The role of dogma in the life of Chirstians cannot be restrained to simply mental assertions of revealed truths but must permeate every aspect of the existence that we as believers, being a society of redeemed humans that showcase the restoration of all things in Christ, live on Earth until the coming age. In this study we will review important aspects of the therapeutic outlook on dogmas that the Orthodox Church in particular and Eastern Christianity in general has had since the beginning, discovering that what is commonly defined as “Orthodoxy” is nothing else than the right mode of existence which God, as our Creator, has intended for us since the Garden of Eden","PeriodicalId":498722,"journal":{"name":"Revista românească de studii axiologice","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135839175","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The author discusses three types of evidence for such prayers: (a) prayers mentioned in the historical or panegyric writings of Christian authors and those prescribed by the military Byzantine manuals of the emperors Maurice, Leo VI and Nikephoros II Phokas during war campaigns and on the battlefield; (b) prayers in times of fear caused by “barbarian” invasions contained in the ancient Byzantine Euchologia, and (c) a series of model-prayers to be used during enemy destructive raids, composed by prominent ecclesiastical figures of the 14th century (such as Gregory Palamas, Philotheos Kokkinos, Macarius Chrysocephalos, and Symeon of Thessaloniki). The wording of the prayers had, on one hand, a deep penitential character, through which war was understood as a chastisement God allowed to rebuke the sins of Christians, but, on the other hand, framed the war of the Byzantine army as a battle for the Orthodox faith, against the unfaithful and those who do not reckon the one true God. One can find prayers where the dominant idea is the petition for peace and deliverance from the despair of war (an attitude closer to the position of the early Church towards war), but also prayers that contain a more belligerent rhetoric, in which God is asked repeatedly to crush the blasphemous foes and to grant victory to the faithful army. Finally, the paper discusses two rites for the blessing of weapons and of the national/military banner, that are found in the current Romanian Euchologion. These rites are adaptations in a particular manner of the corresponding rites included in the Trebnik of Peter Mohyla. There are however some theological contestations of the use of such rites in the liturgical a","PeriodicalId":498722,"journal":{"name":"Revista românească de studii axiologice","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135839174","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this synthesis, Saint Basil, on the basis of his own living of the Jesus prayer, highlights the sanctifying work of this prayer for all believer, be they a monastic or a lay person, this teaching being valid all the way throughout the centuries to this day. He recalls the so-called ‘psycho-somatic methods’ and ‘techniques’ and shows his preference for the hesychastic tradition of Mount Sinai, expressing reserve regarding the hesychastic tradition of Mount Athos, the latter tradition being focused on the respective methods. Saint Basil distinguishes between two stages in the practice of the Jesus prayer: 1) ‘the practical stage’, of which each Christian is responsible, which corresponds to the ‘active’ or ‘working Jesus prayer’; 2) ‘the contemplative stage’, reserved to the perfect ones, which is a gift from God and corresponds to the ‘contemplative’ or ‘seeing Jesus prayer’. But of this contemplative prayer are made worthy also those who cultivate the first stage of the Jesus prayer, sometimes before the moment of their passage into the life beyond the grave, and sometimes after this moment as a reward and mercy from God. Actually, the teachings of Saint Basil of Poiana Mărului concern mainly the first stage of the spiritual perfection, namely the fight against the sinful passions and the cleansing from them, because most believers are at this stage.","PeriodicalId":498722,"journal":{"name":"Revista românească de studii axiologice","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135838871","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such an approach could by no means be separated from the military slant, given that it is on the battlefield that the soldiers feel the proximity of death and therefore have the deepest and most dramatic thoughts about their past, present and even future life. This is the very reason why the clergy’s presence amid the soldiers has always been a necessity, not only with a view to a victory but also in the eventuality of a defeat. Thus, the priests’ spiritual guidance has not been restricted to the mere uttering of the consecrated prayers or blessings. Above all, the assistance provided by the church stood out through the personal example of heroism, not once chaplains leaving their bodies on the battlefield just next to those of the brave soldiers whom they previously encouraged. In the following lines I aim to outline the main features of the history of chaplains and their military activity, focusing especially on those elements occurring prior to the World War I.","PeriodicalId":498722,"journal":{"name":"Revista românească de studii axiologice","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135838873","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The balance of the coexistence of opposites in the same space and time could not be the result of chance or hazard, but could only be given by a cause producing and sustaining this balance, that is, by the Creator. Saint Gregory of Nyssa, in the addition of the coexistence of opposites, also notes that the fundamental elements, i.e. fire, air, water, earth, are equipped not only with specific properties, but also wirh properties of interconnectedness to the other elements, being eo ipso connecting elements between opposites or extremes, like heaven and earth. In the logic of this patristic argument it is an obvious similarity with that ”anthropic principle” asserted in the philosophy of science. In cappadocian thought, all elements of nature, whether fundamental, inanimate or living, are, in their very properties, endowed with the most suitable dosage and measure for interconnectedness and to form an orderly and balanced cosmos.","PeriodicalId":498722,"journal":{"name":"Revista românească de studii axiologice","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135838874","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present article tells about the most important representatives of the reform in the Romanian countries, with an introduction of the church music schools that existed until the reform.
