{"title":"The Significance of Nepal’s Geopolitical Location; Reality Checking","authors":"Sandip Adhikari","doi":"10.3126/unityj.v5i1.63192","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3126/unityj.v5i1.63192","url":null,"abstract":"This research paper investigates Nepal's geostrategic importance by analyzing its role as a significant nexus in South Asia. In ancient times, Nepal occupied a crucial geostrategic position as it served as a pivotal crossroads connecting South Asia, Tibet, and China, facilitating the exchange of commodities, ideas, and culture. The central argument posits that Nepal's geographic location endows it with substantial strategic significance, both politically and economically, enabling it to influence regional dynamics. Employing a mixed methodology, the research delves into various facets of Nepal's geostrategic relevance through historical assessments, geopolitical analyses, and case studies of hydro-politic potentiality. The approach commences by examining Nepal's historical role as a buffer state amid regional powers, leading to a longstanding history of diplomatic struggles to safeguard its sovereignty. Furthermore, the paper explores how Nepal's geographical position shapes its security dynamics, particularly in the context of the escalating China-India rivalry in contemporary times, employing geopolitical frameworks to illuminate this aspect. To shed light on Nepal's involvement in facilitating global trade and connectivity, the methodology also includes case studies of infrastructure initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative and regional connectivity projects. In conclusion, the paper asserts that Nepal's geostrategic significance is a product of its historical development and proactive international relations, closely intertwined with its geographic positioning. It underscores Nepal's potential to serve as a conduit for regional cooperation and economic integration while emphasizing the need for astute navigation to preserve its independence in a challenging geopolitical landscape.","PeriodicalId":498142,"journal":{"name":"Unity journal","volume":" June","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140383368","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The engagement of Gorkhali in the Private Military and Security Companies (PMSCs) is not a new phenomenon; it has been seen since the end of the Cold when it came into existence. As the market of PMSCs rises exponentially, security labourers from countries like Nepal are increasingly joining the same. Gorkhali’s long history of mercenaries and constructed narrative of bravery and loyalty has also attracted PMSCs. Existing literature overlooks the emerging consequence and contradiction of PMSCs-led global security governance to Gorkhali and the complex inter-relationship among PMSCs, client state, Gorkhali, and Nepal. This paper uses the ‘Global Assemblages’ approach to capture multiple actors’ fluid relationships, changes, emerging practices, authority, and institutions. The research looks at consequences and contradictions related to Gorkhali after the 2016 Taliban attack on Nepali security guards and the situation of the same after Afghanistan fell to the Taliban in 2021 while serving for PMSCs. It uses the ‘discourse analysis’ to incorporate books, journal articles, and media interviews of security guards and their families on the research topic. Lastly, research argues that the blurred relation between PMSCs and client states in global security assemblages is not only in the security and military realm but is also seen in the case of taking responsibility for any tragic event/accident of Gorkhali in PMSCs-led global security governance. It is also influencing the local institutions and practices of Nepal.","PeriodicalId":498142,"journal":{"name":"Unity journal","volume":" 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140382577","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The sustainable development of Nepal is affected by a lack of a proper legal and policy framework for balancing infrastructure development and heritage conservation. This research delves into the analysis of the existing laws and policies of Nepal, which have been legislated to create anequilibrium amidst the two. The research further investigates the gap in the legislation and practice in Nepal. Nepal has several national laws and ratified conventions like the Ancient Monuments Preservation Act in 2013, and the Convention Concerning the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage, 1972, etc. which have not been well-implemented. Most of Nepal's legal and policy frameworks for heritage conservation are adaptations of international frameworks, which might not be appropriate in the context of the country. The thesis statement stresses that comprehensive, proportionate, and flexible legal and policy frameworks and their implementation can help achieve a delicate balance between infrastructure development and heritage preservation. Moreover, the research highlights the need for a multidimensional approach that considers the socio-cultural, economic, and environmental aspects of infrastructure projects while safeguarding Nepal's cultural heritage, emphasizing the need for ongoing refinement. The study uses doctrinal methods for data collection and analytical and descriptive approaches to data analysis. The findings of the study provide insights into the current situation and suggest recommendations for better balancing of infrastructure development and heritage conservation in Nepal.","PeriodicalId":498142,"journal":{"name":"Unity journal","volume":" 796","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140382700","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Nepali Army has a long tradition of exercising military diplomacy in order to safeguard sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national security. Different experts and scholars perceive that the military diplomacy of Nepal has been influenced by various domestic and international factors. The objective of this research is to assess various domestic and international factors that influence military diplomacy in Nepal. The research assumes an alternative hypothesis having a relationship with the influencing factors of military diplomacy. The research follows a sequential explanatory design using both primary and secondary data. Primary data are collected by using a stratified sample technique from 68 government officers engaged in administrative, security, and Foreign Service of Nepal with five-point Likert-scales questionnaire. Secondary data are extracted from research articles, books, newspapers, and online sources. The findings show that all the sub-variables of domestic and international factors are highly correlated. The regression analysis shows that domestic and international factors have a 91.5% effect