publications.","PeriodicalId":500807,"journal":{"name":"Literaturnyj fakt","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135701007","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Bulgarin’s letters to A.F. Voeikov and 8 Voeikov’s letters to Bulgarin have been preserved, and nine of these letters are published by us for the first time. The necessary commentary to the documents published for the first time and to the two republished letters by Voeikov clarifies the dating and nature of the epistolary, some biographical circumstances of the participants in the correspondence, reveals the features of literary life, including those reflected in the literature and journalism of the time under consideration. Nekrasov “Who Lives Happily in Russia.” In post-war Soviet editions, “Prologue” (“In what year — guess...”) was constantly published as part of the first part of the poem. The article argues for the need to print it before the whole poem, since in the last lifetime editions of the poet’s poems “Prologue” was “out of place” as a result of external circumstances. The fact is that the very division into parts in the poem appeared when the 5th part of the edition of 1869–1873. (containing the prologue and the first five chapters) was already typed and the changes had to be made to the finished layout.","PeriodicalId":500807,"journal":{"name":"Literaturnyj fakt","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135701008","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Tolstoy Peter the Great in early 1934, as well as the materials of three discussions with the participation of Moscow and Leningrad critics and historians. The article discusses the main issues raised in the discussions, such as the problem of the genre of the Soviet historical novel, the historical concept and the image of Peter I. Two discussions about the historical novel Peter the Great were proposed by the Moscow journals October and Literary Critic in 1934. The other was held at the critics section in the Union of Soviet Writers in January 1935. Its brief review with selected quotations was published in the Literary Critic journal (1935, no. 2). More complete characteristics and assessments of the novel expressed during the discussion, which was attended by leading Soviet critics O.M. Brik, V.R. Grib, I.L. Grinberg, V.A. Katanyan, S.D. Krzhizhanovsky, M.Yu. Levidov, A. Lezhnev, R.D. Messer, M.I. Serebryansky, V.B. Korolenko and M.A. Protopopov and their controversy over the heritage of N.K. Mikhailovsky. This controversy unfolded at a transitional moment in the history of “Russian Wealth,” when Korolenko became the main face of the magazine and had to establish himself as a leader. The article examines an early attempt to publish a revealing article by Protopopov about Mikhailovsky, proposed to A.S. Suvorin in 1898, in this context. The critic was refused, but later used it in an obituary about Mikhailovsky, in which, with all the objectivity, there was indifference to the memory of the deceased. Korolenko remembered how much Mikhailovsky did for the writer and objected to Protopopov from the point of view of everyday ethics. In his response, Protopopov claimed that he first criticized Mikhailovsky in 1878: this was the first critical article about Mikhailovsky from a friendly camp. He refuted accusations that for a quarter of a century he accumulated resentment against Mikhailovsky. After that, Korolenko did not continue the polemic. The article introduces into scientific circulation previously unpublished diary entries by Protopopov on the margins of his book “Literary Critical Characteristics” (1896), as well as his letter to Suvorin, revealing Protopopov’s identity.","PeriodicalId":500807,"journal":{"name":"Literaturnyj fakt","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135701010","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The author reconstructs his participation in Moscow literary associations “The Green Atelier” (“Zelenaia masterskaia”), “The Literary Mansion” (“Literaturnyi osobniak”), “The Link” (“Zveno”) as well as the historical context of his creative activities. Literary life of those years was largely concentrated in writers’ clubs, and cafes, where numerous events were held with poetry readings, polemical discussions, etc. The essay traces in detail Kumming’s participation in such literary meetings. Kumming’s “dramatic trilogy” The Legendary Life and Worthy Death of Petrushka (1920), which appears as a vivid example of the poetic avant-garde of the post-revolutionary years, is republished in the Appendix.","PeriodicalId":500807,"journal":{"name":"Literaturnyj fakt","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135701012","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
