Abstract

The Cappadocian Fathers meet the method of modern science when they base their arguments on logical reasoning and empirical observation, as is the case with observations regarding the struggle of opposites in the world. The balance of the coexistence of opposites in the same space and time could not be the result of chance or hazard, but could only be given by a cause producing and sustaining this balance, that is, by the Creator. Saint Gregory of Nyssa, in the addition of the coexistence of opposites, also notes that the fundamental elements, i.e. fire, air, water, earth, are equipped not only with specific properties, but also wirh properties of interconnectedness to the other elements, being eo ipso connecting elements between opposites or extremes, like heaven and earth. In the logic of this patristic argument it is an obvious similarity with that ”anthropic principle” asserted in the philosophy of science. In cappadocian thought, all elements of nature, whether fundamental, inanimate or living, are, in their very properties, endowed with the most suitable dosage and measure for interconnectedness and to form an orderly and balanced cosmos.