on the military diplomacy of Nepal. The research suggests an improvement of domestic factors and competing with international factors for enhancing the military diplomacy of Nepal.","PeriodicalId":498142,"journal":{"name":"Unity journal","volume":" 757","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140382876","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A comprehensive study on understanding and identifying landslide susceptible areas and planning accordingly is perhaps one approach to disaster preparedness. In this context, landslide susceptibility assessment (LSA), plays a key role as a preparedness and mitigation tool at the local level. Landslide susceptibility, theoretically, denotes a geographic location of potential reoccurrence of landslide in an area based on several causative factors. I have conducted this study to explore landslide occurrence in Nepal based on secondary data, and map landslide susceptibility in Nuwakot district by using spatial multi-criteria analysis, SMCA and frequency ratio (FR) method. Then, I have evaluated the results which will support preliminary landslide risk level identification at the local level. Existing secondary data and landslide inventory extracted using satellite imageries were major data sources. Landslides in Nuwakot are concentrated within the range of 1000-1500-meter elevation of 15-25-degree convex slope with gneisses/schists formation. A result using SCMA methodology shows 47% area of Nuwakot under landslide susceptibility, of which 13.6% is highly susceptible whereas FR method resulted 27% area under high susceptible zone. The variation in susceptibility level and area between SCMA and FR methods can be attributed to differential calculated weight factor to geological factors, such as fault, lineament, and lithology. This study concludes that irrespective of methods adopted, landslide susceptibility maps and output data provide useful tools for landslide hazard risk identification and management. The necessity of robust and commonly applicable guidelines at different geographic scales is also obvious.","PeriodicalId":498142,"journal":{"name":"Unity journal","volume":" 33","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140383737","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of this paper is to highlight various dimensions of the unification efforts of Mana Deva I. The writer has attempted to put forward the evidence and findings of historians and archeologists who have come to the common understanding that Mana Deva I was the first recorded unifier of ancient Nepal. Analytical approach has been used for the research of his life, leadership, and achievements. Studies of the inscriptions, important documents, books, journals, and articles have been made relating to Mana Deva. He provided the first authentic history of Nepal extending from Brahmaputra in the east to Kashmir in the west. When Mana Deva I was only 12 years old, his father Dharma Deva died. Instead of burning herself with her dead husband’s corpse as Sati, Mana Deva’s mother, Rajyawati, assisted her son in his reign. Mana Deva, with the assistance of his mother and maternal uncle, began a military unification effort both in the east and west. The success of the military unification effort provided an opportunity for the king to unify the nation in other aspects as well. Mananka- the coin introduced by the king led to economic unification; Managriha- his royal palace provided a center for administrative unification; and his religious synergetic activities led to cultural unification. The leadership of Mana Deva I greatly impacted and influenced the later Lichhavi kings and hence, Lichhavi's rule is considered the golden period of ancient Nepali history.","PeriodicalId":498142,"journal":{"name":"Unity journal","volume":" 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140384259","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is a lack of academic consensus on whether cultural power equates to soft power despite the growing influence of the media and entertainment industry. Considering popular culture a soft power in cultural diplomacy, this article examines the changing paradigms of content moderation and regional lockout in the global power dynamics through case studies of the Korean wave, American Pop culture, and Japanese Manga and Anime. It uses the Saunders Research Onion method with an interpretive approach to subjectively explore the aspects of cultural influence. Similarly, it analyses the evolution of recurring themes in the case studies. Data collection employs a longitudinal approach to study the impact of technology and changing audience preferences. The primary data sources include expert interviews, supplemented by secondary sources such as relevant literature, reports, and media contents. The findings highlight that cultural diplomacy as a softpower approach effectively contributes to the nation-branding concept that now incorporates new demands, actions, and goals.","PeriodicalId":498142,"journal":{"name":"Unity journal","volume":" 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140384984","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, the study discerns the strategic utilisation of the tech-powered revitalised security industry by certain small states as a means to transcend the confines of defensive nihilism. An identified gap in current scholarship lies in the limited exploration of the transformative dynamics associated with technological innovation-driven security industries within the context of small states. Consequently, this paper endeavours to furnish a comprehensive analysis of the revitalised security industry and its multifaceted implications on the domains of security, politics, and economics. The research employs a nuanced approach, with a primary emphasis on case studies pertaining to Israel and Singapore, both exemplifying small states that have strategically harnessed high-tech capabilities to defy conventional perceptions of their inherent limitations. The central objective is to scrutinise the methodologies adopted by these small states, offering insights into their concerted efforts to bolster technological prowess. This divergent trajectory challenges prevailing realist assumptions regarding the inherent constraints imposed upon small states. Methodologically, the study employs a diverse array of analytical tools, including case study techniques, policy discourse investigation, and cross-case comparative analysis. This eclectic methodological approach aims to discern and unravel the intricate interplay between technology’s transformative influence on the security industry and its subsequent ramifications for small states.","PeriodicalId":498142,"journal":{"name":"Unity journal","volume":" 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140381838","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
