The goal of this review paper is to give a thorough summary of the clinical presentation, diagnostic criteria, aetiology, epidemiology, and treatment options for PCOS. Between 5% and 20% of women in reproductive age worldwide are estimated to have PCOS. This syndrome is widely known for being complicated, involving both environmental factors and genetic predisposition. Common clinical symptoms include irregular menstruation, hyperandrogenism, and an ultrasound that reveals polycystic ovarian morphology. Although there are other sets of diagnostic criteria, including the National Institutes of Health standards and the Rotterdam criteria, a precise diagnosis is still necessary. Those with PCOS are more likely to develop metabolic problems such as obesity, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance. An elevated risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and infertility are among the long-term health consequences. The primary objectives of therapeutic interventions, which are tailored to the patient's presentation and goals and involve both lifestyle modifications and pharmacological therapies, are improvements in hormonal imbalances, metabolic abnormalities, and reproductive outcomes. This study compiles the most recent findings and clinical observations to improve healthcare professionals' comprehension of PCOS.","PeriodicalId":498237,"journal":{"name":"Saudi journal of nursing and health care","volume":"53 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139801895","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: A cross-sectional design assessed patients known to the PCS in a tertiary care center in Saudi Arabic from May 2023 to September 2023. FCs perceptions of patient’s symptom burden and satisfaction with PCS were studied through the Family Satisfaction with End-of-Life Care Scale (FAMCARE-2) and Arabic Questionnaire for Symptom Assessment (AQSA). Results: A convenience sample of 264 FCs agreed to participate (response rate = 94%). Approximately half of the participants were male (n=146; 55.7%). Participants were mostly aged between 30 to 50 years (n =148; 56%). Approximately half were receiving disease-modifying treatments. 101 (38.3%) had a Do-Not-Attempt-Resuscitation (DNAR) order. There was high satisfaction with how the services respected the dignity FCs (M = 4.6; SD=0.6). FCs were less satisfied with ‘the practical assistance provided by the PCS’ (M = 4.1; SD = 0.9). Satisfaction was higher in the outpatient setting (M = 4.3, SD = 0.7). The most severe symptom reported by FCs was ‘tiredness’, followed by ‘pain’. The mildest ones were ‘shortness of breath’, followed by ‘nausea/vomiting’. Conclusion: Overall, FCs have reported a positive experience with inpatient and outpatient PCS. FCs' greater satisfaction was observed in the outpatient setting with the possible rationale that inpatients are often more unstable and symptomatic.","PeriodicalId":498237,"journal":{"name":"Saudi journal of nursing and health care","volume":"374 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140479858","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
